Which microsoft surface products are worth a damn and which are garbage?

Attached: surface.jpg (2400x1800, 276K)

all of them are garbage. no idea why people buy them.

>Which microsoft surface products are worth a damn
all of them

>which are garbage
none of them

Surface book has crap hinges. Any sort of screen jostling will result in the keyboard GPU disconnecting. If it was in use at the time, you get a blue screen shutdown.

just buy a Dell XPS

the first SB is shit, they fixed that stuff with 2.

The devices need some aging, same how the surface was trash before the surface pro 3.

Buy the latest surface pro. Anything else is either overpriced or not necessary at all.

I never got used to the surface pro, the surface book 2 is nice though

Surface Pro 6 (latest) 128GB is the only one of value, I think. However, Surface Go is fine if you don't mind something very underpowered but good enough for things outside of medium/heavy use like modern heavy gaming or 30+ layers photoshop with a 40000*40000 canvas at 600 DPI because you're retarded
Surface Book seems awkward to use as a tablet, quite heavy with the keyboard and without the keyboard you get about 3-4 hours of battery life of "average" use (web browsing the 'chon, etc)

Surface Laptop is just incredibly stupid idea put out to make a quick buck.

The SP 1-5 are generally filled with battery or heating issues. SP6 i5 has no fan and for whatever reason, gives me better performance than other laptops I've tried like the Thinkpad X1 or the Yoga.
Problems: the Surface Pen is not as good as a Samsung stylus. It's certainly great for notes. Fairly good for digital art but overall not as good as a proper digital tablet like a wacom.
You can of course still do digital art, just be prepared ot adjust settings a bit more.

Battery life seems good for me - about 7 hours on the 'chon with reasonably heavy tweaking.

Also for whatever reason, don't use the official surface iso, reinstall it with Windows LTSB and just download the drivers as needed. Latest version of Windows is fucking the keyboard touchpad up and the pen up too on multiple users.

They are all cool tbqh. But since these are Windows devices so you can just go buy cheaper alternatives

They're made by the company that makes Windows. They're probably the best Windows devices. If you're gonna rely on Microsoft for your software, why not go all in?

They're fucking trash, even the god damn SSD is soldered in.

Wrong. Kek

>Surface Book seems awkward to use as a tablet, quite heavy with the keyboard and without the keyboard you get about 3-4 hours of battery life of "average" use (web browsing the 'chon, etc)

It's fine for watching a movie on the couch, but the battery life being so short definitely limits it.

I reattach the screen facing away from me, fold it down and then take notes that way for a day in uni. It fills a very specific niche for when you want a tablet/labtop hybrid to take notes with in uni, but also powerful enough to play games on.

The detached screen weights a little less and is thinner than a surface pro so I found it a bit more comfortabe to hold atleast.

>Surface Laptop is just incredibly stupid idea put out to make a quick buck.

Never really paid any attention to these, what's wrong with it?

I would love a SB but I'd have to have the back with it which would kill it for me as a tablet since I like to hold mine.

As for the laptop - the idea of it is bad. Basically, you can't fold it even 180 but it's a touchscreen. Which is fine. The problem is that they makerted it with the pen. Not just touch. They had videos of how amazing note taking is on it. That's the problem is they realized that as laptop, the pro isn't that good for people with no table/stable surface. So they created the surface laptop which is terrible as a tablet because it doesn't exist. It took away a main selling point of the pro and limited the rest so much just to say "here's your stable stand, give me money"

>t. Apple user

Drawfag here, I like them. I really like the regular Surface, it's a nice drawing tablet that runs professional software with pretty much zero competition, except maybe Wacoms Windows tablets but those are really overpriced trash with no real reason to exist (too big for travel, too underpowered to do everything)
I don't really know any good use for it besides drawing/graphic design or CAD, seems like a pretty stupid product for everything besides that.
Pic related dock by Kensington makes it really attractive tho, really love the looks of that.
Ohh btw, the desktop surface is a stupid overpriced piece of trash and Microsoft is irresponsibly retarded for not selling just the display, at least optionally. At this price no professional buys them over a beefy desktop + Wacom Cintiq for the same money.

tl;dr: If you don't draw get a proper laptop instead.

Jesus fucking Christ

Surface go is the epitome of tablet/laptop.
The only issue is, can't run GNU/Linux and now GNU/Linux support.

The hardware is nice, the problem is Windows 10 is such a laggy piece of shit, it's almost impossible to use without a decent GPU.

I'm considering getting a 10" tablet.
Should I get the surface go?

The original surface 1 and 2 are trash and only started being decent from surface pro 3 onward.

Surface book 1 has a ton of issues with the hinge which are mostly fixed with the sb2.

Surface book 2 15 inch model drains battery even when plugged in during heavy GPU use, 13.5 inch model is unaffected.
Pretty hit and miss.Surface pro 3-6 and the surface book 2 are good devices if you have the money and are looking specifically for a tablet/labtop hybrid.
Otherwise there are less expensive alternatives.

What exactly do you want your tablet for?

Web browsing, Document typing, Reading PDFs/Manga, Watching Anime/movies.

I got a Surface Pro 6 like a month ago, the 128GB i5 model. Generally speaking it's a very nice device and I'm very pleased with it. This one seems to be pretty decent value, the screen looks absolutely great and the specs are good enough for pretty much everything I'd ever need to do, 8GB RAM with a 4C/8T CPU are more than enough. The older models which were pretty much the same price but were 4GB with a 2C CPU feel like a way worse purchase. The keyboard and touchpad are surprisingly nice too. I expected the slim keyboard to be complete crap but it actually feels quite nice and has a decent level of tactile feedback without feeling very mushy.

The screen is probably the most impressive thing. It looks absolutely gorgeous, I don't understand why actual monitors don't really get this quality of IPS panel. It's no OLED, but the black level is visibly better than other $700-1000 monitors I own or have seen, which in turn also delivers a visible boost to contrast. There is also no IPS glow that I can see even from weird angles. There's a bit of backlight bleed sadly, but overall the screen is way better than any IPS monitor I've ever seen. Why the fuck aren't IPS monitors this good?

how is the jittering?

Surface Pro 6 i7/16/1TB Platinum
1,950$

Or black with same specs but black and 512 gb ssd for 1,614$?

Both new

What would you put on the surface pro that would require a full 1TB SSD tho?

Iunno. porn?

Over $1500 for 512GB on a disposable tablet. Really? This thing will be obsolete in 3 years at best, regardless of how much SSD storage it has. I wouldn't get one with more than 256GB, it's already expensive. Plug in a USB hard drive if you need more.

The next step down is only 8 gig ram, and I want 16 gig. And disposable? I doubt it. It'll be a very usable device for many years

I7/8/256 for 1270 is the next option

What sort of documents?
If you don't need full office or libre office/open office, why not an adroid one?

It's very odd to me in the SP6 how it has better performance for games than most other laptops, despite being fanless

Get the i5.
You want 16GB RAM, why?
And the SPs are not built to last, dude.
They're built to be tossed out unless you luck out. There is a reason M$ just want you to pay for a new one instead of trying to repair it.

It's fairly common to be told "just pay $300 for the next gen" instead of being told they'll repair it.

What would you do with those 16 gigs of ram? You aren't going to be using the surface pro for gaming or video editing right?

Surface book has been good for me (I use it for drawing, photo editing, 3D modeling/rendering, and publication design), but it's definitely overpriced. You can get a more powerful Zbook x2 for less money and a way more functional design (at least for the kind of work I do). If I had known about it before I got the surface book It would have been my first choice.

No problems that couldn't be fixed with a driver update on my surface book so far though.

>What sort of documents?
Presentations and typing.
>why not an android one?
I'm open to the idea, but I need an android device that can be connected to a printer.
Also I like to open multiple instances of mpv while typing.
Android doesn't support PIP in all apps.

What generation SB? 1, performance base 1 (has nvidia GPU) or SB2?

Also how do you find the cooling when using it with the base attached and folded over?

Are the fans loud when you're drawing (also what programs do you use)

>i doubt it
ok let me know how your battery replacement goes in 2020

Attached: disposable.jpg (1239x1467, 551K)

If it's running Windows, it's garbage.

Not sure what MPV is.
I think the Samsung Tab S4 would - I'm pretty sure my Note 9 (phone) does support PiP in almost everything I've tried.

You really don't need the i7 - it's a gimmick. It's maybe 10% faster at benchmarks and you'll get maybe 3-5 frames more in a game. The i5 is fanless and is perfectly fine for your needs I Think.

My boss bought a Surface for his daughter, he thought it would be the same like buying her a real Macbook + iPad combo.

Turned out to be a complete and total failure, it was slow as fuck from day one and as I was setting it up for her I noticed support for the touch screen keyboard was spotty at best, I tried to Google something and pressing on the Google search bar wasn't bringing up the keyboard at all for example.

A year later the Surface just stopped working, it wouldn't boot. The boss gave it to me to try and fix it, so I called Microsoft here in my country and they had no idea what I was talking about, they only had support for Office 365, Windows, Azure etc. They told me to call a USA number, I did call them and asked them to just tell me where in my country can I find an authorized repair shop that knows about Surfaces so I can take it there. They told me the warranty had expired so I would have to pay to continue talking with them. I hang up.

I googled a bit and ended up pressing a combination of the power button and some volume keys for 30 seconds which entered some sort of boot menu which brought it back to life for 2 days until it died again. Haven't managed to resurrect it ever since.
We took it to a regular PC repair shop and they had never seen one before, couldn't help.

Basically trash.

I have a maxed out SB2. Cooling has been surprisingly good and the fans are usually pretty quiet unless I'm doing something more intensive. The only time it gets uncomfortably hot is when I'm rendering in Keyshot (keyshot only uses the CPU to render so that's why) or gaming for a while. The base has never really gotten hot. It's gotten slightly warm when using Solidworks or gaming for an extended period, but cooling is not a problem at all there. As for cooling in the folded over mode, it hasn't been a issue for me, but I don't use usually use GPU intensive programs in that mode, only drawing programs and some photoshop.

The hardware is good from my experience, but the whole transition between modes is really poorly thought out and would have been a deal breaker to me if I had foreseen the issue. For example, when I'm working in photoshop and want to switch in to draw mode for a moment to work with the pen I can't because photoshop uses the GPU and you can't disconnect the screen when the GPU is in use. It's also a very cumbersome transition process compared to convertibles like the old VAIO flips and the xps 12.

>It's very odd to me in the SP6 how it has better performance for games than most other laptops, despite being fanless
The cooling system seems to be pretty good, especially for a passive one. The thing can get pretty fucking hot, though. I've had mine at like 80% load for maybe 10-15 minutes while plugged in and set to maximum performance, the CPU only hit like 70C but the back of the thing was seriously hot, I measured like 49C with an IR thermometer at one point. This suggests several things to me
>cooling system is well designed as the CPU doesn't hit 100C while maintaining decent clocks
>a lot of heat is transferred to the back, which means the cooler is doing its job but this shit would not be nice to hold under such load
>the lack of a fan pushes overall device temperature very high, which is bad for Li-ion batteries, so even if the CPU doesn't go nuclear it's probably best to avoid high load if you care about battery longevity (and you should care, seeing how it's not replaceable)

>Not sure what MPV is.
Please be b8

You're confusing two window mode with picture in picture mode

If you want multiple windows open at the same time I'd say you should just buy something which can run a proper desktop OS, not Android.

I've got a surface pro 4, a macbook pro, and an Alienware 17 for VR. I also have 3 desktop computers for at home but that whatever.

I mostly use my desktop, my alienware for going to friends places, macbook for iOS dev, and surface pro for light gaming and browsing.

I love my Surface Pro 3 but in the end it isn't amazing or anything. Nice to have, I don't regret buying it, but probably a regular laptop is more than enough for most people.

Thank you. I'll look into it if CES isn't showing anything new.
I do know it will be annoying but if the fans aren't loud, I could leave it in perma tablet mode I think.

I think it's down to it being spread out throughout the chasis - comparing it to other surface pros, it's hot all over as opposed to just where the fan normally is

No, I'm not. splitscreen is not the same as pop-up view. Pop-up view lets me move a small window of the app anywhere

I upgraded from a SP5 to the iPad, it's not even a contest the Apple Pencil absolutely destroys it.
I use Clip Studio so it works for me™

I got myself a Surface Go last week. Can't beat 10" and the keyboard is pretty good. Worth the money for me.

I see people at uni taking much clearer note with the apple pencil all the time.

Maybe my handwriting is just shit

software is a huge aspect too. some programs just can't manage to produce straight, soft lines. I use Bamboo Paper by Wacom on my Surface and it really feels like heaven.

>the keyboard GPU
Christ, what a world.

Any good/interesting accessories for Surface Book?
What's the best/cheapest pen?

if you specifically need windows tablet then yes its good, because all windows tablets are trash except the surface lineup. But in general if i would need a tablet i would use android over windows, atleast thats what i feel after using android and windows tablets.

So basically you buy surface shit if you need:
Windows tablet
You are an digital artist (painting, drawing, designing, etc)

If just need general laptop just buy from normal brand like dell

Certainly not the surface docking station, as that thing is outdated and doesn‘t supply enough power to recharge the surface during high performance tasks. ( even the power cable that comes with the 15 inch version doesn‘t lol )

If you want a docking station get one for
the USB-C port

I use the lastest surface pen and I‘m fine with it. I tried a budget one before but that one kinda sucked

The current state of Jow Forums. Just like any laptop use the fucking Surface recovery image or just use the normal Windows ISO. Even reddit managed to run loonix on Surfaces for years and you failed to reinstall fucking Windows?

>worth a damn
Surface Book
Surface Studio

>which are garbage
Surface Laptop
Surface Pro

Attached: 1516877790102.gif (500x421, 1.89M)

The surface pro is probably the worst tablet you can get if you're an artist. N-trig is by far the worst in terms of jitter and trigger sensitivity (minimum pressure to activate the digitizer) and the Surface Pro 2018 has one of the worst cases of jitter I've seen even for an n-trig digitizer, though maybe it's just the surface pen is garbage because I personally use N-trig with the wacom bamboo ink and it's good enough.

Artists on a budget should look at chink tablets or an iPad Pro. If they can afford a little more then they should shell out for a business machine like elitebook, Thinkpad, etc. or an XPS or Yoga 900 2-in-1 because those typically use Wacom AES, which is at least on par with the Apple pencil. Palm rejection might go to the iPad though. If you're rich enough to afford it I would just get a MSP or cintiq and use it with a desktop. The perfect palm rejection, trigger sensitivity, lines, etc. of EMR can't be beat. I've also heard some good things about the new chinese cintiq competitors for like 1/10th the price.

>artist
>complains about minute bs
So this is why artists are a bother to work with. No wonder you guys are all poor.

You know how I know you're a Microsoft pajeet shill?

>Which microsoft surface products are worth a damn
None.

shit he's right, there's literally no way to use a device that needs to be plugged in or any purpose for one

Attached: D5B0C1AB-3597-4A85-9C68-A38AC171CEE3-19512-0000232FB4332335.gif (430x408, 908K)

The surface is a high powered rich persons device, where a 2-3 year old device just isn't good enough for their needs. So it's kinda weird that people are concerned about longetivity of these devices, since it's not really intended for poor people.

God I wish Phillips screws would die out.

>I personally use N-trig with the wacom bamboo ink and it's good enough
Kek. In Teoh Yi Chie's test. Bamboo jitter the most even worse than $30-$50 Chinese pens and the Surface Pen show no jitter at all

Is that Seoul in the background?

All garbage for separate reasons.
>Surface Studio
100% unnecessary. Outdated non-upgradable internals.
>Surface Pro
Best of the bunch, but still...just buy a normal laptop. The 2-in-1 form just doesn't work. No idea why people force it so hard.
>Surface Go
Once you install full Windows instead of just RT, you'll see why it's garbage.
>Surface Book
I have trouble understanding what the point of this thing even is. It's big, it's bulky, and the odds that anyone will ever pop off the screen for tablet use are exactly 0%.

Long story short, if you want an Apple product, just buy an Apple product. You don't get the luxury of feeling superior while using a Surface product.

not ever happened once on mine.

the first one was shit, but the second one has a quad core and is a good business machine

What's the Linux situation? Been pondering getting a Surface Go.

How easy is it to get back to Windows if Linux isn't working on it to my liking?

Fpbp

There's nothing about the Surface range that causes windows to be magically better

Surface Book and Surface Studio are good, but overpriced as fuck and none of the products are actually worth buying.

I want to get comfy in bed, while fapping.
A laptop isn't comfy as much as I'd like, but a tablet lacks the proper OS of the laptop.
What to do?

Neat.
I don't need the cameras.
Why isn't this more popular on Jow Forums?

I miss the oldfags.

My laptop is going to sputter and die. I'm thinking of getting a Surface Pro 6. How is it engineering work? I need to run MATLAB/Xilinx ISE/OrCAD. I also use Photoshop sometimes so this should suffice. I'm concerned that the space provided will not be sufficient and the screen will be too small

Yes

I had a Surface 3 which was decent. The design is just awkward though, you can't use it on your lap with the kickstand.

get cheap android chink tablet for 100$, if its not enough the dosh out for surface device

I'd if mpv could be used in android with extension, can buffer At least 200MB of video.

I use Surface 3 exclusively as a tablet and i love the kick stand. On my lap when in bed, on the fridge in the kitchen, on the floor or towel rack in bathroom.

Surface book is the best device I've ever owned

this

Absolutely everything

that particular one is too heavy

They all look pretty cool

Well, it's the only tablet with GNU/Linux experience.

2nd-ed

I like the book

Real fucking talk.

Does anyone here even OWN a Surface product or are you all just reposting the same stale af memes again and again?

the original surface pro has legit wacom. I didn't find it that impressive though.

Is it pressure sensitive too? If not, then into the trash it goes.

Surface is the only tablet worth a shit for programming seeing as the garbage fucking Ipad runs on iOS instead of OSX so it has literally 0 programming software

Attached: 1984182725121.jpg (333x371, 18K)

I own a Surface pro 5. I use it everyday for casual browsing, videos, and for studying (reading textbook, taking notes through OneNote, Mathematica, etc). For what it is it's a phenomenal product if you are into 2-in-1's. Having Windows on it means I don't have to worry about compatibility of programs and I get to use all of the normal software I use on my desktop. The pen is a bit weird for me in that it doesn't mark EXACTLY where it should -- it marks slightly below where I want it to on OneNote --- but it's decent enough for me to get used to. My only complaint is that the product itself feels not as strong as I would want it to be. I have to constantly be careful not to drop or put too much pressure on the damn thing for fear of cracking the screen.
