Arch-Linux has a great wiki, and people really ought to use it more often instead of asking stupid questions. Not Arch-derived OS, but just Arch itself. It really teaches you how to use Linux.

The great thing about Linux is that since it's open source, there's no limit to the granularity with which you may adapt it to your specific needs.
Ubuntu isn't the BEST distro, it's just the BROADEST distro, in terms of suiting one's needs. Depending on how specific and critical your needs are, another distro may be better for you, or in some very rare cases you might even be best off rolling your own. It's all about labor versus returns -- whether whatever case-specific additional convenience a distro might offer is worth the labor necessary to install it.

Personally I use Ubuntu because my needs are simple and common. If my needs were even simpler and more common than they already are, I'd surely just use Windows. It is, after all, the easiest OS in the world to install, being that you don't even have to install it. (Never mind how depressing that is, when you start to delve into how it got that way.) However, my needs are not quite that simple: I have some specific idiosyncratic needs, that it seems the better part of the population does not share, and those needs are as follows:
>to be able to use my computer without being spied on, having xbox live, minecraft, and candy crush installed, or having to interface with a personal assistant based on a halo character
>to be able to change the way my GUI works to my liking, use the command prompt, automate certain tasks, develop software, and uninstall preinstalled software i don't need, all without having to feel like i'm hacking or breaking my own OS installation
>to be able to install most software i need with a single command per program, without opening a web browser
>to have control over when my computer does updates, and be able to continue using my computer during that time
>to be able to actually troubleshoot uncooperative software, instead of just having to cope with "encountered a problem and needs to close"

Steam provides devs with the ability to port a windows developed game to
Linux. Not really a win for Linux users.
