CPU >CPUs less threads usually suffer lower 0.1% minimums >Athlon 200GE - Bare minimal desktop/gaming >R3 2200G - Light gaming(dGPU optional) >R5 2400G - Consider IF on sale >R5 2600/X - Good gaming & multithreaded work use CPUs >i7-9700k/8700k - If you have a $2000+ budget and pairing with a 2080 or better >R7 2700/X - Best value high-end CPU on a non-HEDT platform >Threadripper/Used Xeon - HEDT
RAM >Always choose at least a 2 stick kit >8GB - Bare minimum/Light desktop use. >16GB - Standard amount >32GB - If you have to ask, you don't need this >CPUs benefit from fast RAM; 2933MHz+ is ideal. Check "more" for true latency formula
Graphics cards >RTX 2000 cards; cheap models usually low yield processor. Aim for factory OC versions for best performance >use your due diligence with cheap MODELS ie MSI Armor (Mk2 is ok), Gigabyte G1/Wf, ASUS dual, and others w/ small heatsinks and low quality fans. They may be cheap, but won't get high boost clocks like better models 1080p >RX 570/580/1060 6GB - standard 1080p 60fps+ options 1080p@144hz >Vega 56/1070ti best value, Free/G-sync monitor highly recommended 1440p@60-75hz >Vega/1070ti/1080/2070 1440p@100+hz >1080ti/2080 4K >Upscale from 1620-1800p. Or 2080Ti, but awful value OpenCL use >Vega 64
Storage >Backup before using StoreMi >Consider a larger SSD (better GB/$) instead of small SSD & HDD >2TB HDDs are barely more $ than 1TB >M.2 is a form factor, NOT a performance standard
Display >Always consider FreeSync w/ AMD cards >START YOUR BUILD WITH A MONITOR FIRST, then make a build to drive it appropriately
The EVGA seems to be pretty shit despite the price, am I overlooking something?

Got a S2716DGR for Christmas, and I have an rx 480 4gb (might be 8 no idea). The return deadline is january 12th one day after CES. I am thinking of returning and just keep using my vg248qe for a bit. Should I stick with the s27 or return it now and hope more stuff comes out at CES, or just soon at a decent time.
Is this good for 1440p 144hz gaming at mediumish settings? I imagine sitting at around 100-120 FPS will be good enough with Freesync active, yeah?
Austin Ward
posting from last thread:
i have a bunch of old components from years of previous buillds. I am trying to be charitable and give away a pc to a friend who cant afford a new rig at the moment. Here are the following parts:
>intel i5 750 cpu >amd phenom 1055t cpu > two 2gb radeon HD7870 >nvidia 750ti >kingston 120gb ssd >1tb WD blue 7.2k rpm hdd >550w PSU >some old ass thermaltake tsunami dream case
I am thinking of pairing the i5 with the 7870's in crossfire, would this be a decent set up? If crossfire is not a good idea given the power limits, would the 7870 be better than the 750ti?
Chase Clark
>104 is mid was. this isn't 2012 or 2014 anymore. so you can either protest, buy amd(which slightly worse than a 2070 while being 50 bucks cheaper) or bite the bullet.
Angel Cook
Oh yeah RAM is 2x8GB
Robert Campbell
Is this any good? nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/9YK3XP At the bottom of the page it says something about a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled, is that a bad thing or is it just because the SSD will take up a slot on the motherboard. Also are EVGA 2070's not released yet because every store I look at says pre-order
It just means if you use an M.2 drive, it disables some of the SATA ports.
Read your motherboard manual, it should specifically tell you which M.2 slot disables which specific SATA ports.
Worst case you can get an M.2 PCIe adapter, or a PCIe SATA card for more SATA ports, whichever makes the most sense for your specific build.

So I found a used gtx745 yesterday
If I'm currently running ryzen 2200g integrated graphics, would it be worth using the gtx745? Debian btw

Damage report from building my first PC: >have a large scratch on top of the case because I plugged cables into the PSU while it was lying on there >have visibly scratched off a logo on the mainboard from fidgeting around with the video card too much >pre-applied thermal paste on CPU heatsink is smeared all over the CPU since it has weird screws with springs and I had to try several times to get them it and pulled off the sticked-on heatsink a few times in the process >can't fit PSU cables in the case properly, have to apply force to the cover to shut it How fucked am I?
I am a brainlet building my first pc. Can I use this 320 hard drive I yanked out of a broken 2010 MacBook Pro? I’m trying to save some money and this hardrive looks brand new. Would it work with windows?
Worst case scenario is that the disk has a file system Windows can't recognize, in that case boot a Linux distro from a USB drive and format the hard disk from within Linux. Shouldn't be difficult.
Wyatt Rogers
they aren't USELESS, but by and large, they wont be a noticeable addition compared to a decent SATA SSD.
There are certainly a few games that can see some nice loading time increases due to the pure read speed, but it's generally not significant enough to bother with. Especially since SATA SSDs already have much improved IOPS performance over HDDs, as well as near instant access time, just like NVMe drives.
Brayden Turner
>If you need that many SATA ports though, you should invest in a server instead. Or you know, just buy a $20-30 add-on card for some extra drives.
No need to pay up for ECC and all sorts of other server/workstation specific hardware you don't need if all you need are additional SATA lanes.
Joshua Thompson
Have you considered saving a little bit more and getting a 580? You can get an 8GB one for under £200 with free games now. It'll age a lot better than a 1050.
Jose Flores
My current specs are as follows:
>i5 7600K (Kaby Lake) >16GB DDR4 >GTX 1070 >1440p
What would make more sense, if I wanted to increase 1440p gaming performance - a new CPU or a new GPU?
Christian Bell
I really doubt you get CPU limited in 1440p with a 1070. Upgrade GPU
Kevin Carter
I've been watching nvme benchmarks all morning and couldn't find a single game that benefits in a significant way. At best i was looking at 5 sec shorter load time(usually 1-1.5) compared to a regular ssd. So unless devs actually start using the tech, it's useless for vidya. Of course, if you're moving files all day then of course you'll see a big difference.
Oliver Foster
new GPU
Landon Howard
Oddly enough, CPU due to you being gimped by a quad core with no hyperthreading and what I assume are fairly shitty clocks unless you OC'd heavily. The 7600k has an all core turbo of 4ghz at stock with 4 cores.
The 9600k has 6 cores and can hit 4.3Ghz on all cores at stock
The 9700k has 8 cores and can hit 4.6Ghz on all cores at stock.
Landon Barnes
It's just something for the meantime, as my 560ti died recently and I'm on integrated HD 3000 right now, I'll upgrade again in a few months or a year.
Lincoln Rodriguez
>upgrading from my 970 >look up 970 prices just for shits and giggles >used ones are still going for around $200
What the shit?
Austin Thompson
Order the CPU through mindfactory, you're wasting 100€.
>CPU due to you being gimped by a quad core with no hyperthreading t. running a 6600k ithout OC in 1440p at high framerates
Adrian Thomas
What would be better? A 1080, 2070, 2080, or something else?
Brayden Gonzalez
Guess I saw a weird one, but I'm still shocked to see used GPU prices above $100 for a 2-year old mid-range card.
Jose Hughes
Any of them will do
Luis Stewart
What's the difference between the 1070Ti FTW Ultra Silent and the 1070Ti FTW2 They're the same price and I don't know which one to get, is one objectively better
Charles Thomas
You know that just depends on the games you play...right?
GTA 5 for example, is happy to use 6 or 8 cores over 4 cores, and will gladly take a higher all core turbo on top of it.
You could see 30-40fps gains easily, not to mention average fps, and minimum fps also getting a nice boost.
Just depends what games you're playing.
Joseph Wood
there is no reason anymore to get a 1050/ti. 570s and 580s are a tiny bit more expensive and provide a lot more power. 580s are something between a 1060 6gb and maybe a 1070 mini.
Lucas Russell
is gtx 1060 with gddr5x worth it?
Benjamin Wilson
>No need to pay up for ECC and all sorts of other server/workstation specific hardware you don't need if all you need are additional SATA lanes.
Who said anything about enterprise server grade?
A NAS or some HDD enclosure will do the job fine, its more about protecting data. It adds complexity, but it also has some conveniences to it.
Owen Price
it's the same shit as the gddr5 version
personally I would get a rx 580
Luke Brooks
No one considers a NAS a "server"
you said >If you need that many SATA ports though, you should invest in a server instead.
Are you really trying to argue that a 7600k is a bottleneck in 1440p when user is using a GTX 1070? Seriously?
Luke Price
i am planning to buy as soon as possible, since my pc is constantly crashing under weak/medium workload ( surprsingly this 300€ trash used pc lasted for 6 years )
I am considering getting the "be quiet! Pure Power 11".
In total everything would cost 675€.
Noah Ward
Not other user but you do realise that you can be cpu limited any any resolution - it all depends on what the game is doing at a given time right? A classic example is Civilisation - basically no matter what resolution you play at unless your gpu is horrifically underpowered the game is always cpu bound (hence why you can't use avg fps for benchmarking it - you have to use the turn time).
Gabriel Rodriguez
Without discussing the specific games in question, it's pointless to have this discussion.
You can post GPU bound games, I can post CPU bound games.
And in any case, more cores and a CPU that can achieve a higher single core clockspeed in general is going to increase your 0.1% minimum FPS even if you're not seeing significant gains in average FPS.
Elijah Campbell
Oh I definitely agree that having a better CPU is nice for average and low 0.1%. Just saying that in general (most games), you'll be GPU bound.
i don't have a usable case currently, so i'll have to get a new one anyway. would you have a recommendation for that?
also i'd like to gift you something for your help, i have some unused steam keys if you want
Adam Green
>New 1070s go for $600 here >I know a guy who can sell me 6-8 months old 1070s for $280-$320 >I can buy from him and flip it for $400 minimum owo if I sell a dozen or two cards I can easily get enough for upgrades, rate my plan fa/g/s
Lucas Smith
Is the Dark Rock Pro 4 going to give me trouble installing ram on the ASRock - Z370 Extreme4?
Chase Myers
>1050ti why not a 580? Those things are dirt cheap and they shit all over the 1050ti/1060.
Josiah King
Vega56 for 1440p@144hz if you play games like league or cs:go that need no performance yes you will get 144fps, if you play anything else 60fps is max on low settings
look into gskill ram mostly has better compatibility with ryzen
rest of the stuff seems solid, try to get an evga psu because fuck corsair
James Brown
get 8700k save 200€ and get a 2080 will do you better
Bentley Price
Get low profile ram (Corsair LPX) as the NH-D15 cooler will sit above ram. The meshify has good clearance, but any ram about 35mm and you will have to lose the front fan.
Not the end of the world, I stuck on a noctua 120mm fan, only losing 1 degree max, but low profile ram will give you less problems unlike my G Trident z's
But the NH-D15 has a cutout for RAM and the fan can just be mounted a little higher then instead of removing it entirely.
Jace Taylor
>if you play anything else 60fps is max on low settings >Vega 56 1440p >60fps is max on low settings
Joseph Lewis
The case has small clearance because its a compact case. The fan will his the glass with tall ram.
Also is meant for
Jack Torres
2k CAD budget including peripherals Building games in ue4/gaming LG 27ud68 W monitor already Not sure if I should build or buy
Adrian Taylor
I really can't decide on whether I should get the MSI or Gigabyte version
only real difference is that the Gigabyte has two fans, not really sure how the cooling is on the ITX
Robert Long
I'm actually considering maxing out my budget to go for a Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro+ for 600€ instead, since the GPU is the big bottleneck for the monitor I bought on Black Friday.
As for RAM, does it have to be G.Skill or can it be any B-die RAM? Or does the memory timing have to be low enough? This shit is confusing as fuck.
For PSUs I keep reading conflicting reports on Corsair, Seasonic and EVGA. Each one is either perfect or garbage depending on the source, I don't know what to believe anymore.
Luis Reyes
Fucking rate my plan you faggots
Isaiah Howard
UwU
Luke Johnson
I mean, yeah, sounds like a plan, assuming you don't get shagged by your own ineptitude or market forces.
Can someone please take a look? I'm otherwise looking to buy the parts today if possible. I already have a 2080ti btw. Coming from a 4790k (which I'm giving to family) is it worth to just go to 9700k instead of 8700k?
Good for what? If videogames, at what resolution/refresh rate?
Colton Gutierrez
I plan to sell my current card which I got from him, then I'll buy another and keep gayming on it until someone buys it, then it's rinse/repeat until I hit $2K.
Lucas Bailey
I'd compare benchmarks for the CPUs, you could also look up those channels on youtube which build PCs as cheap as possible, they'll probably have modern benchmarks of some of these parts. Crossfire 7870 might not be worth it desu, lots of hassle not much support. A single 7870 is definitely better than a 750ti
Carson Sullivan
My only question is; will he not realise what you're doing and start selling them himself?
Liam Edwards
Windows 10 is being dumb.
Anyone know why it would report the wrong speed?
Searching online this don't seem to be that uncommon.
AMD has their new CPUs coming out which should drive down 2000 series CPUs or give you a better option for the same price (Ryzen 3600 are hinted to be an 8 core/16 thread with 65wTDP) and they will announce the new GPU, which SHOULD drive down the 580 price (which is better in every metric than a 1060) or give you an idea whether to buy the new card or not. Get 3000mhz ram tho. It plays massively into how Ryzen works and the cost is probably similar. Team Vulcan has 16GB in an 2x8 format for £100 so probably around 120 europs. Stock AMD cooler is good enough on the 2000 series CPUs. I wouldn't bother buying an aftermarket unless you want to overclock and if you are overclocking, Noctua is your go to air cooler.
Basically wait till CES, which is the 8th - 12th of January and buy/build after that once prices shift. You'll either get a better computer for the same price as now or a cheaper computer for the same performance you are looking for.
John Torres
I love the meshify c, it or the define would work fine
New build im slapping together cause my last PC i built 6-7 years ago died. the 970 is going to be replaced soon, but im using it in the meantime
Benjamin Morales
Currently I have a i5 6500, 8GB of ram and a 1070, if I want to game at 1440p/100-144ish hz will this be enough? I dont mind turning some setting to medium, will be playing seasonal games like Anthem, Metro Exodus ( This one I dont mind having it at medium and 60hz) maybe some COD(?) And I know I need more ram so i´m only waiting for some kit to be on sale
looks fairly good actually. Drop the meme cooler and get a real one and get a bigger SSD (consider a normal SATA one if you don't need the extreme speeds of athe VME SSD. You might not want to pay full price for windows and the 1070ti has been replaced with the 2070 already.
