To clarify, under $40 for core 2 duo = good Under $70 for core i3-7 = good

The T410 got me through college when my HP died, and one of my jobs that demanded java/eclipse, sql, angular/node, and spring framework. It has the i7-640M, 8GB of RAM, and the 512 MB Nvidia GPU. I recommend it for being a tough book that got shit done, except vidya. It was initially locked by a supervisor password, but I shorted the eeprom and cleared it. Right now I'm going to turn it into a file server (maybe ftp) and store back up stuff from my other computers onto it, so I don't have to keep unnecessary data elsewhere.
no, running win 10 ltsb with a normal wallpaper here and giving 0 fucks

I don't remember, think it was $120 or so some years ago. Still in great condition with the wacom, centrino duo and win xp stickers on the palmrest though. Also an Illya decal because Illya a qt
Hey /tpg/ I've got an issue with my X220 I've had it about a year now, the best laptop I've ever purchased. A while ago it took a nasty fall and banged up the battery compartment and now the locks used for keeping the battery in place are fucked and won't keep the damn thing in place. Are their any ways I could fix it without buying a whole new part or replacement "chassis"?
Colton Nguyen
God I love that fuckin' image, thanks for postin'

help me choose? My current laptop is 8 years old and it's HDD space is about 750GB with ~400GB occupied. So I'm leaning towards either the 750GB one or the 1TB one.
I honestly don't know what's taking up all the space. I don't game much anymore. (used to play LoL, steam and some mmo on it years ago but all uninstalled now) I don't have any specialised softwares either. The biggest software installed is probably microsoft office 2013. Have some movies and tv shows on it + music.
Currency is in AUD
Also I don't see it in the description but all the laptops have inbuild wifi right?
Opinions on XPS 15 (9575) as a video editing station (mainly Sony Vegas)/ other recommendations in sub 2k USD range?

x240. way better put together than the HP or the E series. Maintenance is a snap. The only thing against it is if you want a larger panel size. Personally, I have never had a problem with working on a 12 inch display but others might.
Gavin Rivera
Where can I find the old (IBM-era) ThinkPad TrackPoint Classic Dome cover? For a reasonable price?
Andrew Bell
imo you're gonna have to replace the bottom chassis. It'll be annoying but i can't think of any other way to fix it. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours if it's your first time breaking the thing down.

>T420 running ESXi until my homelab is finished The i5 held 4 VM's surprisingly well, better than I expected, even with a running DC and a couple clients online. Up until I tried setting up an Exchange 2013 server at least, even with the full 8Gb of ram almost entirely dedicated to it, the thing kept eating ram by the bucketloads and demanded more.
Eli Phillips
it sounds like you're running windows. If you're not sure what's eating up your disk space you can try running a windows program like spacesniffer, which will give you a visual of where your storage is going.
Zachary Barnes
>T420 running ESXi Now I'm seriously considering doing that with my T440p because fucking nobody wants to buy it.
Go for it, perfect for learning the Sysadmin trade. 2 tips though: >Newer versions (5.5 and up IIRC) have less supported network adapters out of the box, officially it only supports Intel and Broadcom controllers, and will refuse to install if you don't have one. If you have a different controller (Realtek, etc), you have to either inject older drivers in the iso, or get a separate adapter. The homelab I'm building is now on hold because of that (Realtek controller), have a quad Gigabit Intel pcie card in transit). >Also, it will only install if you have 4Gb or more of ram. Again, either get more, or modify the iso to allow less
Logan Sullivan
It's fine, the stock and the docking station NICs are Incel. Also it has 8GB RAM, SSD, i7 4800mq and the FHD screen.
Jack Wood
You are good to go then, at least for low-demand systems. You'll soon realize you can never have too much ram or IO speed.
Mason Russell
Thoughts on the x1 carbon 6th gen? Wanted to buy a good laptop for the first time in my life.
Aiden Butler
bretty gud with all the bios fixes now, the obvious downside is that everything but ssd is soldered but if that's not a concern go ahead
Brandon Cox
Got my old laptop to replace for a new one. I want some 15" laptop. Which Thinkpad series is the must go ?
Noah Williams
Yeah. One nice thing about X and T series thinkpads is that you can swap out almost anything yourself if you have a screwdriver. You can look up the owners manual, or if you don't want to do that there's probably a process video on youtube. If you go with an HDD be sure you're buying one that fits laptops, not the desktop sized clunkers.

T series are lenovo's 14 to 15inch line. If you are okay with slightly older hardware there's also the W series (w530, w520, etc).
Alexander Richardson
how im keping my thinkpad cool as it compiles chromium
Better than E garbage, but they're not as well constructed and considered closer to your typical consumer laptop. If I were on a budget, I would rather get a slightly older T series instead of an L, because the software I typically run isn't very intensive on system resources anyways. If you're just going to be surfing and programming, for example, a T420 or 30 would be more than sufficient.
Chase Peterson
Yeah it's a bit of a shame but I don't really think it's going to be a problem, if the SSD would have been soldered then that would have been a deal breaker. I'm already looking for an 8th gen i7 with 16gigs of ram, and I'm pretty sure that's going to be enough for a long ass time.

gonna learn arch on my dinkpad for that sick nerd cred

Should I upgrade my t430 cpu with the i7 3632QM 35W or the i7-3840QM 45w
I'm tempted for the second one but it's almost double the price, would the gain be worth it?
Ayden Perry
have fun user, it's a good time
Benjamin Powell
I got it running in a VM and it seemed way easier than everyone made it out to be. Seems like as long as you're willing to read and do some research, you can get it set up and running just fine and always tweak things post install if need be.
I'm sick of seeing cool ThinkPads with CloverOS and/or anime figures/stickers on them/next to them. Stop being gay.

Refurbished T440s with 8 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, i5-4300U, 1080p IPS screen and 1 year warranty for $450. Yay or nay?
Hudson Adams
Nay. On just a surface search I'm finding 1080p ones with the i7 even for 350-400€
Camden Gutierrez
With warranty? If so, link pls

>X220 Free I wouldn't pay money for one of these dude what? people praise it like a god. And some people sell it like for 250€ to 350€ when it should cost 135€.
Fantastic laptops. Preinstalled windows self-destructs and uses all your resources so definitely install your own. Linux is well-supported (except for fingerprint reader). Docking stations are a scam. Make sure to get the expensive one which can deliver enough power to charge your battery while the laptop is on. The delivered connector is super short and needs to go in the back of the docking station. If you think docking means the end to fiddling with cables, you are dead wrong. And better install 15 drivers and/or deactivate thunderbolt security in BIOS/UEFI, or almost nothing will work out of the box.

Anyone have any luck with Ubuntu 18.10 fingerprint support? it lets me add mine on my x230 but it doesnt come up for login

So I upgraded my T520 from an i7-2640M to an i7-2720QM.
I used to get ~280CB with it and now I get ~490, which is a great improvement and it feels a lot snappier in general use.
However, what I've noticed is that before, while benchmarking, the CPU clock always stayed at 3.3-3.5GHz, its max turbo clocks. Now while benchmarking they top out at 3GHz (max all-core turbo) then gradually decrease until dropping to 2.6GHz.
Temperatures aren't a problem, they actually dropped from 80-85°C to 75-80°C load despite 10W more TDP. However I am running a 65W adapter. Is this what could be holding me back?
Also, if I want a beefier cooler I also essentially need a new motheboard, so which one would be the best one? I suppose W520 Quadro.
Yes that 65W is definitely holding you back, you're going to need a higher wattage one.
Landon Taylor
Does anyone have any photos of W700/W700ds (or W701/ds) attached to the Mini Dock? Curious to see how much more bulky these fuckers can get, and searching on Google only gets me pictures of the dock itself with no Thinkpad attached.

T500 near me in great condition, is rocking a T9400 and wondering if I should splurge and libreboot it for around 60-70$

How can I get a think pad that doesn't spy on me
Jacob Reyes
should I get the x1 carbon or the t480s Jow Forums?
which thinkpad is best for some digital drawing (i.e. screen with pen input) was looking at an x220T
Nicholas Rodriguez
isn't the thinkpads unhygienic
Bentley Hill
alright i need your help Jow Forums
I need a thinkpad that can photoshop/edit video, is lightweight/portable, can play some games and is easy to lay in bed with and watch movies and impress a girl?
I'm going to be replacing my desktop and i want it to replace these specs.
Would the w520 suffice or is there something better, like something from the t series?
A W520 won't impress a girl. and its fucking heavy and big too.

I just bought a new japanese keyboard from china and it wasn't new as described and one of the keys pops off when I press on the corner. It took months to arrive and it would take forever to work with the seller. The key just looks like it is missing a latch. Is there a way to get a replacement key for a japanese keyboard or somehow get the key to stay on?
Juan Watson
How can you even play that properly? Don't Thinkpads have like two key rollover?
Jaxson Garcia
What would you chose between a x250 with an i5-5300U and a x260 with an i3-6100U? The first one also comes with a ssd and the other with a spinner, but I already have a spare ssd. I found both at the same price and the other specs are pretty much the same.
Dylan Morris
Ordered my first thinkpad refurbished T440 for 400 bucks with 480gb SSD and 16gb RAM.
Im going to install qubeos on it. Anyone using it on a tpad?
