All consoles are old now.

Consoles are not technology. Everyone knows they're made of magic.

Cars are technology, but they go on /o/. Retard.

AMD has the better offering in the semi-customs gpu market.

Novideo can't compete.

what isn't technology?
guns, anime, clothes (fashion), graphics, etc it's all technology

Current gen consoles too.

Much like MacOS, the PS4 uses a BSD based system and and GPUs work well with that. Unlike MacOS the PS4 isn’t fully certified posix compliant unix.

The only good APU manufacturer. Instead of buying CPU and GPU separately they just buy APU.

AMD basically designed the Xbox One and the PS4, which is why the consoles are extremely similar. Can't blame Microsoft and Sony for going with AMD when AMD practically did all the work for them while they get to collect the royalties. Wonder is AMD will wise up by next-gen and go into business for themselves.

>Wonder is AMD will wise up by next-gen and go into business for themselves
Never going to happen. It's like asking why won't LCD panel manufacturers go into TV and monitor business.

Well why don't they?

Then just rename the board, "arguing over programing languages and linux distros."

Except Samsung and LG do just that.

Don't like it, then go back to /v/. I'm sure they'll be willing to talk about your toys there.

They are more interested in selling their products in bulk to the likes of Apple, LG, Samsung, Lenovo, etc.

LG and Samsung are powerhouses with a lot of expertise in different fields, unlike AMD.

Really? Did they take away all the FreeBSD syscalls and replace them with those fucky SCE functions that you see in homebrew forums.

Samsung and LG make their own LCD screens and both use them in their own products and sell them to third parties. The screen in most ThinkPads, for instance, is Samsung or LG made.

Cheaper

AMD already proved it could design a console in that it basically designed both the PS4 and Xbox One. Considering that neither Sony nor Microsoft manufacture their respective consoles, and simply outsource it there's nothing stopping AMD from doing the same.

Your own article proves what I said, Samsung manufactures its own LCD panels. Just because they use some third party panels doesn't invalidate my point.

Well in Sony's case the PS3 was a fucking disaster. It had massive cost overruns, the "revolutionary" cell CPU ended up being a dud, had no gaymes, etc. Thus, when it came time for the PS4 they decided to use more traditional, off the shelf hardware.

>tfw standard ps4let
>got a 4k tv now but can’t justify paying 400€ for an upgrade of a console I own

Guess I’ll wait for ps5.

>build your own console
>receive pressure from Sony and Microsoft
>no games
>no IP
>no contracts with studios
>no distribution

We really should. There should be a separate board for shopping too. Then the consumerism across all boards could go away.

MS used NVIDIA and Intel for the original Xbox, and both of them jewed the fuck out of ms. Whereas AMD has been a great partner for all console manufacturing.

In what way did they Jew MS? The original Xbox was far and away the most powerful console of that generation.

Good goy

>buying consoles

MS was naive during licensing and got screwed especially by NVIDIA. Which is why they were so fast about getting out the 360 with ATI.

fuck off kiddo

AMD made a deal with them

Because AMD at the time had financial rope around its neck due to massive FX failure so they offered to make the console APUs essentially for free with barely enough margin to just stay above the water.

And next gen consoles will use AMD because they can deliver an amazing price/performance ratio product at the moment and that's what matters for console manufacturers.

They need to go with dirt cheap APUs because they're for the lowest common denominator.

Backwards compatibility, not just for games but the entire ecosystem.

They can reuse everything and just evolve it, instead of building everything from scratch.

> Why do next-gen consoles use AMD GPU's?
Because it's easier and cheaper for them to just buy a CPU + GPU from one company.

Nvidia only do GPUs, Intel only do CPUs.

Sony tried making their own CPUs with the PS3. It was hugely expensive, and didn't pay off.

Because nVidia took a part of their corporate souls the last time they had a relationship with that crazy company.

>essentially for free with barely enough margin to just stay above the water.

No one else makes x86 SoCs worth a damn.
Twice as valid for PS5/X2 gen.
That's not how it happened, but whatever.
That's how their SC unit works.

>In what way did they Jew MS?

IIRC, the way their contract worked, the Nvidia cards never got any cheaper, even years later when they were outdated shit. No idea about Jewtel, though.

They could have used Intel/Nvidia and nobody would tell the difference.

OTOH the SoC in the Switch is really unique and could only come from Nvidia.

I remember Xbox (Huge) sales going up toward the end when Halo 2 really caught on but them becoming unavailable because Microsoft didn't want to keep making them at a loss (due to Intel strong-arming over supply).

>SoC in the Switch is really unique

It's a fucking recycled Tegra. That's why hacking and emulation progressed so fast because Tegra is well-documented.

Sure, with dual core celeron and gt710 gpu. Apu in og ps4/xbone costs like 35 bucks.

Yes, the Tegra was/is quite unique. There are really low power passively-cooled SoCs (smartphones/tablets), and high-power stationary SoCs (consoles), but the Tegra went down the middle, being efficient enough for portability but powerful enough and with active cooling to be respectable on a TV and under sustained load (Apple/Qualcom SoCs look amazing until you realize they throttle way back after a minute under load).

There's a historical reason why Sony and Microsoft won't put any nvidia chip in their consoles, specially not Microsoft. NVidia signed a contract with MS for the first XBox but then they decided that making them chips wasn't profitable enough so they demanded that MS pay more per chip than the contract said. This dragged on and on and wasn't settled by the time manufacturing costs of those chips came down. NVidias has a similar falling out with Sony, there were less articles and public information on that dispute but the story's somewhat similar.

It's been a long time since the first xbox so who knows how much of a factor this is today.

AFAIK the OG Xbox was weird in that Microsoft didn't have the rights to make the whole thing themselves. They figured they'd build a console out of standard PC parts and benefit from the normal cycle of PC parts getting cheaper, not realizing their suppliers would have them over a barrel as MS because the only captive customers of these old parts.

Normally (every other case AFAIK) the console maker owns full rights to the design and can source manufacturing from whoever they want.

*as MS became the only captive customer...

Intel and Nvidia no longer wanting to make those old otherwise unsellable parts makes perfect sense, as does their demanding Microsoft pay them a sweet premium to keep doing so.

because nvidia cant into CPU and intel cant into GPU

AMD is the only one does both in a single package with decent performance, thus cutting cost significantly.

I'm looking forward to future Intel iGPU offerings, considering all the money and talent they've been throwing at it. Not in consoles obviously but laptops.

AMD has issues competing with nvidia and Intel and you want them to start throwing punches at Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? Might as well start competing with Ford and Chevrolet or some other company in a very specialized field with lots of mindshare and capital.

Because if optimized properly they deliver better performance than nvidia GPUs at a lower cost. For example you can still find a lot of old rx 570s for under $150, good luck getting a brand new gtx 1060 for under $200.

Nvidia promised sony a considerably more powerful chip than what they actually supplied. As a rule nobody works with Nvidia twice if they can help it - I would honestly be surprised if Nintendo does again. I would anticipate Nintendo to design their next home device to avoid relying on the technology only Nvidia has (which is basically cpu + gpu in such a low power envelope).

Not really, their finewine meme can slowly creep the FPS 2-5% every couple of months or so without game devs having to optimize anything.

AMD had the better offering. Also, apparently, Nvidia is full of corp jerks that put too many hurdles if you want to use their products.

I hope consoles don't drop amd now that they have better products all around.

>wasting money on overrated pajeet like Koduri
seems like intel's iGPU performance progression will only be done by adding moar EU cores

He was a big reason why vega launch was botched and only a few games got to efficiently use the vega architecture to it's full potential.

You can only expect intel graphics to get WORSE now.

But the switch uses an entire Nvidia Chipset!
Must be why its graphics are so...

Because Nvidia demands really high profit margins from each GPU sold, even if you buy already obsoleted shit in bulk like with Switch (~$40 profit per unit sold). They also don't have APUs unless you want ARM shit, so you'd also have to find a CPU vendor which would drive up R&D costs as well as limit cost cutting abilities in the future. Another thing is that you want to pic and stay with one manufacturer through the entire development cycle, otherwise you end up like the original Xbox which was originally supposed to have AMD CPU and after they changed it more or less last minute to Intel they didn't catch different behavior of those two which broke its security model.

:^)

>Next Gen ??

The piss 5 and xbone xxxistential

Nvidia fucked over their relations with Sony and Microsoft badly, same with intel and MS.

360p xenoblade.

Yep most of them

Miyamoto should call tim cock to see if he will sell apple chips.

it's current gen you fucking retard

PS4 is last-gen.

Anime is art, not tech

nvm, saw summary further down in the thread

I didn't know there was a school of magic specifically for making Jewish vacuum cleaners.

I thought it was because of a deal allowing unlimited access to huff the customers' farts.

>once again people are buying amd because nvidia and intel are jew
When will they learn

Oh user, I have so much to teach you...

Its T'Chalas adopted white brother who is older. Who goes by the name the White Wolf.

It's literally the old android console that was released in 2015.

art is technology retard

What's the die area of Apple's chips? Are they actually cost competitive? I'd assume they dedicate a lot more resources to CPU v. GPU compared to the tegra.

What if they go for that Intel+Vega chip for the next gen consoles? Isn't that chip quite good for what it is?

The GPU size has grown over the years as they've added more GPU cores, but they have since switched from PowerVR graphics cores to their own in-house design which they would need to share documentation with Nintendo if they wanted to use it in their own devices. I don't see that happening without Nintendo paying bucket loads of cash.

You mean current gen?
Anyway, because AMD gave them the best deal

LITERALLY bought a gtx 1060 6gb 3 months ago for $85

It will likely be next iteration of vega or navi + ryzen 3000 series.

Considering that Sony has been sending Zen patches to GCC for quite some time that is highly improbable.
