Actors have not been strictly necessary since at least the 1930s. However, live action costs less than animation and most people seem to prefer live action, either intrinsically or through force of habit. I would prefer it if more movies, especially science fiction, fantasy and horror, were animated. I think my wish may come true because computers will make stylized animation (3D or fake 2D) cheaper and easier to produce before they make realistic 3DCG similarly cheap.

See, this gives me another idea, actors could get paid to appear in movies, but wouldn't need to actually act out the whole thing. It has been done before and will be easier in the future.
