I mean even like the one right now on Debian stretch is pretty good if you install it minimally. The default option is pretty bloated. The minimal setup is apt install --no-install-recommends gdm gnome-tweak-tool gnome-shell-extensions, though I personally add nautilus since I don't like the other alternatives. I think that misses the xdg directory and also needs to be installed if it isn't by default to create the downloads music documents etc default shortcuts. That way I get less than 700MB of usage and is more functional than Xfce which is unusable for me on a laptop, maybe for a desktop with a mouse it would be ok, but default shortcuts of gnome are perfect.

I started with 1.4 and upgraded to 2.4. I switched to openbox after I set up my openboxrc. Now I use 4GB machine after my desktop died.
For me it used 300MB combined with gnome shell (~100MB) and other shit. I had to fucking restart it to reduce the bloat.

I went with a 197 day up time once with gnome but it required restarting gnome shell from time to time. It seems didn't help with Xorg bloating up though. I don't know what the fuck was wrong with me back in 2015. I guess heartbreak is one hell of a drug. Now I only use Iridium with occasional use of Icecat.
