Sandy vagina at mid 4ghz is decent but it is the secondary support that lets it down compared to more modern chips. If your only concern is "muh vidya fps" then sure, a highly clocked 2600k (nyet on the 2500k) will keep you going but for anything else - meltdown and spectre lol - it gets royally ravaged by anything else you can buy today.

Multiple cores do allow more work to be done at a time, but miltithreading comes with overheads that make the boost from using 2 threads a lot less than 2x depending on the task. Some tasks of course can't be multithreaded, and you just have to wait on one core to do it.

To be fair all but the most tuned of linux or BSD deployments will run hundreds if not thousands - of effectively background tasks amd depending on the hardware involved this can consume a significaant or insignificant portion of cpu and memory resources before a given workload is factored in. Every OS scheduler is multi-threaded by requirement.

Still this doesn't mean you can just ignore single core speed and put lots of cores.

It does depending on deployment. If you entirely bound by overall throughput (see: servers) low throughput cores means nothing if you can fit >1.x within a dice space of the competitor. Ultimately that is the downside of bulldozer due to Intel's node advantage but these days MOAR COARS with a relatively minor performance defecity means single core perforance is irrelevantr as your scaling is greater.

My SRS BSNS workload demands plenty of ram (8-16gb) but fuckall cpu as its entirely based around excel sheets with shitloads of links and as such any cpuj vendor will do. While an upgrade is due next year (Q1) I anticipate IT department will roll Intel just cos. The side advantage is I get to yoink all the old machines and fuel my home NAS machine with it.

I was talking specifically about smartphones, a use case that is practically all about responsiveness, not throughput. Video encoding and decoding are the common throughout oriented and very multithreading friendly task for them, and they typically use dedicated hardware to accelerate it.

Back in ~+-2001 Intel released HT(or as you call them today: threads..), it was most expensive CPU with shittiest performance.
Amd released 64 bit x2 cores but without HT.

Almost 20 years later people adopted 6 to 8 cores and HT does not ruin performance.
But, tact stayed at 3Ghz(+-1ghz, but mainstream is still 3ghz).

Honestly, at this point I see more of future in fucking ARM(and I dont believe I'm saying this).

x86 is coming to it's natural end, gainz slowed down drastically in last 20 years, both companies use every fucking trick in the book to hide that fact .

Please, do tell when will you see program that uses 24 cores and 48 threads(and it's not Winrar or benchmark vaporware game/program that has 10 times better alternative ).
Also, I kinda do remember having more than 5 programs open waay back in a day with just 1 core@ let's say 333mhz..
