I've been using runbox.com for a few years now (after the death of lavabit). It's hosted in Norway with strong privacy laws and costs like 20$ a year. Support is wonderful and there are a lot of addresses still available. Very recommended.

A bank or insurance won't encrypt their e-mails. Lack of knowledge & internal regulations.

ProtonMail's only real selling point is their short domain pm.me, but it's gated behind an overpriced paid account, and they can't be trusted as make you rely either on the browser JS crypto or a closed-source bridge. I think their server source is closed, too.
Tutanota is slightly better because it's more open. They have a dedicated app for desktop, but it's an electron build so it's the same shitty JS crypto. Their premium is much cheaper too.

Other providers like Posteo or Runbox seem fine but probably face the same problems as PM and Tutanota.
I'd say a good option would be to look into possibly using GPG alongside Tutanota or one of the other services. Only going for the inbox and expecting it to be secure is falling for the snake-oil sold by these companies.

I think run box and posteo have none of the problems that tutanota and proton have. Apart from an uglier web ui, but I use neomutt/mutt anyway.

Use a small, U.S. based one man e-mail provider that focusses on privacy. All I can say.

I would avoid e-mail providers from yurop. And the big ones as well, obviously.
