Welcome to /dbt/ - Daily BSD Thread

Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about BSD and share their experiences.

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out BSD you can do one of the following:
0) Install a BSD distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the BSD distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the BSD distribution of your choice along with Windows or GNU/Linux.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with BSD.

Resources: Please spend at least a minute to check a web search engine with your question.

what a neat apu

I have a spare think pad t500. What's the best bsd for it?

I find these threads hilarious, not for anything in the threads, but the fact that they started out as forced macfag shill threads a year ago, and then macfags got driven out of them by actual BSD users.

any bsd recommended for laptop?
avoiding freebsd because gay.

Reminder that OpenBSD is lacking the following things:
>A robust filesystem such as ZFS, btrfs, or HAMMER2
>Any kind of journaling FS
>SSD TRIM
>NFSv4
>Support for more than one core on various parts of the OS. The firewall, pf, is confirmed to be one of these parts, although there may be more.
>802.11ac networking
>Nvidia graphics from this decade
>AMD Vega graphics
>Certain Intel graphics, at least judging from comparing the manpage to the wikipedia article
>Broadcom wireless
>Bluetooth
>WINE
>LUKS/dm-crypt
>Linux compatibility layer
>Mounting ext filesystems
>free(1)
>lsblk(8)
>Proper virtualization (vmd/vmm is awful compared to KVM+QEMU or even Virtualbox)
>and probably more

openbsd if integrated graphics, freebsd if not

Most SSDs have built in wear levelling now, its a non-issue

this

Yeah because mac users arent welcome anywhere except coffee shops

oh, well, if that's the case then I guess I could forget about everything else on that list

what is gay about freebsd
can you fuck off, 90% of what you say is false and you enter every one of these threads with this.
plus - no one here even likes openbsd.
go away, GNU/Retard

glub glub can I run your routers, frens? am very secure

If you're going to be problematic then don't use FreeBSD. You are not welcome here.

Thinking of installing something new on thinkpad t400 ddciding between debian void freebsd and openbsd. Convince me which one I should pick, might be librebooting soon, liberty bsd will also then be considered.

apu is a frenly frog

That's Pepe, the alt-right mascot.

You are not welcome here.

Incorrect .

netBSD

It's project trident now

Which ones are those? I'd like to know because I was running Mac OS (inb4 macfag, itoddler, etc) on a hackintosh and there was this bug after the Mojave update that disabled SSD trimming on two SSDs, those being a Samsung and Crucial. I didn't notice until about a week later when the system became unbearably slow. I got it working again by configuring some bootloader related stuff but these were fairly new SSDs, about a year and a year and half old. Both of them got fucked when the OS stopped trimming them.

Help. I've been compiling xorg on my thinkpad t40 for like at least a day now. I always have to confirm stupid configuration prompts. How long will this shit take me?

holy fuck it finished. and works!

What advantages does NetBSD have over OpenBSD and DragonflyBSD?

it work on your toaster

Nobody uses it not even SJW so yeah no gay users on NetBSD

I don't have a toaster.
So no development?

This is what sucks about bsd Vs Gentoo. In Gentoo you choose your use flags (prompts in bsd ) in advance and just let it run.

>So no development
Pretty much as active as OpenBSD about

So we agree openBSD is the ancap bsd right

I installed freebsd yesterday the only problem I had was:
>Xorg -configure always gave segfault, but when it did work the drivers were all 'vesa' but switching to 'intel' fixed starts

netbsd.org/docs/misc/index.html#exportability
Wow. NetBSD is cucked.

Yeah that's why openBSD is ran out of Canada, at least they don't have those issues

Jow Forums is now normalfag-tier
get with the times, oldcuck

Bump for beastie apu

You can't stop me from compiling x-piratez!

I have NetBSD on my T400. Go with it.

was busy compiling vim and i3. nothin personnel kid.

Attached: screen.png (1024x768, 129K)

Lol get a real OS, kid.

FrenBSD

You have autism and your uptime is shit

Attached: Untitled.png (1366x768, 353K)

Try `make config-recursive` before running `make install clean`. It allows you to configure the port and all the ports that the port that you are trying to build depends on, immediately.

Thank you based user

wouldn't using non-defaults on dependencies eventually fuck up other programs that depend on it

DAILY REMINDER THAT THE
only way to get full hardware acceleration for your gpu on freebsd is to use propietary nvidia drivers
:-)

How am i supposed to get the fucking thinkpad trackpad to work on bsd, synaptics isnt working like it would on linux

It literally just works. I have blank xorg.conf and for extra confiness for thinkpad

xinput set-prop "/dev/wsmouse" "WS Pointer Wheel Emulation" 1
xinput set-prop "/dev/wsmouse" "WS Pointer Wheel Emulation Button" 2

at ~/.xsession

Hold my beer and watch this.

Why is OpenBSD stuck with such an outdated filesystem?
If someone ports HAMMER2, will they merge it into the tree or reject it because "muh attack surface"?

Use Solaris.

What WMs are available in OpenBSD?
What DEs are available in OpenBSD?

i'll probably try openindiana or tribblix

How's virtualization on BSD? Will I loose alot performance if I use NetBSD as a main offline OS from which I would boot Linux/Windows VMs? How's IOMMU support? I just want to pass through GPU and PCI-e network card.

tldr; can one use BSD as glorified bios?

>Why is OpenBSD stuck with such an outdated filesystem?
Because they are autists thats why.

>If someone ports HAMMER2, will they merge it into the tree or reject it because "muh attack surface"?
Probably that is what happened with ZFS when somebody ported it. Too many lines of code == unsafe. Never made it to release from dev branch RIPS

>openbsd
this is bad advice

Look at all these foolish kids who use linux and all these sjw fags who use FreeBSD HAHAHAH you homosexuals make me laugh! HEH better yet HYA HYA HYA
It is I, Lord F A T M A N I P P O true openbsd FREEBETA 6.66 os writer and Biggest fan of Temple OS on earth.
If you want to meet some true BSD lords who can sell you their services with ultimate BSD setup for your servers and router needs, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN IRC.RIZON.NET #BAOT
thats right, download yer preffered irc client and /server irc.rizon.net then /join #baot
(hot 18 year old japanese or white girl virgins who watch a lot of anime and listen to JCORE especially wanted for joining #baot, but all are welcome!)
-fatmanippo
PS.....HEH

we generally dont care about proprietary software on this side of town, fuck off, this is why BSD has it's own (way more permissive) license and doesnt just use GPL

nice projection

so FreeBSD has double the commits of OpenBSD, and Linux has double the commits of FreeBSD?

I wouldn't quite call that BTFO considering project sizes.

jesus christ, can your window decorations get any larger?

>holy my beer
Retarded UI too

if you wanted to imitate macos you shouldve installed freebsd

Is there a bsd that is similar to gentoo? How do I use ext4 on bsd? (I had tried some bsd and ext4 isn't recognized apparently.)

BSDD virtualization is hot garbage.

Yep.

BSD noob here.

I currently develop on a mac and run in prod on Linux via docker. I'm interested in BSD as a server instead of Linux. Is jails the best way to have good containerization.

How can i guarantee the code I'm developing on locally is going to work on the server?

Also, I don't like polluting my local machine with software I run with production, so i like to containerize locally as well (docker).

How would the containerization story work developing on mac and deploying to BSD?
