There's inwardly eccentric and outwardly eccentric. In my experience, those who go out of their way to prove how unique they are to those around them are more interested in the hacker lifestyle than in practice. They are usually the ones overly involved in the infosec "community" rather than research. They foment the majority of the interpersonal infosec drama and provide little in the way of actual contributions to the field. This is by no means universal, I know a gentleman with a purple mohawk that makes his living finding Microsoft bugs, and a very good living at that. But, in general, those that are hackers for the sake of hacking are not the ones wearing knee-high docs and black lipstick. We wear our individuality on the inside

You can call yourself a writer or a historian and there's very little objective metric to determine whether or not you're a fraud. However, you can't call yourself a mathematician if you can't satisfy a proof.
This scale also exists within fields themselves. I don't know much about math but I'm willing to bet there is to mathematicians what webdev is to us, ie a subset of the field that is regarded as piss easy, normie-friendly and happens to be, mysteriously, the most politicized and left wing.

I've been to a famous 4 days no stop conference about hacking the last year.
The place was a park, where people could listen to security talks or just stay in the tent.
Now, you have to immagine the situation, we are in a fucking park full of hundreds of people, cables and computer, the conference organizers also created a special CTF for the guests, with prizes, the CTF server was in the center of the park, surrounded by switch, routers, a firewall, cables and repeaters.
A mess happened during the night, there were people drunk everywhere, i remember a guy drunk af walking and shouting all around the park: "Exploit!, Who want's an exploit?! Cheap price!" And things like that.
Me and my friends were very tired and at the 1am we decided to go to the hotel nearby.
The next morning the CTF server was missing, switch and other things where there but the server was not.
Now, there were a lot of routers and switch, more expensive than a shitty server, so the organizers weren't able to understand why just the server was missing, watching the logs on the firewall to estimate "the time of the abduction" was clear that during the night someone tried to hack the server. But it's a security conference, i mean, it's normal no?
During the afternoon me and my firends decide to go to a talk called: "10 years of pentesting unveiled", the guy, a men of 45 years has an hour talk based on a presentation of 3 slides.
The first was the title.
The second was a picture of him drunk walking on a wind turbine blade exposed in the park with the server.
This grown up man tried all the night pentesting the CTF server, when he understood that it was "too safe" he simply walked at the center of the park and stole it.
Lesson: "Doesn't matter how much your system it's virtually protected if someone can walk there and take it".
Defcon was super lame this year and it was full of PC culture bullshit. Also, so many normies attend now its insane. This years badge was pretty easy but just opening the badges terminal was fucking magical to so many people. It was fun but it'd be better if they sold fewer tickets desu.
