The Haafees are just way more pleasant to listen to. They're also a bit bassier. The Fostexes have boosted treble with a few spikes which accentuate sibilance in a bad way, while the HD1 sounds smooth all the way. You can use EQ as a bandaid of sorts on the fostexes.

The only places where the X00 pulls ahead are build/comfort and stage. The HD1 is admittedly built like shit, though not the kind of shit that feels like it's going to fall apart tomorrow.

I read on head-fi it requires removing some plastic bits.
Yeah, that's the size. The ear hole opening is really small but the pads are also extremely soft. I really like the comfort. It fits most of the ear inside, excluding the earlobe.

Sub bass is more about seal than transducer type. It's also extremely easy to EQ. I have an L300 with L700 pads and I boost everything below 100Hz by 4dB. It's not much different for other headphones.

Never tried superlux but I wouldn't mind KSC75 + HD1 as my only headphones for an extended amount of time.

How about the Phillips shp9500 for 80 dollars and the Takstar Pro 82 for 50 dollars. All in all, both are super comfy.
