Yes, it does. It's at least one die hop, possibly two. So there's no 100% scaling in most workloads. Also it will consume more power and comparing a 12/16 core with an 8 core would seem pretty unfair, especially if we are months away from the launch and prices aren't set in stone yet. And comparing it to a xeon wouldn't do much either. It's really the best example they could have given us. We know zen2 is more efficient and more powerful than intels top of the line consumer chips even with this early silicon, and we know that there will also be higher core count variants too.

The mid range, 75w, non X Ryzen 3000 engineering sample on pre-release clocks already, at a bare minimum, matches the 8700k in single core performance. How much of that is IPC vs clocks remains to be seen, but in either case the release version is going to score 200+ in single core Cinebench tests, putting is above Coffee-Lake in single core.

Intel no longer has a single core performance advantage, and Ryzen 3000 goes up to 2x the cores. Intel is fucked until they get a new node and a new uarch, because comet lake will have to forfeit single core performance on its 10-core due to thermonuclear TDP.

Honestly, it's probably because the engineering samples coming back from TSMC weren't up to par yet to show off a stable 2x8 core chiplet setup just yet.

We have to remember, this was just a demo of the technology, and not of any actual products yet. AMD was showing us teasers of what their new TSMC 7nm node and Zen 2 architecture have to offer. For a mid-range 8 core ES beating the 9900K like this, it spells doom for Intel, plain and simple.
