it's useful for recognition and prediction tasks.
if you need to determine what something is in front of a sensor, it's cheaper to use a machine than a human, and it's gotten to the point where the machines outperform humans at these particular kinds of tasks.

ML is essentially applied statistics. It has a wide range of applications and it will benefit a lot of domains (but then again, so does every technology).

Machine learning is an attempt to further the race to the bottom. Hiring humans is expensive. You need to put them somewhere, you need to give them desks, you need to give them breaks, you need to give them a salary. That's why machine learning is being used to get rid of humans. Once you have an amazing sale AI, you can safely let go of your under preforming staff and save money. An AI doesn't need half the things a human needs, and it can run 24/7. It is a race to the bottom.
