Why doesn't Jow Forums repair their own tech...

Why doesn't Jow Forums repair their own tech? For that matter why isn't Jow Forums more supportive of "the right to repair" movement?

The feeling of satisfaction that comes with taking a dead piece of tech, and breathing new life into it is indescribable. Why does Jow Forums readily bend over to get their anus plowed in by the tech industry???

lead fumes

Industry has been using lead-free solder since the 80's my good friend.

I blew most of my money on instrumentation and had very little left over for actual repair equipment. I have one Hakko FX-888D with one oxidized chisel tip and it's not really suited to SMD rework, it's honestly barely suited to THT at this point. I have no hot air rework equipment nor a vacuum desoldering pump. For that matter I'm out of flux and solder braid too.

You're basically missing everything ya. You can get away with some cheap chinese knockoff equipment these days. I think i paid somewhere around $100 for an Aoyue hot air rework station around 7 years ago. Works fine to this day and I use it for everything from swapping out broken connectors to changing smd LED's to softening the glue that's found on every damn modern piece of tech for some reason.

i usually repair stuff like bluetooth speaker, toasters, and basic soldering stuff. I'm really not sure i could repair anything more complex. i tried modding my GBA sp once and absolutely trashed it, would've been cheaper to buy a new one in that case.

but i do agree that a lot of people nowadays are really too keen on buying new stuff and wasting their money

>the absolute retard of my brother paid 80$ for someone to switch out his screen for a new one that he already had
>girl from college paid 200$ for a new lcd replacement, only for me to find out the previous one was working perfectly fine and the dumb bitch got it disconnected by dropping it on the floor
I seethe too much for my own good

>repair their own tech?
Why fix it if it's not broken? If you buy Apple products then yeah, you'll probably have to repair that garbage. Other laptops don't have those problems.

As for cellphones.. My Redmi 4 Prime cost me $150. I've had it quite some time. I do get the desire to repair a $1000 phone, and it's worth paying $150 to get one repaired if you can't do it yourself. At $150.. I'll just get a newer one if my current breaks.

Lead-free solder is unironically the reason why GPUs melt.

>Why doesn't Jow Forums repair their own tech?
I've repaired a PSU once. Wasn't worth the effort.

>why isn't Jow Forums more supportive of "the right to repair" movement?
Who said that?

*poor engineering
It's perfectly possible, common even, to design products that don't spontaneously brick themselves.

>Wasn't worth the effort.
Yeah, that sort of thing makes more sense as a hobby. Though I wish there were a way to recycle dead electronics so they don't go to a burning trash pile in southeast asia.

why don't you just shut the fuck up?

Lead free solder is basically cancer.
It's shitty and don't contact well

>Why doesn't Jow Forums repair their own tech?

Because most tech these days isn't end-user repairable by virtue of being so small, slim, cheap, etc. If companies have to start making tech more repairable, it's going to make stuff bigger & more expensive, which nobody wants.

Lewis is bad with soldering desu.
Lead free soldering is shit tho.

I repair my own stuff but people going on and on about right to repair are always so fucking boring.
You are just replacing parts on the board, stop acting like its something more than it is.

Once you know about it its hard not to see it being similar to people talking about how hard it is to build a PC

Yeah, I love cracked solder joints.

At this point it's cheaper to just buy new

I do, and I am.

but I do, user. My personal mantra is: if I can no repair it myself, then I should not buy it. My thinkpad t440p is the last laptop w/ a socketed processor, my lg g5 is the last phone with the removable battery, and I can disassemble every piece of electronics I own.
Can't always repair stuff that requires soldering tho - parts are often hard to find.

He says he's bad at it all on his own, and that if his shaky ass hands can do it, so can anyone else's.

>melt
Nah, it's because of metal fatigue due to repeated thermal expansion. Pure tin does not handle flexing as well as lead, so it eventually cracks.

I dont just repair my tech, i improve it
When i was younger i used to buy new mid-range sennheiser headphones about twice a year because their shape is nice but they break at the same point every time(cable exit right under the phone)
After about 7th pair i decided that im not comfortable with buying new headphones so often so i bought a few headphones with qualities i liked and reassembled them into one ultimate pair
Use it for 3 years already and its pretty much perfect in every way, perfect shape, nice sound and durability of a rock(encasement of all internals in syntheric construction foam is so good i wonder why its not widespread, its fucking perfect for both sound insulation and adhesive functions)

Most of those I've heard speak on it are happy to announce how simple the task was.
It's about doing something easy and cheap to save dead tech, not pretending to be a fucking savant.

Yes anyone with a brain can solder.
My fucking uncle has Parkinsons and he does delicate work with small objects(coloring models for modeled fights from the Roman and Greek era and shit he's crazy about history and works with archeological findings from the bronze age)
If he can do that as an hobby and not fuck shit up everyone who's patient and has a brain can solder.
But people nowadays(27~ and below) usually do not have both of these...

>But people nowadays(27~ and below) usually do not have both of these...
>tfw 28
seems I dodged a bullet there, thanks menopause

Enjoy your brain damage from breathing lead fumes. In fact you seem to be already enjoying it.

>brain damage from breathing lead fumes
>breathing lead fumes.
No, it's from the mercury and incest, dumbass
Geez, it's like you just make stuff up to try and piss people off.

The boiling point of lead is 1749 degrees C

As long as you're not retarded your solder stays below the melting point of lead so there should be no lead vapor exposure.

T. Angry boomer

Liquids still vaporize at temperatures under their boiling point, look at fog over a lake in the morning.
If you use a solder fume extractor and keep your temps reasonably low then the lead doesn't get high enough temperature to have any significant vapor pressure. The primary health problem with solder fumes is carcinogenic and toxic flux fumes, but flux is not neurotoxic.

Also lead-free solder often has antimony, which is also neurotoxic. I'm considering switching over though because I'm nervous about doing anything with something accumulatively neurotoxic.

But I just repaired an old yoga 2 tablet.
