actually, there was a scene for this a few years ago, before the netflix boom. that's when i stopped checking.
basically some really really obscure forums here talked about this stuff. it was extremely hard to find it because they had specific terms for everything. i remember that "is it working" or "is working" had to be written as "flowers are on the fields". they had a (JPG) glossary of decoder models. external URLs had to be converted to base64 and put into an image (and then you had to type it manually onto your browser's address bar).
i ended up never doing it because of how much of a chore it felt to use those forums, but i lurked for a while. even getting an invite there was a whole ordeal.
the tldr is: it exists/existed, you could get access to *any* sat-based channel, even from multiple companies at a time, at the highest quality offered by them, and all PPV channels were unlocked too. the catch is that it was expensive to do it, you'd have to keep updating your software because the companies were actively trying to fix the vulnerabilities and it was very dangerous. the sat/cable companies had law enforcement working overtime looking for people who did it.

Sadly HDTV is still the best quality source for a lot of stuff I watch, like sport, dramas, comedies and documentaries that never find their way onto Bluray. Mostly from BBC/ITV/Channel 4.
