Unironically the first C compiler was probably written in B (a now forgotten programming language). That compiler was then used to compile a compiler written in C. Now better and better compilers are constantly compiled with their previous versions

The first assembler would have been written in machine code.
The first compiler would have been written in assembly.
Compilers after that are written in other languages and eventually rewritten in their own language so they can compile themselves (see compiler bootstrapping).
Every compiler today relies on a long chain of compilers compiling compilers going back to the first compiler written in assembly.
