Problems in the US are deep seated, most issues are rooted in other, larger problems that nobody wants to address.

The US is too big for the type of government it relies on. It's creaking under its own weight. the infrastructure is aging and no one wants to spend the money to update it. The government can't get anything done because the various regions of the country are on different ends of the political spectrum and hamstring each other's plans constantly. The states have too much power to subvert the federal government too. If they abolished state power and ruled directly, they could cut a lot of the fat and increase the GDP considerably, but they won't ever consider it.

The west coast is running out of water because we thought it was smart to build massive cities in the desert and set up almond plantations in a dry environment despite them being one of the most water hungry crops. Nobody wants to build the several desalination plants necessary for the survival of the region. The Northeast should just break off and be its own country, they are basically carrying the whole US on their backs. The Midwest is dead weight, unless the government seizes control of food production directly. California is large enough to be a country by itself, but it acts like the spoiled grandchild of the federal government, making retarded decisions and relying on Silicon Valley too heavily. The Southeast is littered with backward retards and retired folks who can't keep up with modern ideas.
