What does Jow Forums think of Philip Hue? Have you tried it?
I'm anticipating a bunch of comments about the cost and that it is a botnet.

Kill yourself.
Yeah I stupidly bought that overpriced shit.
Anyway controlling lights from anywhere and assistant integration is sweet.
Now the light comes on when I get home owo
You like the features but feel Philips is overpriced compared to other options? Or just don't think the features are worth it for the price?
I know there are several other 'smart' lights that cost half as much as hue and does the exact same thing.
Don't ask me to name them but a quick google search will do. No need to overpay for something when you can get it cheaper with the same features
Gee, I can't wait for my light bulb to become botnet!
I use the hue, primarily for color lighting affects. Currently running 8 white bulbs, 10 colored bulbs, and 3 color strips.
It works for what I want. We'll see how well it plays with OpenHAB...
just pay half and get a chinaman version

I'm building an aquarium light controlled by pic related running FreeRTOS. I control it through MQTT over WiFi.
>Philips
this shit ain't gonna get into my house
>I control it through MQTT over WiFi
only few people will understand this
I honestly don't see a use for them.
"Yay, the lights turn on when I enter the house!" - someone whose arms are so atrophied he can't hit a fucking light switch. As for the colors, if I wanted to run a bordello, I'd just buy some red light bulbs, though I never had any desire to have colored light in the house.

Just slap Home Assistant on a Pi or something and run this shit locally. There is even a zigbee to MQTT bridge so cheap Xiaomi shit won't send your data to the chink data-jew. If you do smarthome shenanigans then do it with open source software.
Couple things that are cool (not saying you can't do this with other systems):
- On Friday my cleaning lady comes at 8:30, the lights automatically turn on to a white bright light throughout the house instead of my normal warm white or colored
- When my security camera detects something it'll turn on the lights in my living room and office, like someone is home
- I haven't messed with the integrations yet, but I'm pretty sure you can get them to work easily with Harmony and stuff like that.
-Scenes: One button and every light can go to a certain setting (this can be done with Lutron and stuff like that, but at a much higher cost).
Some downsides:
-You are depending on a computer to turn your lights on and off, I certainly recommend some regular lights mixed through the house
-While you can use the wireless switches, you need to train people not to touch your regular wired switches because if you turn off a switched light, and then try to turn it on from the app - it won't turn on because it has no power. Hue does remember you last state when the power comes back on, but if the last state was "Off" then it will remain off. I'm a loner so that doesn't matter, but my coworker sometimes has problems with his retarded wife not figuring that out.
I'm putting some in my house, I can't wait to have them dance with the music.
so how did he come out of that? any injuries?
iot is an invitation to get spied on and hacked. Use a normal lightbulb, how hard is it to get up and turn it off?
I got 8 of them for Christmas, I already had an echo which gathered dust. Now I can turn everything on or off remotely or specific rooms before I’m even there.
The hue is just what is most supported, I’m sure you could find cheaper ones but I won’t trade these in because I know that they work with most devices, while I’m not sure about the others.
Turning on the light during motion sounds fucking neat. I need to get that set up. Thanks user
Yeah I use Nest cams with Hues lighting. I have outdoor lighting but when the cameras that don't face the street detect motion then I have some lights turn on. I don't have it set for the front camera because there is too much activity with people walking their dogs and stuff.
Here is how to do it:
