Just looking at wallet it did remind me that I had $2.6k worth of it at the height of the bubble and now I'm left with basically nothing.

I also managed to fuck up transaction fee, was set way too low by default and queue only started to grow on top of my transaction, would have waited for days to clear. Learned about CPFP, did another transaction but again fucked it up because fee is now split upon two transaction so had to do it for third time with 3x amount of fee and it finally cleared.

running a little program called rsync once a month could have saved you from all this

so you got a lesson. now here's some tips on how you can learn from it,

buy 3 external HDDs fitting the amount of data you value.

backup monthly and rotate the drives and keep them not in your home while not in use

if your system is compromised and your backup is screwed and you find out a week later then you're fine. if one of the backup HDDs fail you're also fine.

it does involve manual labor, so there is a downside, you have to do something once every month. there's also an upside, it would take a lot to put you in a situation where you have no working backup.

it's typically not very sneaky. you get infected, it starts encrypting your files on every drive and share it can access and then you get a random demand on your screen. it's not like the good old ms-dos viruses who didn't do much at all beyond trying to spread, you could have one of those for years and you wouldn't notice.

Had the same situation at company where I worked. Some ancient software requires open shares to function, someone got email with invoice.exe or something similar and was so determined to open it that it clicked through multiple layers of confirmations.

First option was restoring 3 days old backup and having to deal with setting up ancient crapware importing all certificates from usb keys and fine tuning it to working state over couple of day or waste other peoples $300, pocket a little BTC overhead and browse chans.
