Because India is a HUGE market (second largest in the world) and they can't sell iPhones in India unless they manufacture them there as India has repeatedly denied Apple's request to be allowed to import refurbished phones (India may be the second largest market, but poojeets don't spend as much on phones so applel can only get away with selling the SE, 6 and 6S) so the only way to sell the models that poojeets can actually afford, Apple has begun manufacturing NEW iPhone SE, 6 and 6s models in India.

Yes and no. The reason they need to be manufactured there has nothing to do with national pride. Indians will only buy phones in the price range of the 6, 6S and SE but they refuse to allow Apple to import them because they don't want India to become a dumping ground for shitty refurbs. The only way Apple can sell the models that Indians will actually buy is to make them in India, so that's what they're doing. Global capital is starting to wake up to the fact that they're never going to get 1000% of their investments back from investing in China. Not only did the Chinese government give many businesses sweetheart deals to come and set up there and then turn around and steal decades worth of R&D with the tired refrane "We don't recognize international copyright law" but then they ended up undercutting a lot of those businesses with domestic manufacturing (Built on the stolen R&D) and the workforce there is also making leaps and strides towards better wealth distribution and stronger unions, usually at the expense of foreign capital. In essence, China took all of that investment money, turned around and invested it in China, and now they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Of course the Chinese market may collapse when all of the big corporate money pulls out and tries to use India as its source of cheap labor and regulation shirking, or they may just take their place as another has-been first world market and slide into the tertiary economy with the rest of us.

Bear in mind, though, that this isn't really going to make India a superpower. Just a temporary source of cheap labor and shitty consumer goods until their workforce starts demanding humane conditions and the market moves on and lifts up Ukraine or Poland or Central Africa or some other shithole.

why is this a question that needs to be asked? As the world becomes more connected there are less and less "new" markets to cater to and currently China and India are the big ones. Once those are well integrated, there's only Africa left and we'll start to see a plateau in profit for most companies unless they start actually innovating.

India's "make in india" policy doesn't slap any manufacturer with hefty, ridiculous tax if they decided not to make any components in india. Manufacturers interested to produce components in india mainly to avoid tariff and to take advantage of incentives such as tax holiday and such.
