One big problem with running any kind of service, including one focused on allowing free speech, is that there are laws that you have to abide by. You can want to allow lewd drawings of children all you want but that won't benefit your users if cops show up and run off with your servers. The same could apply to protecting the identify of someone who wrote something critical about the government immigration policy, and that really is a problem here in Sweden - see picture related about at 78 old woman being arrested and fined for writing something "bad" on Facebook. You may want to protect such users but refusing to hand over their data won't help them much if they show up and grab every piece of electronics you have the next day.

This is a pretty difficult subject and it's hard to appreciate how difficult until you've had some experience. I used to run a pretty popular free blog service. I don't anymore; I just can't unless I move to another country OR do censor left and right and regularly hand over user data for vague and unjustified reasons.

My basic point was this: As a provider of any kind of service you're faced with the choice of following the applicable laws or having your service shut down by force -- and the third option is to stop providing the service.

Something being legal in the US doesn't help much unless I move there (just hosting your content on servers there doesn't really help).

This plays out a bit differently for big corporations like Google, Facebook and so on, they can keep operating but they wouldn't be able to sell advertisements in certain countries. I am not defending censorship (or the handing over of user data), I'm just pointing out that this is a really difficult subject.
