you haven't said what resolution, framerate or games you were targetting. If you don't play games often and just want something for Overwatch or CSGO then anything is fine.

I play a bit of GTA and Overwatch
60 fps is fine

580 and undervolt. it needs it. if you're a brainlet get nvidia.

Overwatch will be perfect, I play it on my 1060 at 1440p and 120fps. GTAV I only tested at 1080p but it was pretty much 60fps with most settings maxed, 2560 means more pixels though so you might need to dial down population density and post-processing to keep constant 60fps in ultrawide. I'd say go for the 1060 or the 580, it doesn't make much sense "future proofing" when you're barely going to use it and you want to play old and easy to run games.

1070 is a better deal performance wise. Fairly huge leap from a 1060 and you will probably want it if you ever upgrade your monitor.

There are £270 1070tis out there

But in seriousness find an off hand 1070, warranty should transfer as it follows the product not the person. 1070 give or take is 30% better than a 1060 and used ones can be found at then buying a new 1060 prices on ebay.

Or the rx570 when you don't play games much. Price are very low even when new.

RX 580 hands down if you're using Linux. The AMD GPU stack is miles ahead of Novidya's.

I'm in the same boat, OP. I can say for AMD cards, every card from GCNv1 (HD7000) is able to drive at least one monitor in 4K. If you do play some simple games, like, for example, Don't Starve, get any card with a DisplayPort and a 6-pin power connector. That's probably it, also getting some more VRAM helps, I have HD6930 (2011) and it struggles to run GTA V, loads textures all the time.

Wouldn't a vega 64 be better in terms of future proofing though? I know it can't handle AA well but can't that change with driver updates?
just get the rtx 2060 if you're poor, it has all the features of the future and enough performance to last you 10 years

Lots of capitulating memecoin miners unloading their charcoal on the market, be careful

Not him, but I got myself a Vega 64 because of the open source drivers on linux.
The Vega64 itself is imo really good, especially if you got it at MSRP. The only issue I see atm is that the drivers aren't at their full potential yet, though that should improve over time. It's currently the best choice if you want a no-fuss GPU that just works (anything recent from amd, that is). NVidia is becoming a meme on Linux. They use to be the only choice, but now that AMD is picking up slack, and especially that the drivers are open source, they're substandard compared to AMD. WINE/Proton compatibility with the open source divers (if your card could use them) have always been exceptionally good.

How bad is the performance hit when you go from no AA to 8X MSAA?
