THAT SAID, trannies only make sense for a very specific setting and time period in which the risk factors are commonplace and it's considered taboo to suppress any of said risk factors. The risk factors are generally societal problems, and can include but are not limited to, blatant preferential treatment of women, improper hormone levels on a geographic scale, easy access to porn (in men, porn activates mirror neurons, causing autogynephilia, especially lesbian porn), hyper-vigilant bloodthirsty lawyers who are quick to jump on anything that looks like discrimination by "gender identity and expression" and laws that empower them to do this (this creates the taboo by forcing corporations to forbid their employees from ever say anything they could be sued for), some kind of massive dissatisfaction with your current life, personal hormone issues, and genetic risk factors.
Early adolescents have an additional much more influential (but usually only temporary) risk factor, which is anxiety over the changes occurring in their body, which many young people experience, but an increasing number are led to misinterpret.
I don't know the relative influence of these risk factors but I do know they weren't present the way they are until recently, and medicine hasn't yet adequately addressed the condition one way or another.
What this means for the story is that, when set in the past, you won't find trannies, because they weren't around the way they are now. And when set in the future, all treatments for the medical condition of transexualism can be assumed to be much more effective, either in preventing it, or in "affirming one's true identity", so "visible representation of trans people" isn't important. Only for stories set in the present can he meaningfully bitch about that.
