There's nothing wrong with capitalism

It alienates the working class
It is inheirently exploitive because it makes people work more than their fair share for surplus value.
It is extremely inefficient in distributing wealth, we have more houses than homeless people in the us and the food we waste 1/3 could feed every starving person in the world 12.9%
The economy crashes frequently due to predatory businesses strategies and automation.
It automates jobs but still makes everyone do the same amount of labour
Tons of science is held back due to profit motives (global warming , the effects of lead poisoning , ect)
It's literally based on the assumption that if everyone acts greedy then the world will be better off

You asked for problems so I listed them out. Capitalism in general works pretty well (at least for me as a rich white male) but that doesn't mean there could be a better state of affairs, or that it is immune to criticism.

I don't think telling people to try harder really solves the issue. If we don't have to live in a society where we have to compete for everything, then I think we shouldn't. You're looking at it from an individualistic perspective . Which tends to obscure systemic issues. Also I don't believe in that idea. When you aquire power you have to depend on others to maintain it. So the people giving you power have some control over you. You can end up doing things that just maintain your power instead of making a difference in the world. Tons of people who have made a difference in the world didn't try to aquire power and died impoverished or got killed because of their ideas (Karl Marx, William Tesla , Albert Einstein, Jesus Christ, prince Siddhartha ,ect).
