To be fair, GNOME 3 isn't that bad. Except for the stuttering and no desktop icons. In fact, I prefer their standard task switcher instead of dash-to-dock.

I've been asking myself this question as well. Since GNOME 3, it really isn't suited to be the default DE of any distribution.

I regularly use TDE, CDE, and MaXX. TDE gets used to develop and test Qt programs, while MaXX is used as my main DE for developing Motif programs. I use CDE to make sure that all of my wigets work with standard Motif (since SGI enhanced widgets are slightly different).
