All my harddrives are formatted for Linux filesystems and encryption schemes, switching to BSD would require to format everything.

Here's the kicker: there is none. The whole bluetooth specification is a clusterfuck. I imagine having to work on BlueZ (or any other userland bluetooth drivers) has it's own section on the suicide help line. You can literally smell the fish the people have been smoking when they made the specifications when you're forced to read their horrible excuse of documentation. It can be interpreted differently, so noncompatibility is basically part of the design. If you connect two embedded bluetooth radios of the same manufacturer it works. switch one to another manufacturer and a few things stop working. now add another interpretation of the guy who used this embedded controller and wrote a userland driver for it and the disaster unfolds.

Do you even know how much it costs to add BLE functioniality to an embedded product? Fucking 10,000$ just because license fuck you.

And to prove my point: every platform with a bluetooth implementation has it's way of doing this. And they all have their own documentation, too. The only common thing is that they all (Android, Microsoft, BlueZ, Mac/iOS) rewrite the documentation for their developers/userbase.

So the only thing in common is that every platform has it's own abstract way of handling bluetooth. Non-compatibility by design.

OpenBSD in particular is simply too slow and doesn't have enough hardware support.
I understand that its slower performance is justified by its increased security policy, but still, I don't see a reason to use it over Linux on a production machine or a daily driver.
I'd probably consider using it on a server or a router, where top-notch performance isn't required, but maximum security is.
The other BSDs don't seem worth discussing.
