It seems being a laptop manufacturer is a crossroads. If you make durable aesthetic laptops people won't have to upgrade but if you make a flimsy easily breakable aesthetic expensive laptops then people will upgrade? What gives?

They'll probably just offer an extended warranty period for like 6 months that you have to sign up for.
Nah, Apple will blame it on user error to delay having to do something about it.
When a new model has been out for over a year they will finally agree to replace it but only if you bought one less than a year before that date (ie: impossible unless you bought some old stock). That's what Apple always does.
When you have shitty consumer protection laws, this is what you get. There should be a reasonable expectation of how long a product should last, like how it is here over in Kangaroo Land.

I'm just going to put out there that Apple was well aware of the potential issue before they even shipped the first device with this ribbon cable. Once the inevitable class-action lawsuit hits the internal docs will come out just like they did for the iPhone 6 with bendgate (and then touch disease). Part of the problem with Apple, possibly in particular, is that they've clearly made this design decision around the screens before fully testing it so that once it becomes obvious there's an issue it's already too late and so they just push it out knowing that they'll sell millions, they'll make billions and that they can absorb the warranty and lawsuit costs.

Isn't there something of a proverb or saying about a merchant who sold the same item to someone over and over? That's basically tech companies are trying to achieve. They're trying to make technology items, CONSUMABLE items. They're working very hard to convince people to upgrade to the new item when it comes out, even if it's pretty much just a cosmetic sidegrade.
And it's working. People have fallen for the consumerist trap.
