Who the fuck actually gets an IT person to fix a problem? Like if I couldn't do something they would probably be just installing fresh OS and saying "yeah so keep backup next time" or doing the old terminal change password trick (if not encrypted).

I left IT work to go work in a machine shop specifically because my job wanted me to either install windows, accounting, and inventory software on gazillions of deployed machines or work a helpdesk.

Majority of people need "IT professionals" to do the most basic tasks, so it's really like hiring Gordon to spread your butter on a bread. Most of them, like my parents, just straight up refuse to read whatever it says and learn and memorize any pictograms. To be honest, those are entirely different.

Basic computer maintenance has gotten easier with time (hardware not necessarily so), whereas car maintenance is harder. Something as easy as replacing a battery can be a nightmare depending on the car model.

That and being a resourceful man was expected male behavior by society, although lazy manchildren will have their feefees hurt if the media were honest to show that women still like a man that gets shit done.

People are naturally lazy about having to learn something they don't have a particularly deep interest in.
For most people a computer is just a tool and nothing more than that.
It's the same with people who are good with computers and have a deep interest in it, they might not know the intricacies of fixing their car or washing machine other than the bare basics (like updating your anti-virus on a pc) because it's just a tool for them and nothing more.

What. If you have half a brain you could understand that some IT skills are impossible to learn in 10 minutes. Let alone 1 year. For application administration you need to know the middleware, now how to use ansible, learn sql to query the database. Learn how to install the middleware and create and manage certificates. Learn how to install a web server and configure it. Learn to talk to the whole team, developers, scrum masters, product owners etc. Learn how LDAP works, both in AD and openLDAP. That all is just the tip of the iceberg. You need in depth knowledge of all of it, including the operating system.
