I was throwing up getting a new laptop for uni, atm I've got this garbage old laptop running on a m5 and 4 gigs of ram, it takes a minute just to open chrome.
I was looking at either getting myself a Surface Laptop 2 or a new Macbook Air. I'm not one to jizz over macOS, but they both seem like solid choices.

what exactly will you be using your laptop for? Do you have another computer or will this be your only one?
Why not just get a regular laptop with a touch screen?? Fuck paying that much especially of you going to uni.
I have a Desktop PC that's pretty capable, but I need something for classes.
Mainly using it for note-taking, Microsoft Office, some adobe stuff etc etc

there's no reason to pay $1000+ for a laptop if all you're going to be doing is writing shit in word and doing some light web browsing. Go find an old upgraded thinkpad in mint condition and you'll be good.

basically you need something to browse and take notes.
i like the xps and for your use case id get something with an i5, 8gb ram, 128+ ssd. lot of stuff fits the bill. what youre basically deciding on is packaging and battery capacity.
this is a newegg list for what i'd pick out. dunno if it works for aus. you could spend 1k us and thats overkill still for what youre doing.
My parents are paying for it. If I have the money to spend, why not spend it?
I've seen some thermal throttling stuff on the xps 15, but with what I'm doing it shouldn't be a problem, right?

macbook if you can afford it (if you can't don't bother it's not that great)
otherwise get the surfacebook or anyother ultrabook or something thin and light
if youre taking notes and surfing the web i highly doubt you'll encounter thermal throttling.
if youre using this for engineering or anything maybe, and if so you should have said so before.
hes right but if this is for school i wouldnt do secondhand, get something for 1k that will last and you can get a secondhand as a backup or whatever.

My guy, dude is only going to be use it for note taking. I would recommend a fucking tablet. Has office, note taking, and photo editing. So spoiled
I'm using it for Photoshop and Premiere Pro as well. I don't know many tablets that can handle that well.

Get the surface book tablet / keyboard combo I use a thinkpad 2 in 1 for note taking but think the surface book would be a better choice

My x200 went through my masters and phd assuming it will last at least another 6 months.
The only limitation I get from it is when it comes to meme learning because training on c2d takes forever beyond toy models. But if you were in the market for some machine that can run cuda, you wouldn't loot at surfaces or macbook air anyway.
