Patents are infinite you fuck. It's the corporations who have abused the system, like they abuse everything, through lobbying that has allowed patent trolling to occur.
Patents help inventors protect their inventions from theft and competition and allow them to create competent businesses with their inventions.
That's the whole point of it.
The patent holder is granted a limited monopoly in exchange for making the information public.

the incentive is what they will do with its new technology, patent only prevents other from making things that do the same thing. that is incentive, its monopolization. and monopoly remove incentive for creativity and any improvement at all.
i was going to say this:
"if you created this transistor node you make money by making it and selling it. the patent only works to prevent other people from competing with you by making the same transistor at a cheaper price or improving in the design." but then i read the rest of you post and say
