Gentoo is more of a hobbyist distro so go for it if you want to configure and compile everything by yourself. I personally use it but it's not something I'd recommend as an actual recommendation to someone new to GNU/Linux. If you're just starting out use something like *ubuntu or mint because they "just werk".

To add on to this, GNU/Linux is not retard proof and is not going to protect you from your retardedness.
There is one really important thing you need to know:
Do not use commands you do not understand and never fucking ever paste stuff into the terminal unless you know exactly what you are pasting into the terminal and even then it's better to just type it out, your system will not protect you if you decide to blindly run 'sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M'.
If you don't know what a command does then read the fucking manual.

Don't worry so much about distribution, or even DE if you're planning to program in linux when you're starting out. The main thing you want to do is learn what tools are available to you through the command line. Familiarize yourself with things like gdb, git, some kind of shell(bash is good to start out) , and newer things like docker. Distro choice should be much clearer after you learn and get used to a cli-based workflow. Just start out with an easy to install distro like debian or ubuntu and branch out later.
