If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

GNU+Linux isnt an implementation of Marxism. Contributing to free software is voluntary, not forced.

What are you on about now, retard?
Levi Turner
He's just racking his brains for ways to insult people who value freedom.
Jackson Nelson
i use xubuntu, i like xfce4. i want to try other desktop environments but i know they probably fuck with one another and apt is not very reliable about removing everything installed as depends. what options do i have for trying out new shit? i specifically want to try gnome 3
Bentley Lewis
Better than Manjaro, but if you're asking for our input to begin with, you'll probably feel insecure when people tell you you were too dumb to install Arch.
To their credit, just install Arch.
Cooper Richardson
What is linux BluRay/4K BluRay support like? I'm thinking of replacing my 11 year old laptop to at least 1080p if not 4K. I've read the arch wiki and it seems like its supported but may be hit and miss due to DRM.
God damn Guix is fucking awesome. Just set up a server on an outdated as FUCK vps (which is still using kernel version 2) without even touching the default package manager. Just installed the binary Guix manually, copied over some of my own custom package definitions and everything fucking works.
I’m using Ubuntu and I can’t figure how to connect to my schools wifi I need to give it a username/password but it just hangs there someone please help meeeeeee

I got a new Thinkpad and I'm considering installing GuixSD, does anyone have any experience running it on a desktop?
Henry Robinson
>stupid fucking commies that can't read a history book think this lel

I'm mostly concerned about security issues, instability, usability, broken packages and updates, and stuff like that. I don't give a fuck about the arch meme.
Levi Adams
>two geeks in one thread Nice to see other distros start to catch on. t. Void user

its not a success as it is stagering inovation as much as proprietary software. people cant make money with it as they cant sell the software because someone will always give it for free. so nobody join the development. you think its succesful because you dont know how much better it would be if you could sell it as a proprietary software. they would probably have already outsold microsoft and appel combined
Sebastian Sanders
I'm this user and yes, I have experience running guixsd on a desktop and a laptop, and now also experience using guix on a remote vps as well.
Camden Lopez
80 fuckin minutes and I couldn’t figure it out Maybe I’m not cut out for Loonix
Ian Barnes
why did they name unix that when it sounds so much like eunuchs
Jordan Ward
did you try changing the auth method? maybe check the on campus IT page for info if you can't figure it out.
Jackson Taylor
good thing GNU is not Unix
Jayden Jackson
Have you connected to the wifi though? I don't completely understand what you're saying, but it sounds like your school has one of those dumb systems where the wifi is completely unsecure allowing anyone to connect but then it blocks you from accessing the web until you open a browser and allow it redirect you to their login page. Is that right? If so try opening a browser and going to some random web page to see if you can trigger it.
Evan Price
Just updated to Linux Mint 19.1 last night and I love it. UI looks awesome but maybe it's just because the text is huge and my eyes are failing.
Anyone got any recommendations for how to sync KeePassX databases between my two computers automatically? Ideally through someone else's servers like Google Drive. I looked into sourceforge.net/p/kp-googlesync/support/Getting Started/ but it's for KeePass, not KeePassX, and it's got limited compatibility with Linux.
Jeremiah Edwards
yeah i tried that, i tried all of them campus site is no help no, i havent established a connection to the wifi credentials are required to connect (username/password), so you'd think youd just try to connect, then then something would come up asking for those credentials, but it just hangs there trying to connect if i try to manually configure the shit and set the auth method + other stuff, and manually give it my credentials, it still just hangs there
Kayden Russell
It should automatically detect the auth method. If you have the method wrong then that's probably why it won't connect.
Liam Gomez
Also, this probably won't make a difference, but just in case, you can try running "sudo rfkill unblock all" to automatically clear anything blocking wifi, including any hardware switches (like enable/disable wifi buttons on the keyboard)
Ryder Ramirez
>It should automatically detect the auth method well, it doesnt, which sucks ill have to try that next time im on campus

Trying to install this Windows XP GTK theme for XFCE from here github.com/B00merang-Project/Windows-XP For some reason it isn't changing the theme of the XFCE panel. Pic related, anyone know what could be the problem?
I am literally stating exactly what stallman has done. >re bill gates and his family >re steve jobs death Stallman is not a man you should put faith in or trust
Landon Turner
>youre not allowed to install proprietary software on GNU/Linux ??????????????????????????????????
Jason Collins
Cool, is there good support for current releases of Gtk3 and Qt5 or will I be expected to make a bunch of ports? Not that there is anything wrong with that, but wondering if I should prepare for it
Carter King
Sure is RIAA in here.
Austin Diaz
I have no idea what XFCE is or does sorry.

Cant use filepicker in any browser. When ever i click to upload, it either 1. Hard locks up and have to force close. 2 Sits infinitely loading the folder.
I already checked smart and none of the drives are defective. I've tested them all with hdparm and they are all giving the proper write and read speed. What could cause this?
Xavier Jenkins
>NOT ALLOWED Your problem is a fundamental misunderstanding. You are fighting a strawman that you created yourself.

posting links to shit im not gonna read doesnt make what you said any more correct/less retarded

Why do you keep following a thread you're not interested in with topics you hate and make you feel bad?
Liam Hernandez
is all debian mirrors down? i tried using different mirrors and APT seems like unable to connect to them pinging from different devices report that the mirror links are not resolvable is this related to the testing freeze or i have shitty internet? pinging other sites (e.g. www.google.com) shows that the internet is pretty fast
Jason Howard
Try restarting the panel?
Joshua Edwards
its on the HOLY DOMAIN stallman.org You should be fine reading your prophets scripture This thread was Friendly Linux Thread, you then hostilely took it over. I run Linux I DO NOT run gnu You can use Linux and other userlands, that is what this thread is for. The common factor is using Linux, not necessarily gnu I will never leave
Zachary Reyes

>is all debian mirrors down? Without even checking, I can be sure that the answer is no. But just for you, I checked by updating my Debian install. No, they're not down.

Ayden Cruz
>Issue: please revert the bugfix, I've built my entire ecosystem based on it
Mason Nguyen
>im not going to read stallmans literal quotes from his own self hosted and verified domain Yeah ok kid. Get proven wrong, you did
GNU/FSF & Stallman are about religious persecution and devotion, not technical superiority, which is what FOSS and Linus support. Stallman would rather hate someone he has never met and with his literal death, all for THINKING differently then him. This is not a man i want to follow or support. Furthermore, stallman and the FSF claim "You dont need money to make software". Yet stallman and his staff all take in over 100k a year in donations to their personal wallet. How is that creating software without money?
Brayden Scott
weird i tried pinging different mirrors and ping reported that all of them are not resolvable but mirror sites show that all of them are working but it does not seems to be hardware issue i encountered this issue on a virtualbox install, but ping results of other sites shows that its networking is functional
Samuel Richardson
i literally dont even know who tf stallman is you mongoloid
Connor Myers
I have a Kubuntu install with no grub and an empty /boot folder. How do I set up grub for it from a live cd? I want it to boot in uefi.
Bentley Bennett
That sounds like an alternative reality, senpai.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
Brody Jackson
That's P2P though. I want it to go into the cloud so I don't have both computers on at once.
Cameron Wood
Go to his literal website why do you have a problem going to stallman's website? Do you not want to prove me wrong? Do you jut want to perpetuate bullshit with all of your posts instead of having a link to post and prove me wrong? I dont get it
Angel Davis
the only shit you posted was weird paedophile shit
Jace Torres
I don't know how keepass(x) works, but assuming you already know which files you need to sync then you should be able to make it work with any "cloud" service you want.
For example, if your "cloud" service only syncs a single folder you can move the keypass files into it and then replace them with symlinks. That way any and all changes will follow the symlinks into the sync directory.

>Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died. >As Chicago Mayor Harold Washington said of the corrupt former Mayor Daley, "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone." Nobody deserves to have to die - not Jobs, not Mr. Bill, not even people guilty of bigger evils than theirs. But we all deserve the end of Jobs' malign influence on people's computing. >Unfortunately, that influence continues despite his absence. We can only hope his successors, as they attempt to carry on his legacy, will be less effective. brb switching all my copyrights to copylefts
Hunter Rodriguez
user, I have no idea what you're talking about and I'm not whoever you may have been talking to before. I'm just saying half the shit in your post if fucking garbage
Stallman does NOT think you HAVE to use free software. His goal is to make it so the only proprietary software you're using is something you're aware of and that you chose to use it. He supports you using proprietary software if that's what you want to do. Get your facts straight before you get so butthurt
John Jackson
Fuck yeah, Geany is cool. I got tired of the horrible lag caused by using a web browser to edit text files and I decided to give it a try. It's sanic fast. For now, I'll be using Geany for Python and vim for config files.
This is the end of my blog post. I wrote it here because I have no friends to talk about this. Don't forget to subscribe to my RSS.

>I run Linux I DO NOT run gnu Android is nonfree software. If you want to make a "Linux" thread where you talk about all the things that GNU and Android have in common (which is very little) then go do that.
>Furthermore, stallman and the FSF claim "You dont need money to make software". Where the fuck did you get this idea, he has been panhandling since the 80s when he was selling Emacs.
>Yet stallman and his staff all take in over 100k a year in donations RMS takes $0 salary from the FSF.
Noah White
Socialism works in free software because no money is involved.
Kayden Gomez
it's a capitalist country. it's certainly not socialism or feudalism that's giving people no choice but to work in shitty working conditions for shitty wages 7 days a week.
