Fuck yes.
If that comes out for around 100-200$ and the reviews are decent, then I'm in.
Might actually also start developing software for phones / modifying existing software to run decently on them (GUI wise).
It's shit, but at least it's cheap.
That was the motto of linux until not so far ago
>already payed for librem
Why? I'm buying both nigger.
based
Linux maybe, but hardware always had the "open source" tax for offering open source.
>Dead on arrival specs
>no keyboard
No thanks
What do people do on their phones that requires latest high-end hardware?
This
I hope the cameras, GPS, Bluetooth and SIM slot are removable.
The only thing wrong with it is the lack of RAM. 4GB would be ideal. But if you just use it for communication then even 2GB can be fine.
What the hell did you want? A high end linux phone for cheap? Which company is going to take the risk of something like that?
Also, without the android bloat the specs are more than reasonable
>KDE and unity 8
>No foot in sight
Yesssssss
Im pretty confident the foot is what killed the librem, they have been dragging linux down for a decade now
what's the point of having phone without SIM?
Is it pointless to preorder it now? Its 649 petrodollars.
I don't use SIM cards because they're useless and spyware. The better question is what's the point of SIM cards in 2019?
Calling? Mobile data?
>720p
I'll really need to think about it
Give your mom a call user, she misses you
>calling
IM
>mobile data
Why would you waste your battery on this shit when you have WiFi? Even if you live in a village without city-wide free WiFi you can buy a 4G router.
We use an instant messenger.
It's a cellphone
>cellphone
>Fully fledged Linux distro
Pick one.
In that case the fact that it's only got a touchscreen for input should be a bigger concern. Imagine something like an up-to-date HTC Dream running Debian, now that I'd consider.
>no hardware switch between baseband and cpu
>no hardware switch to disable microphone and camera
into the trash
But I don't have wifi, user. I don't even have cable. All of my internet usage is through my phone thanks to unlimited 4g.
>fact that it's only got a touchscreen for input should be a bigger concern
Why?
Touchscreen with swipe-capable keyboard is way better than tiny physical shit-keyboard that you can at max use with 2 fingers.
Plus, physical keyboard are only OK if you only use qwerty and write in 1 language.
>Touchscreen with swipe-capable keyboard is way better than tiny physical shit-keyboard that you can at max use with 2 fingers.
I disagree wholeheartedly. Not to mention your only cursor control is your sausage finger. I'll take a trackball over that any day.
>Plus, physical keyboard are only OK if you only use qwerty and write in 1 language.
Learn to touchtype.
I don't think I'll switch away from my Sailfish phone but I'm glad people are still trying to make less shitty mobile OSs.
>Learn to touchtype.
>On a tiny keabord
I don't have myself enough.
I can swipe my colemak Gboard without looking.
>sausage finger.
Maybe you should eat less junk food?
Then buy a 4G router
>I can swipe my colemak Gboard without looking
>I don't have myself enough
Looks like you've still got a ways to go
>Maybe you should eat less junk food?
Nah I'm good, if anything I should be gaining weight. I was assuming you had sausage fingers since you were bitching about phone keyboards
>Looks like you've still got a ways to go
Sure I do.
But that's autocorrect for you. This time I was looking.
>Bitching
I was giving objective remarks about inferiority of particular technology, such as fixed layout, fixed size, fixed places, tiny buttons that don't allow you to use 10 fingers and so on.
>But that's autocorrect for you
Yet another reason physical keyboards are better. Autocorrect's a crutch for touchscreen keyboards.
the bench mark test that matters is
>can it play RuneScape
>>and well
>Yet another reason physical keyboards are better
You do know that Android auto corrects physical input too, right?
>implying I'd use Android
You know Android has a checkbox to disable it, right?
>You know Android has a checkbox to disable it, right?
Same for "virtual" input if you so wish. What's your point?
Option to autocorrect what you type doesn't alleviate any of the physical keyboard's problems.
>Same for "virtual" input if you so wish
Try it, see how that goes.
> What's your point?
It's unnecessary with physical keyboards. Avoids shit like posting "I don't have yourself"
can i run kde on my pixel 3
>Avoids shit like posting "I don't have yourself"
Oh, the irony.
Also, how does it help to avoid such mistakes?
Once again, it's same tiny shit (just wore and fixed) and not a proper keyboard.
>Oh, the irony.
That wasn't a typo, I decided to quote what you said after I had a different sentence typed and simply forgot to change a pronoun to match.
>Also, how does it help to avoid such mistakes?
Unlike the slab of glass you use as a keyboard, I can feel when I mistype.
Those use SIM cards, don't they?
>cares for privacy
>uses "free" Wi-Fi
Maybe user's advice is not so sound after all.
Sounds ok, 5mp camera idk as long as it has led flash maybe.
I think is a perfect device to make the ball start rolling.
Experience has shown that the low price is essencial, and if gains even little traction KDE mobile and the rest of the stack will improve, making it easier for more premium devices in the future.
Usually no one wants to pay to be a beta tester, but for 150$ (and not 700 or 1300 as the alternatives are said to cost) some of us will buy this thing
It literally says in the article that they want to implement it you fucking illiterate chimp
Runescape runs like shit on android.
Physical keyboards on phones suck. More accurate? Sure. But a gigantic pain in the ass that isn't worth the benefit of preventing an occasional typo. I'm a skeleton with fingers that have been described as "alien like" skinny. Those buttons are too damn small.
Try a BlackBerry keyboard, you could type accurately with your big toes.
this isn't comparable to the Librem 5 at all. Librem 5 is as close to free as a smartphone will ever be. this pine thing has hardware switches, that's all. Librem 5 is specific open hardware that isn't easy to get and it's actually somewhat powerful.
You do realize there's a huge difference between using a portable unregistered router and putting a literal backdoor onto your phone?
>uses "free" Wi-Fi
Tor exists on android.
>using Tor as a general VPN
Enjoy that 200Kbps bandwidth
unless you want to stream 1080p video on your phone, 200Kbps is fine.
I don't need more when I'm in public because I don't have an attention span of a jelly fish and don't need to be glued onto a screen constantly. 200Kbps is enough to keep 10 messaging apps going.
>without the android bloat the specs are more than reasonable
THIS
android == java
java == virtual machine
virtual machine == inefficient always 100% of the time
without android you can run bare-metal apps, which can be up to 100x faster (particularly on small-chip CPUs)
>5 seconds to open a 1MB photo
>fine
>unironically ok with being blasted with media 24/7
found the bugman
someone post the if Jow Forums made a phone maymay
What the hell are you talking about?
It's more than that.
8x more in fact.
Shit you're right, I was thinking 200KBps
KB/s*
Otherwise it's Kb/s or Kbps.
I know, it's retarded, and I hate it.
Again, if you really NEED speed when on the go just use a 4G router.
If you don't give a shit about privacy then what the fuck are you doing in this conversation? Use public WiFi without a VPN or Tor, or infect your phone with a SIM card. I don't give a shit.
>just use the slow option if you need privacy
>just ignore options that don't bog your connection down to a fraction of what it could be
What kind of bloated applications do you run that need more than 2Gb of memory?
If an application have a memory leak, you fix it. You don't just add more ram so you restart it less often.
>Just use the free wifi
>linux users telling the rest of us we don't need anything at all because linux can't do it
What a joke
Isn't the point of ART to compile apps on first run?
what’s the issue with sim cards? is the problem not with the mobile radio having dma? which i assume these won’t.
I agree but this is "idea of a phone" not a phone, at that price it seems fine, basically wait and see. The librem phone kinda turned me off because at the price for what it is but mostly why are they advertising a native (why call it native) cryptocoin app as a feature of the phone, botnet.
What's your phone? Is Sailfish any good?
Yes, he doesn't know shit. And most demanding apps are written in C++ anyway.
I unironically think Unity will make a comeback.
make better infographics for your shit phone next time, retard
Oh, this is one of those projects that the guys that put it together thought "hey, if it costs me 100 dollars to produce then it could sell at 149 starting price". I'm expecting a final price of 300 dollars.
Web browsing is extremely slow on 2GB RAM even if you're limited to a single tab. 3GB RAM is fine, but I expect it to become unusable in 2 years as well.
how will I run arch on it if it doesn't have a keyboard?
They're right, I read your first comment and just assumed you didn't read anything because you're a negshill.
Why the crypto botnet in librem and does native mean it can't be uninstalled?
install gentoo
You computer screen doesn't have a keyboard either. Buy one and connect it with USB.
That's different, my monitor is stationary on a desk along with my keyboard
why does a browser need 2 fkn Gb ? it should need more like .2
JavaScript
Because a modern web browser is closer to a second OS than the document viewers of old.
>He doesn't tailor his suits to have a keyboard holder on the left arm
?
>new GNU/Laxative smartphone announced every year
>they're all shitty flops in the end
like pottery
Is the entire thing open source & open hardware? If not, it's shit and probably still tracking your ass and selling your information to China.
Do you have a single device with 2GB RAM? RPi 3B+ lags while browsing (which is roughly what Pine64 phone will perform like), Galaxy s5 also lags on most sites. JavaScript and endless media loading on shit pages make each tab need at least 200MB.
I just read the news on the website and apparently they are also working on a tablet $80 and a more powerful $200 laptop
The laptop looks promising. Hopefully they'll make a phone with same specs in future.
