120gb 20$
240gb 40$

Great, if you disregard the constantly bloating size of OS, software, games, ...

Nobody forces you to use bloat.

120gb is fine for me
my data is on my NAS and gaymes are for fags

You can't spare 20$ to install your windows, programs and maybe few games on a 120gb SSD?

It's not like if you need terabytes of space you need maximum speed that HDD can't give.

Attached: 7388aa3c.jpg (636x684, 61K)

This. You can even get a caching program like that one AMD sells, fuze or storemi or whatever, and just speed up the programs you use frequently

I bought a 1 tb for $95 a month ago

>can't afford ssd
>can afford games
Get your priorities right, user.

120GB is sufficient for non-professional use. My ssd has fit windows 7, debian, photoshop and all other programs, and one game.
Why would you install games on ssd anyway. The difference is noticabla, but why bother if you can't/don't want to buy larger drive? Civ V loading time wass reduced from ~2 min to 30sec is this really that important?

SSD are super cheap, you can get 240GB for like $40-50.

Meanwhile, an already bloated as fuck Linux distro with applications and so on uses 20GB or something.

And you got no real reason to put your 100TB porn collection on SSD, keep that on HDD - it's basically completely fine in terms of porn watching / sharing performance.

(cont'd)
I checked, my biggest install is 13.3GB on filesystem size, ~385k managed files + ~45k non-files, 1348 packages.

Completely bloated for a Linux install, lots of software that I rarely use or that I wanted to have a look at but forgot. binaries not compile-time optimized for size, no compression or especially optimized filesystem.

You basically don't even have to try to keep it small in any way at this point. The storage that you actually need for your OS and programs costs around $5 (too small to get an actual SSD AFAIK; you'd have to buy an USB stick). Its so ridiculously cheap.

remember the time I bought ocz agility 60gb for $130.
and now it's fucking cheap
even entry level 1tb nvme costs $130-170 now.

>QLC
Nice, finally an SSD less reliable than an HDD

>mfw you got Crucial MX500 500GB for £63.20 on African American Friday

Attached: FB_IMG_1548809578031.jpg (960x540, 26K)

>Name brand SSDs like Samsung 860 EVO and Crucial MX500 SSDs are as cheap as $130-$150 for a 1TB model

Fuck off out of here. I've been buying SSDs when they were still damn near $1.50 per GB. If you can't afford the $60-$70 for a good 500GB SSD, stop being poor.

>$95/TB
I can get refurb HDDs for under $20/TB

please, the term is "Friday of Color" now

>I can get super slow hard drives with a higher likelihood of failure for cheaper!
Good for you? No one buys SSDs for bulk storage.

when will 1TB SSDs reach the market? I've waited too long and I like lots of space justincase

Depends on what games you play. I play lots of shitty MMOs that need to load from the disk all the time, the difference is pretty noticeable, especially when one of my game installs is a goddamn 60GB behemoth of disk space.

>1TB SSDs?
What? They have up to 4TB models available now. 1TB models are mainstream enough for Samsung ones to only cost around $150.

There are lots of 1tb SSD's. What are you talking about?

Yeah, I was waiting for Samsung QVO, but at first they were more expensive than mx500s while being slower. Let's see if the prices stabilize in the next months.

even 4tb ssds are getting somewhat affordable now, 1tb is nothing

>He uses windows

I still have a 120GB Samsung 830 I have windows and utilities installed. But installing games on an SSD vs regular HDD is a HUGE difference. Some games can't even load fast enough off of an HDD. GTA5 is one of them. Slow loading textures, pop in, blurred renders, etc.

is there much point of increasing density after QLC? the diminishing gains from each step in density seem to not really make it worth it. plus the fact the speed drastically slows down for each layer you add. where do we go from here fellas?

I meant 10 TB SSDs
sorry for the confusion im sick with norovirus. Yesterday I slept for 17 hours straight and woke up vomitting. I'm kinda a quarter awake right now.

Yeah, but still. 10TB would cost $2000 at least. You could build a simple raid10 server if you need better IO.

>buying refurbished hard drives
You'll learn why this is a bad idea

If you can afford to play an MMO you can afford to buy an SSD you fucking whale

I got a 1tb 860 evo nvme for 150 how is that not affordable? I paid more for my 1st 1tb spinning rust drive.

I have 12 of them in a ZFS array and not one of them has failed in over two years. ZFS caught a few transient checksum errors, but you can get those in brand new drives too. I'd love for all my storage to be silent and low-power, but SSDs are still way too expensive right now.

Well I think Seagate made a professional/server use only 14TB SSD that's about the same size as a 3.5" HDD. Costs like $14,000 because it's extremely durable. If you're talking an "affordable" (i.e. sub $1,000) 10TB SSD, probably within the next 10 years if not less.

Why would anyone pay $8 for a burger when you can pay a dollar for instant ramen?

>higher likelihood of failure
>compared to QLC
Nice meme

>implying I'm the type of poorfag who would by QLC
Enjoy not only your spinning rust, but your USED spinning rust lol.

>constantly bloating
I've had two 40GB partitions that comfortably hold 64-bit versions of Win 7 on one and Win 10 on the other, which I set up years ago and use on a daily basis.
Learn to keep your programs/data on a separate partition from your OS, instead of spreading lies like a faggot.

Please retard tell me where to get a 14TB SSD for a normal price.

GTFO

>have to buy storage
>dont have to buy gaymens

I've seen some benchmark of qlc previously and shit looks awful, as soon it runs out of cache it's literally down to hdd speeds or slower, fucking worthless even as a storage drive because you can bet it won't be cheaper than a hdd.

>worse durability as they increase density
NOPE

I pirate my bidio gaymes like any sensible man.
fuck you hippie, I need a 1tb SSD for my games

>you can bet it won't be cheaper than a hdd
Do you really believe the storage Jew want you to have cheap storage?
Reminder that HDD prices never went back to normal after the tsunami in 2011. As of today the prices are still inflated.

I think you misunderstood my post. I'm saying I want my games on an SSD because lower load times actually matter to me.

they were affordable for quite some time, stop being poor

Until you need to stay current with your friends or be recognized at work.

>fuck you hippie, I need a 1tb SSD for my games
Why the fuck would I be a hippie? And yea, that much storage for mere games is absolutely ridiculous.

OTOH even that costs less than $200.

yikes

>And yea, that much storage for mere games is absolutely ridiculous.
Some game devs are kind of retarded.

Attached: 1538625985451.png (377x487, 19K)

So you constantly play 15 titles of over 50GB each?

No, PSO2 is obviously a stupidly obscene exception, and I'm not that user and don't own a 1TB SSD, but there are a lot of bloated crappy games out there, many of which I play. Its mainly an MMO thing, since most MMO devs, especially koreans, can't make games for shit.

>That much storage for mere games is absolutely ridiculous
Most games that get released now are easily in the 80-120GB range. I bought DOOM last christmas and havent been able to play it because its 80GB and I only have a 256gb SSD.

DOOM, all the new Wolfenstein games, MGSV, Hitman 2016 and Hitman 2018 are all 25-80GB

I believe that but I mentioned MMOs specifically because not only are they stupidly bloated but they also take advantage of SSDs really well because of stuff like having to load maps repeatedly.

Precisely, on top of which he's saying why would I buy a freshly made burger over minute noodles I poured cold water on last week. The fact that he personally can buy refurbished drives for that price neither indicates their market value nor that they are better value than SSDs

Those cost $100 or less near the end of last year. I bought one myself for $155 Dollarydoos

>120GB
>enough for anything

Why the fuck are you bent on using an SSD for storage? That's not what they're for you knuckle dragging mongoloid.

>no affordable SSD
>probably bitching about SSD's cost because he "needs" his uncompressed P.O.S data hungry gayms instead using the SSD for something actually productive
OP confirmed: 'Biggest Pleb'

Unsure why you bash HDDs as spinning rust when they're the only way to get a decent amount of storage. The average Jow Forums user has at least 1TiB of SSD storage and at least 20TiB of HDD storage with backups.

512 nvme is fine for windows plus 7 bloated tripple a games

>buy 240GB SSD for OS and important stuff
>buy 1TB HDD for the rest
Why is this so hard?

Attached: garfield.png (128x128, 22K)

use linux retard

More like:
>buy 500 GB m.2 NVME drive for OS and programs
>buy 1 TB SSD for torrents

you fucking shits complaining about ssd prices. my god I paid fucking 300 € (450 $ back then) back in 2010 for a fucking 128gb ssd with 250mb/s read and 100mb/s write.

stop whining you little shits.

A 1 TB Samsung SSD today costs the same as a 1 TB hard disk ten years ago and has 100-1000x the performance.
Fucking kids I swear.

i want ssds as storage drives because they are quiet. hdds get really loud if you have many but they are the only option if you need lots of space at sane prices.

power usage and noise are some really good reasons

>torrenting on SSDs

Attached: 1527699623649.png (1066x600, 217K)

i got one years ago and its still working

Attached: 1518908723756.png (951x440, 61K)

why not if its a seedbox with a connection thats faster than a hdd

Attached: camel3evo2.jpg (382x928, 280K)

>120GB is sufficient
It's not, it's nothing, it's not at all anywhere near sufficient. But it depends. My laptop can have one 2.5" drive. It's got a 500 GB SSD. That's fine. I do see how a 120 GB SSD combined with a 2 or 3 TB HDD would be fine for some desktop users but these days you might as well go 240 or even 500 there too. A 1 TB SSDs cost about as much as I paid for the 500 GB in my laptop right now.

This. SSDs aren't as cheap as HDDs in price per gigabyte but they sure aren't very expensive.

256GB SX6000 NVMe SSD $53
1TB MX500 $135
You must be a shithead. OP BTFO

>falling for the SSD meme
good goyim

>1TB is ridiculous for games
oh

ReadyBoost, do (You) use it?

Attached: DONALDC.jpg (300x240, 18K)

Tell software to stop bloating.
Really there's little reason most of the time. They're just not regarding it as important.

Attached: 64KQkRz2BaV6LkEN.png (760x749, 494K)

Samsung rapid mode and crucial momentum cache, are they a meme?

Linux doesn't have these problems

Merely 6-7 years ago ubuntu fits on a 700mb disc, now it's a 2gb download

Some of the software Ubuntu ships bloated, but I think it's also more software.

Gentoo's stage3 is 181MiB on x86 and 236 MiB on x86_64. I don't recall it was very much smaller ten years ago.

Storage size growth definitely far surpassed the growth of Linux software.

Winfag/gaymerfag Contrarian detected.
LOL silly britbong.
Found the weeaboo.
Winkiddie gaymer problems.
KYS weeb.
Gaymes and anime are for manchildren.
I bought DOOM and Wolfenstein in 1993 and they were only a few MB each.
Krikey!
Based.
Eurotrash.

A full-blown install will hardly use more than 8 GB, and even with tons of development packages it still won't reach 20 GB. A stock Windows install (just Windows, no Office, no VS, nothing) is 40+ GB.

500GB is not hard to fill up with audio and video.

>Cheap 120gb ssd
>Old WD Black hdd
>Bcache (StreMi on windows)
IT'S FUCKING GREAT.

Tiered storage is fucking amazing - use it.
If you're a window s baby you can get a 2Tb hdd a 256gb ssd and glue them together into one partition for everything including the torrent dumpster.

Yes why is it hard?
Stupid fucks want to go on how they won't replace their HDDs unless SSDs became cheap but yet when they're asked about just having atleast an SSD boot drive I don't get a single response

Call me when i can get a 1tb SSD for 80$

>until you need to stay current with your friends
all my friends use discord. I just open it in firefox when I need to use discord with them. No added persistent bloat.
>or be recognized at work
what did you even mean by this?

no

But the 970 Pro 1TB is very affordable. And there are cheaper SSDs as well.

They're headed that way.

Stfu poorfag plebbit baby

fuck that gay shit I'm waiting for 20TBs

Suprise suprise user, 26 years have past and games require much higher res textures, bigger enviornments and better newer tech than they used to.

Seagate will most likely launch 20TB drives next year, but I wouldn't touch them with a 100 foot pole because they're based on some new shit that shocks the platter with an electrical pulse before writing to it, and it took them 20 years to get it working right. I'd wait a year and let other people testdrive them before trusting it with my data.

What's the catch? Thats the same price I paid last year for my 256gb

>yikes
go work in your parent's basement
