Are external SSDs any good?

I want to finally get an SSD without opening or fucking with my setup. Will I still get good load times with an external one (specifically I want to install Path of Exile on it)

>fucking with my setup
How is placing a drive in your case and plugging in two cables "fucking" with your setup exactly?

i'm too brainlet to plug in the cables and don't know what I'm doing

the USB bottleneck will kill any read/write advantage that a SSD provides. do the research on swapping out your drive (and what drive/interface you need), it's worth expending the brainpower

The cables are key'd and different, it's impossible to fuck up.

The cable has only one place you can plug it into. You can put the SSD anywhere in your case, it needs no special cooling and has no moving parts.

The last time I did it, I cut my hand pretty badly. Some of us are that retarded.

stop being such a pussy retard

o....ok

Using the SSD as your OS/Boot drive is totally worth it. Just read up on how to install a SSD or watch some tutorials. You can learn how and do it, we believe in you OP

who here /storage drive SSD + external portable SSD/?

Insane fast transfer speed and file syncs

isn't a fast usb 3 drive good enough? also only my desktop has esata

putting in a new drive is the easiest thing about pc building
can you plug a lamp into a wall? then you can plug an ssd into your computer

it's much more complex than that user. it's more like plugging in a lamp to an extension cord then plugging that cord into the wall socket.

external ssd.

Only do this if you got a usb type c or external sata port.

Otherwise just use a regular old external hard drive

kek

Even with a cheapo 120gb sata ssd on a usb 3 caddy?

The prospect of 10-15 dollar >100GB sata ssds makes me consider using them as a kind of high capacity disc, reminds me of the old 100mb /250mb zip disc days

The sata spec is hotswappable right Jow Forums?

How could you be too Autistic to open up a PC and swap a drive? People like you don't even deserve to use a computer

>(specifically I want to install Path of Exile on it)
oh my god learn something you fucking moron. you can literally watch a youtube video in this day and age and learn how to do it in 15 minutes and it'll take you even less time to put one in your PC.
as a former PoE player when I put it on an SSD I got much better load times but it was INTERNAL which generally has much better response time than any fucking meme eSata or USB 3.0 bullshit.
if your motherboard has an M.2 slot get that or nvme if you can, if not, a regular sata SSD with good read/write speeds will still be miles better than the 5k hard drive you've got in there right now.

99% of consumers
but surprising he found Jow Forums.

If you're doing this do it right. Get a crucial mx500 drive and a USB3 caddy. Usb if faster than sata2 and supports UAS so if you didnt get a shit caddy then it's only marginally slower than internal. I haven't used an m2sata drive+caddy yet so I don't know about them. Don't ever get a normal external drive as they use shit controllers and have terrible write speeds, even the popular Samsung t5 is a pos.

HEY
These new SSDs are equipped to handle this
No bottleneck
That's why they cost $300-$400
I own the Samsung T5

fuck off to /v/, you underage shit.

lmao baylets

WARNIGN about the Crucial plastic case SSD series (BX series)

Crucial has good shit (MX series) with nice speeds and they stay cool. but their budget series gets 70 degrees during file transfer because it can't dissipate heat because of the plastic enclosure

And yeah, I regret spending that money

Oh dear, what happened to Jow Forums?

The absolute state of nu-Jow Forums

Kingston A400 wins again. Costs the same too.

Something like this happened to me irl
>friend says he wants to upgrade storage
>show him some SSDs and HDDs
>he ends up wanting an EVO even though he could have got the same specs for $40 less
>offers to pay me to install them
>tell him to fuck off with his money, I'll do it for free
>see he has a hotswap 2.5" on his case
>chuck the SSD in there cause I'm lazy
>it fucks out
>he offers again to pay me to put it inside the case
>tell him to fuck off with his money again, go put inside his case, 5 second job
He could have literally youtubed it, instead he offered to pay me. I'm not even IT, I'm a web developer

one of the best deals in fast storage medium is the crucial nvme ssd

sub-170 bucks for 1tb of super, super fast storage.

Those crucial NVME drives are qlc, avoid like the plague, just get the mx500 drives.

you CAN'T break it. just look at the orientation of the cables and everything will be fine

Attached: hddinstall_satainstall.jpg (500x188, 31K)

you're not a brainlet, just turbo lazy

you can actually very easily break a SATA cable if you force it the wrong way

true

and now i'm scared

ok lads, OP here, i bought an internal 240 gig SSD for 30bux if I fuck it up I'm not losing much

Attached: 30yoldboomer.jpg (400x400, 131K)

I bought a T5 very happy with it.

I have three-tiered storage. Stuff I always want on my laptop's SSD. Media like movies and roms on the external SSD. And an external HDD I plug in once a week or so for a backup (OSX+APFS keeps shadow backups of the internal and external SSDs in the meantime).

I get +500mb/s on my T5.

how the fuck was it 30 shekels? was it used?

They're certainly faster than all those USB """""3.0""""" thumb drives that are actually slower than USB 2.0

NO TRIM NO TRIM NO TRIM
NO TRIM
O

T
R
I
M

well if you drop them while they're running they won't break

>he doesn't know about the eternal Kingston shitdrive

Some do support TRIM over USB, at least the Samsung T5 + Windows.

Should I go with the Crucial mx500 or is Samsung better? I have a Samsung 850 and so far no problems, but I'm running out of space.

I have both crucial MX and Samsung Evo (2,5" sata SSD)

both are good. Consistent speeds and they don't choke after a couple of gigabytes like other cheap SSD from well known brands. Both Samsung and Crucial have patched the hardware accellerated encryption vulnerability that was discovered a couple of months ago (via firmware update)

Crucial has 24/7 english chat support which is a nice touch, not sure if Samsung has that. I'd say buy whichever is cheapest or on sale. Samung has had their 1TB 2,5" Sata SSD on sale very frequently

OP, if you’re gonna buy that Samsung T5, just be sure to reformat in TE native file system that you use and it should be good to go. Don’t bother with the preinstalled crap that it ships with.

>Path of Exile
Who manages this distro? What window manager you using? Kernel version??

Attached: 1528324221151.jpg (640x570, 22K)

Thanks for the info, user. I'll look around for sales.

No. I have used them. not fast, but expensive. buy a proper large enough internal ssd and live happy ever after.

>Read/Write
>Wtf are IOps
Retard

>open case
>locate SATA connectors
>plug one end of sata cable in there
>plug the other end to the drive
WOW MAN INSTALLING SSDS IS HARDCORE SHIT, DO NOT TRY IT AT HOME

instructions too complicated, penis got stuck in case fan

>only plugs in sata cable
You're so knowledgeable user!

I doubt a standard ssd can bottleneck usb 3.1

Attached: 1548824104966.png (446x435, 76K)

Notice how he said force it the wrong way? The only real way to screw it up is to be a tard and manhandle it. If you try to insert the plug, and it doesn't go, you stop and look at the ends, not apply retard strength to get it in. Can you do that? Are you a retard?
