Can't do 10 gigabit
>Gigabit
That's not enough, I want one cable that can do literally anything from video to iSCSI.

I basically just want fiber to stop being so goddamned expensive, we need to stop beating around the bush and just go straight to lightspeed.

He posted a picture titled Cat6

>plug is made out of cheap plastic
>hook breaks off easily

they are easy as shit to replace though. you can buy a bag of 50 for like 5 bucks

But why not just make the plugs out of metal instead? Having to replace them constantly is an inconvenience, therefore a flaw.

>hook breaks off easily
Maybe if you're a fucking neanderthal.

Try pushing against the hook with as little pressure as possible and see how easily it bends backwards. If it just gets caught on something or something gets wedged under it, it's fucked.

>If it just gets caught on something

Why would it get caught on something? Are you retarded?

So you never have to untangle or blindly reel in wires?

Cat5 can even do 10GbE, it's just not recommended and depends on the cable.
Cat6 is guaranteed to work.

>That's not enough, I want one cable that can do literally anything from video to iSCSI.
U.2 or Thunderbolt then.

> tethered

I've had a couple break. Am neanderthal though, so maybe you're just astute.

It's not wireless

do you know what happens when you bend metal back and forth like in the hook?

Ethernet cables make me feel safe.

its not cat 8

>He doesn't team his NICs

You also have to buy a tool for that.

10 Gigabit sfp+ is actually not very expensive these days. You can get a pair of mellanox connectX2 cards and a cable for $50 and a switch with two sfp+ ports and 24 gigabit ports for $140. I've been looking at this the last week. It's not very expensive.

The reason I haven't pulled the trigger on it is probably the same reason as to why it's so cheap right now: A 10 Gigabit Ethernet card's $100 and a switch with 2 10 GB ports and 8 gigabit ports costs around $350. This means the cost is a lot higher than sfp+ for now. That could change soon and I'm not entirely sure it's worth buying sfp+ gear just to get a bit higher speeds between my NAS and my desktop and HTPC when there's a fair chance I'll get 10gigabit ethernet gear at the same price six months from now.

I can't wait until data throughput saturation is so high that we're necessitating multi terrabit-petabit/sec hardware. Imagine what kind of data that would be.

$5.49

why do these have different plugs? and why is cat6 so much more annoying to jam in?

Thicker wires. Partially stacked to maintain the same connector width and preserves more of the twist to minimize crosstalk.

The eight wires makes it more expensive than other cables. Most building and industrial automation networks run off cheaper 2-wire systems because nobody wants to buy kilometers of CAT6 cable.

I wouln't run 10GbE on cat5 for more than a 1' patch cable

I hated those back in the day because it required expensive tool to crimp.

Before cheap chink tools came you needed $300 amphenol one that I had to borrow every time.

You are free to buy slightly, yes slightly, more expensive metal plugs. There's dozens of different materials from cheap plastic to expensive plastic to metals.

Then don't do that

THIS! Right here! I have an entire box full of those!

>not running everything with cat 6a
Talk about simple future proofing. 10gbe switches and routers and modems can be had for under $200 each. 10gbe cards can be had for $80 to $150 range.

My whole network other then my modem and wireless router is 10gbe. My desktop and server and switch are blazing fucking fast.

I'm more interested in lower latency. I want 5ms to the backbone or less. Fucking Comcast would never push for it.
