CS regret thread

>finally get my foot in the door with a junior dev position a year after getting my CS degree and working at fucking target to pay loans
>spend my entire working day refactoring code deliverables from other companies utilizing tata consultancy services for their production code
>code is written in a bizarre nasty creole mix of romanized telugu and english with useless comments everywhere
>probably 50-70% of the code is completely unusable or unmaintainable and we have to rewrite it from scratch
>forced to work lots of unpaid overtime, 50-60 hours a week pumping out store backend code for different e-commerce sites
>barely making more than minimum wage
>effectively forced to stick around for the experience because no other company would even give me an interview
>waking up every morning filled with dread
>going to bed wishing i didn't study to become a fucking computer janitor

Why do people come here to complain how CS didn't work for them? Like, what can we do? Simply, nothing. Sorry, user, but just get better and hopefully everything will turn out better.

>forced to work lots of unpaid overtime, 50-60 hours a week
you mean you aren't making any money for the extra 10-20 hours? do burgers not have labor laws?

Apparently, not.

Japanese working environment once again proven nothing more than a scapegoat for shit working conditions worldwide.

You should have went for a Criminal Justice minor alongside it so you could become the FBI agent watching peoples cameras, desu ne. That is my career path. Will be going for CS Major and CJ minor so I can be a glow in the dark nigger.

The only way to escape the wageslave cycle is to start your own business OP. And CS is excellent for that. Because you can create your own products to sell.

It's okay if it doesn't work the first time.

Validation desu

>not wanting to be FREE to do 10-20 hours of unpaid overtime per week
just shut up you dumb commie, grow a brain

usually it means they're a salaried employee who isn't held to hourly wage laws, which require them to be paid 1.5x your hourly wage for all hours worked over 40, and I think 2x over 60 hours.
You can avoid this by making them salaried.

>weeb

you deserver all the suffering you get
should've gotten an internship instead of watching anime all day

This. At my company you have to go through hoops to get OT and then you need a minimum of 15 hours extra before you get paid it and it's only your normal rate.

There's nothing good about computer science. I try to dissuade people from making my mistake everyday.
Throw it all away op. Study and do what you actually want to. You can't be miserable all your life. That's what I'm going to do. I'll take the pay cut so I can actually do something worthwhile

>tfw on a handpicked tiger team for a large company you all know
Sometimes doesn't feel real

>love low-level stuff, shell scripting, C, some Python, all using the Linux stack, but never really got into FOSS/anywhere near kernel development
>finally manage to get a job after an ordeal of applications and interviews
>IT/helpdesk role, administer Windows machines
>stick around hoping it'll get better
>"promoted" to it/sysadmin role
>administering the Microsoft stack, not a single Linux server anywhere
>quit
>repeat ordeal, finally land dev role
>was supposed to be Python/backend stuff but ends up being mostly frontend JS
>stick around out of desperation
>get fired for getting into disagreement about pushing data collection onto users, having to implement stupid stuff like Google captcha for no reason
>now working part time minimum wage at a supermarket
>haven't written a line of code in nearly a year, sometimes spend hours staring at an open vim instance doing nothing
>know the only way to get back in is to keep up with the latest meme frontend stacks, or learn enterprise stacks/java, but each time I start reading I get sick
>field is so flooded in a major city with multiple top colleges aorund that even helpdesk jobs are asking for experience and a degree
Don't fall for the CS meme unless you're autistic enough to have a huge FOSS portfolio from a young age - you'll be stuck using the latest gimmick stacks and mobile app/web trends.

What does these tata consultancy agency do, have an acquaintance of mine working as a consultant for them, wondered what that brainlet did on a daily basis.

>developer
>barely making more than minimum wage
Going to call bullshit on that one.

Attached: 1ze3.gif (500x492, 31K)

so instead of having nice comfy job, you cry over meaningless shit and feel rather dead instead?

have you ever even really worked

He might be a Europoor. Professional jobs pay about as much as burger flipping. Gotta love socialism.

>>get fired for getting into disagreement about pushing data collection onto users, having to implement stupid stuff like Google captcha for no reason

a real hero

How many hours a week do you guys typically put in?

as least as possible, while cracking jokes with management team and being a bro, so they don't fire me, because they like me for who I am too much

fucking great

10-4, taking half an hour for breakfast and 1 hour for lunch

>unpaid overtime

Join a union, holy shit. Why the fuck do Americans do this to themselves?

You metrics for productivity are horrendous. You can spend hours hunting down a bug or regression and fixing it, but management doesn't give a fuck. But you implement more tracking and telemetry and "prove" user engagement and this is what gets attention

the amount of anti union propoganda found in large corporations is scary.

autistic me reading this

Attached: 1547326652820.png (375x360, 71K)

I sometimes went working at Sunday, going for overtime, just to track down some simple issue, and because team leader pressures me into completing everything before current sprint ends. Also, no matter how much time I put, I am always a bottom feeder.

Fuck you bootlicker

>field is so flooded in a major city with multiple top colleges around that even help desk jobs are asking for experience and a degree
In this shit situation right now, literally saving every penny for the inevitable slow down or recession that will fuck an entire generation of code monkeys. Don't forget that every company is outsourcing or setting up foreign offices because "we get paid too much." H1B faggotry doesn't help either.

I worked at target while going to a "prestigious" (it was just expensive) uni, I actually miss working there. The shit I have to put up with, being in an in demand career. It sure doesn't feel like it by the way I'm treated and paid. My cousin is two years younger and went to a lower ranked college, he is now making twice as much as me being a Wall Street Chad. He is trying to convince me to get an MBA.

It seems like everyday, I have a "what am I doing with my life" moment. But, yeah, learn to code, kids.

ITT BAD FEELS

>major in human resources
>get hired by tech company
>work with cute stacies in nice smelling office
>i'm the only guy so they all low-key flirt with me
>get paid to write ridiculous job postings with insane job requirements
>all day I send rejections letters to retarded incel retards who are obviously qualified for the job but likely have zero communication skills and smell like ass
>90k salary, promotions every year

god it feels fucking good.

>tfw I implemented google tracking and analytics at work

Attached: c6b.png (680x680, 182K)

welcome to society, pussy. do what you have to do to stay sane and enjoy the paycheck.

So what if they dress well and can finish an entire sentence without stuttering?

You still don't give them the job because they'll take yours eventually.

>>forced to work lots of unpaid overtime
>>barely making more than minimum wage

Wut

>be me
>love computers
>maybe I should get into CS
>tfw I realized I was going to just become a cubicle drone for a big corp
>go into EE
>can do anything I want with computers and electronics

Take the hackerpill and become the true master race EE.

I would said about 45. I am salaried so I dont get overtime. I stay an hour after work each day because i am an incel virgin so its not like it matters if i come home right at 5 or not.

It also makes me look good, i usually just browse the internet and barely work during it anyways.

Here in the land of the free, there are multiple states that allow corporations to fire employees that try to unionize.

God bless america.

That's very different from my experience. Got an EE degree, no interesting or well paying jobs that wanted an EE, so ended up in software dev. It's way easier and pays well.

maybe 15 right now

you mean computer programmers get 1099's???

if you work over 40 hours you should be getting W-2s

I'm stunned because I thought coders had health insurance 401k etc

40
It's been insinuated to me that I should put in more, but I'm not going to unless there are extreme circumstances.

>tata consultancy services
Nice

fpbp

TATA is a huge Indian Conglomerate. Make Cars for 3rd Worlders through to pajeet code for Western outsourcing.

They also own Jaguar Land Rover. So it's not just 3rd World cars.

Guaranteed that faggot is still in college.

>Tata
Found the problem OP

we do, but most IT jobs fuck it up with overtime, on-call, answer emails / slack / discord on weekends, etc...
a warning.
ha
at mine they did it by pay period and those were every 2 weeks, so, you had to go over 80 in 2 weeks. so what they'd do is make you work 75 hours in one week then not have you work the next week. enjoy those 16 hour days and no overtime.
good thing you met that deadline.
>I'm stunned because I thought coders had health insurance 401k etc
not all of 'em. i had a 403b though.

>Study and do what you actually want to.
>what you actually want to.
well, how do I put it...
