HAMMR is an age old technology that can BTFO every HDD ever made.
Main drives have caching. External drives have disabled RAM caching so that when you get a "done copying", it's actually done copying and not just cached for writing and you can actually unplug it. What "safely remove" actually did before is immediately write all cache and check all locked files but now they just disable the cache.
none of this is with external drives. all sata
BTFO it in slowness maybe...
It's literally just SMR but now you ALSO have to do an extra heat+erase+cool cycle before rewriting an entire track.
i feel like heat adds so many variables, like tiny fragments of garbage are going to fuck HAMMR drives up quick in the real world...
windows? if so it's a caching thing. windows caches writes to drives it sees as internal in memory before writing data to a drive. ran into this not that long ago with an iscsi volume. if I tried to copy a large file to it it would either complete within a few seconds but the iscsi target would still show it being written for another minute or two, or if it was a large enough file, show a crazy fast transfer rate for a bit then slow back down to what the network transfer rate should be
