Tiny PC

Why isn't this more popular on Jow Forums?
I know most of these are not powerful as full fledged desktops.
But it's usable for every task, small enough to be carried anywhere, pretty good as HTPC, and aesthetic.

>needs keyboard mouse and monitor

There is no reason to use this over a laptop, or is there?

why not just use a laptop or tablet at that point

Because laptops exist

No I'm fucking serious. Cheap laptops do the same fucking thing and they're more convenient to use. Your CUC format is pretty pointless if you don't have multiple desktops with available monitor/keyboard/mouse configurations around.

I think it's pretty expensive for what it is.

>laptop
You can use a laptop, if you use a dock with it.
Dedicated mouse and keyboard, bigger monitor.
Most modern laptops are made with cheap plastic.
Thinkpads are the only decent one to get.
I have a zotac mini pc, it's actually quite convenient to have.
While it's not a power house, it's good enough to do most stuff.

>buying new
You get the older models for dirt cheap, I got M900 for 100$

Jow Forums is a budget board(aka poorfag)

>too underpowered for people who like tech and games or who have hobbies like digital drawing or streaming even
>not portable like a MacBook or laptop or tablet or phone

That thing combines the disadvantages of a desktop with the disadvantages of a laptop, the most disadvantageous type of computer.

>not portable due to requiring external monitor, mouse, keyboard and power
>no desktop performance
>no multiple SATA and PCI-e slots
>not upgradable

That's just the stupidest thing

>What's that in your pocket?
>Oh it's a PC
>Oh can I see how it works?
>Sorry it's just a fucking box until I get home

Because EOMA68 exists

imagine the smell

Already pre-ordered Ataribox. It'll be amazing, though it's sad they won't use Ryzen.

>that pic
It would make more sense if it were a phone. Librem 5 will be dockable. Why don't you just buy a dockable phone?

>digital drawing or streaming even
It can do these effortlessly, as long as you have enough RAM.

Fucking kek

Imagine being as disgusting as you are

Been thinking of getting a raspberry pi recently and installing Arch Linux Arm on it and sticking it to the back of a monitor, basically making my own aio and using it as a very basic desktop pc. Seems like a good option for making your own cheap daily use computer

Attached: 41CdYS1EvWL._SX425_.jpg (425x425, 13K)

I guess, I mean if you want lower power draw for your desktop a thin client makes sense, and if you plan not to play AAA games.

But the actual Irony is that certain thin clients can actually act as mini-servers to host certain services, for example, a 2400G thin client could use 32 GB plus worth of ram, allowing it to run heavy applications like apache metron etc.

YMMV.
>mouse/keyboard
Phone
>monitor+electricity
I live in a third world country and these are available everywhere I go.
>using computer in public so everyone sees your powerlevel
What's wrong with you?
>dockable phone
I have Note9, It's great.
Pretty usable too, need more dev support for application and it can be desktop replacement.

implying you don't have one of those at work and home

I've done something similar with a RPi0w, it gets the job done I guess.

Exactly, at work and home

Places where portability is not needed

these little thing are for people living in nano cubicles
otherwise its useless

I will get that diskmini a300 with 2400g if I haven't already got a mini itx build. Too lazy to sell mine, and having two mini desktop seems redundant.

i use a rpi on raspbian at work and it works just fine , most of my work is in .doc pdf ppt and browser so make out of that as you wish

I use one as a Qubes desktop. Works nice man.

Attached: d day thumbs up.jpg (300x300, 14K)

They're cool but one size factor up and you get full fledged components and dedicated graphics options.

Mini itx is definitely larger but you go from APUs and Intel integrated graphics to full size desktop GPUs, multiple drive options, more extensive rear I/o, etc

I'd like to get a tiny PC to have a portable desktop of sorts for when I'm in hotels, like a NUC, but at the same time a laptop can do that fine albeit with probably lesser hardware than I could get in a nuc

They're just a weird kind of product that's only guaranteed place in the market is POS machines or kiosks.

Attached: IMG_3604.jpg (4032x3024, 1.89M)

I personally don't see the point of very small PCs. Space in my home isn't at such an extreme premium that I'd buy a system because it's small while accepting multiple other compromises.

They are trash

My uncle has one and it is incredibly slow

Micro PCs are pretty much all complete shit apart from gen5 and above nucs. The gen 7 and gen 8 ones out now are actually fucking useable now.

Lenovo, and a few other companies make a few ultra small form factor units that are ok, but they are all generally more expensive than comparable nucs.

With the higher end nucs now, like the gen8 i5s, there generally are no compromises if you dont play the latest games or do heavy video editing,

HD 620 on the kaby lake mobile i series processors is where I think things really changed for the tiny pcs
8800GTX graphical performance with decent single thread performance dual cores isn't anything spectacular but a 15w i5 7200u pulling off 720p normal GTA V in a full system smaller than a desktop graphics card is really impressive, and it's only gotten better since.

How can I store all my Japanese cartoons on this?
It doesn't even have a CD player

Attached: BDB47632-609A-4D8E-95DD-874CDF25BC42.jpg (480x360, 17K)

Honnestly depends on what you are doing though to be fair, if you are just web browsing, doing some basic coding, admining other shit, consuming media and doing some general office stuff they are perfectly fine.

Because they're pointless when laptops, smartphones, tablets, and thumb computers (think pi, chromecast) exist

>HD 620 on the kaby lake mobile i series processors is where I think things really changed for the tiny pcs

Amen, the weird 7th/8th gen switch between dual core u and quad core chips has helped a lot. A quad core pentium 5005 is actually somewhat useable even though its a

I use an NUC as my Linux machine... works pretty good

>canyon lake

Crimson lake i meant.

Yes, if you only make very restricted use of your system you can make due with a NUC. Performance is hardly the only compromise though, you sacrifice a lot in terms of expansion capacity and room for upgrade as well. There's just no point to doing such a thing unless space is at an extreme premium for you, as I've said.

Yeah as i said, its only taken 7 or 8 hardware revisions for them to actually be reasonable now.

I cant imagine how shitty the gen 1-4 nucs were, gen5 was the first i used.

I have one at work. Feels great not littering your desk with a shitty docking station.

True, but i honestly think most of the nuc enthusiasts have other dedicated hardware going on such as network attached storage, servers and other stuff and a nuc out of the way on a desk or attached to a vesa bracket on the back of the display acts like a kind of terminal pc for admin and working with connected systems.

working on a small PC is a headache and your tower isn't something that you even look at most of the time. I like a big tower with a lot of empty space inside to get into without things being in your way.

I'm kind of saddned that no Ryzen Mobile miniPCs exist, Zotac announced some in 2017 but they never emerged.

Makes you wonder if some dirty tricks are happening. Or you know, it's just AMD's usual lack of support, retardation and the fact their drivers only get updated biannually

I bought one beginning of 2014 I think. It runs about 4 hours a day for music and movies. It doesn't play 4k, but it plays HD without problem thanks to hardware acceleration.

I'll change it when it dies.

There's plenty of android boxes that go for around $10-100+. However gnu/linux install might be limited and needs more research.

If you want a small computer why don't you just get an iPad Pro? or an android tablet if your poor lol

>Why isn't this more popular on Jow Forums?
Well I can only tell it from my perspective.
I have an income of around 100k per year. There is no need for me to buy something like that. What I have is a powerful self-built rig for me to do my software experiments, and for my wife to use her Adobe Creative Cloud for private jobs. Other than that I have all kind of Apple stuff and I'm even paying 10€ for movies on the appleTV if I'm too tired to throw on the VPN to torrent it.
I don't give a fuck about cheap computers.

I want one of these as a game console.
>$60 used
>ryzen 3/5 + 8GB ram
>thunderbolt for when eGPU enclosures are $30
>win ltsb (hopefully never connected to wifi)
>xbone controllers (hopefully they will be $10 used)
>gamecube, ps2, wii u and dreamcast machine

When can my dream come true or at least the price? 3 years? Maybe its more realistic to buy a laptop with thunderbolt, but I am pretty sure the enclosures won't be cheap for a while.

I've got a couple for HTPCs, but i'm looking at getting something more powerful and flexible and maybe moving up to an ITX formfactor. right now i feel my top option is the Streacom F1C With a Ryzen 2200G/2400G

Attached: st-f1c-evo-ws-both-large.jpg (2384x470, 61K)

They cost 2-10x as much as the chinese x86/ARM htpc and ARM SBC that can do the same thing if processing power isn't critical and you don't need large storage arrays either. That's probably why.

Brrraaaaaaap

Thunderbot is impossible, Intel are being jews with the thunderbolt chipset, i would have hoped that AMD could create a comparable PCIE bridge... but afaik thunderbolt devices need a controller on both ends, so it's unlikely OEMs will stick both an AMD and Intel controller on their products.

Around 6-8 years for the computer hardware to appear used at that price.

Thunderbolt never, plus fuck retarded eGPU.

Controllers will also generally drop to only 1/3 of their new price. But you could get a chinese mocute 054 or something for rathet close to $10.

Tablets are oversized phones, not computers.

name some

You might be expecting too much with accurate ps2 emulation without a reasonable budget, you're gonna need higher end hardware for that.

youtube.com/watch?v=KmdNvD0QfJY

The cheap shitty gen8 pentium silver nuc (2nd lowest hardware spec) is pretty close with everything else though. Just wont do PS2.

Odroid xu4/c2, rock64pro, orange/banana pi, whatever you see for htpc at gearbest or ali or other csg stores.

Attached: 20161108111507_49115.jpg (400x400, 15K)

His estimate of ryzen 3/5 and 8gb RAM wasn't bad for that, it just has the current price tag rather than a wishful thinking one.

You only "need" the Ryzen 2200/2400G if you're compiling Gentoo or operating multiple PCI cards / more than 4 drives or playing games.

For a box with 1-4 drives and more desktop/office type use, you'd likely be fine with a J5005 or 200GE. Or for up to 2 drives as Linux user, with a Rock64Pro.

Not that the Ryzen 2200G or 2400G are bad, they do fill a niche.

>too underpowered for people who like tech
lol

they are meant as cheap workstations for businesses since laptops cost more
most of Jow Forums wants something more powerful or more portable

What does Jow Forums need a more powerful computer for?

gay man and compiling gaytoo

> most of Jow Forums wants something more powerful
Not really. Much of Jow Forums HAS a more powerful computer, but the lower end machines are ideal for porn viewing / torrent seeding / server daemon hosting / NAS managing / shitposting / 2d image editing / ... boxes.

I guess as burger you're probably less aware of power costs, but even then it's usually worth it.

> compiling gaytoo
Actually works fine on a i3/i5 as in OP's pic. Or Ryzen 2200/2400G. Even a J5005 isn't too hard.

People were compiling Gentoo in the 32bit age already, and apart from browser bloat (which you can dodge with -bin or AppImages or nix package or in other ways on Gentoo) nothing has changed THAT much in terms of compiling.

thats too bad, I hate intel
I have two xbone controller already, but I would like some cheap ones that work as good.
I don't need accurate, just gewd enough. Snake eater looked like shit because it was made for CRTs so it had those weird lines last I used it because I didn't know better

Does it, though?
>Originally expected to ship on Mar 20, 2017
>Currently expected to ship on Mar 31, 2019

you mean smart.

They are also more convenient for taking up less space and causing less cable clutter.
I have two, both attached to a screen.

>but I would like some cheap ones that work as good.
The Mocute 054 do work fine, I had no problem playing through Hat in TIme and other games.

I'm guessing most people would say the buttons don't feel quite as good as the current console controllers, but you get a lot for what you paid for, and unlike the current controllers they're really close to the price you want.

Attached: mocute-054.jpg (1000x1000, 99K)

dat ass tho

money software my wifes adobe and son, fuck of.

he didnt talk about cheap. I have disposable income ® myself but fuck huge towers, good thread OP.
New Gen Mac Mini seems too retarded for me, guess mini itx with ryzen is next, have a older intel nuc and can fully recommend it, makes a nice terminal.

have a couple of these I use to host private game servers with, the asrock board has dc power built in, no need for a PSU. About as big as a cable box.

Attached: 20190207_152848.jpg (4032x3024, 1.99M)

not sure if these count as tiny, have 2 identical boxes, makes a perfect living room PC.

Attached: 20190207_154544[1].jpg (2712x1627, 1.01M)

surely this is the ticket for a mini PC

Attached: 20190207_155527[1].jpg (1800x1350, 457K)

Would make a great homemade router.

probably because they misspelled center

i just wanna huff it

if you think vags are nasty i've got news for you

There are some compromises with NUCs. U-series processors are slower than similarly priced T-series in "micro" PCs like the one OP posted, and noticeably slower than regular 65W processors in SFF PCs; tiny fan gets pretty audible under load; only 2 USB on the rear is kind of ass if you use non-BT keyboard/mouse; audio output is either through HDMI with a receiver or splitter, or an unsightly cable dangling from the front.

I like the Pentium-based NUCs as cheapo internet/office machines though. Since the cooling system is rated for 15W+ and the CPU is like 6W maximum, it's near-silent, and lack of ports and drive bays isn't that important. I just wish Intel paid more attention to out-of-the-box Linux support - starting with NUC6CAYH they decided to use some shitty new DP to HDMI converter chips and it took them several months and several BIOS and converter FW updates to unfuck HDMI audio support in alternative OSes.

>16 GB of memory for a CPU that's barely faster than a duo2cuo

where did you get those beautiful stickers

it allows a life is feudal, wurm and 7dtd server to run simultaneously.

you like muh stickers

Attached: 5344760492.png (300x135, 32K)

That pencil is huge.
Lenovo was banking in people not remembering the size of pencils. That thing is wider than a USB port and it's closer to the "camera".

not at starbucks.

Imagine being retarded enough to think CPU speed is even remotely relevant to the amount of RAM.

>That pencil is huge.
Yeah, it's also not real. Retard.

yeah one would think, the slower the processor the more ram you would want, at least I would.

Attached: 1459265569987.jpg (603x324, 105K)

For most tasks these are related. I can name some outliers, but mostly of the "lots of processing power, little RAM" kind.

I had one of these, only replaced it when I needed moar PCI / SATA bandwidth on that box. Really nice when they were released.

One of the most sensible machines in this thread. Not that you should hunt one of them down, a J5005 or 200GE or Ryzen 2200G is probably just better now.

Would cooling be better than a laptop that is chugging at full load all day?

Literally just a tablet without a screen and battery.

You can do very good cooling in rather small desktop boxes, sure.

What is your laptop doing though? A lot of tasks now work fine on one small cooler or passively cooled.

Tiny PCs usually have laptop-like cooling, so it's more or less the same. Might be better than some ultra-thin laptop with an ultra-thin flimsy fan though.

>sheeeeit ya

Not that that would be bad, given that it'd still have ports that you need and all that.

But no. These are running rather powerful Intel CPU with a lot more power draw than a tablet would use.

can't upgrade cpu or motherboard.

*Mic Drop*
