Install Plan 9.
Install Plan 9
why tho
It's better than whatever you're using.
What if I use inferno and program exclusively in limbo
>can only play motion-jpeg
>shit compiler
I will but never for main machine
>Plan 9
>Not using Inferno which is still developed instead
Fucking pleb
still developed == unfinished
meanwhile Plan 9 is complete
Complete as in no new features, ever.
plan 9 is centered around using the mouse, which I don’t like.
How about Genera instead?
what makes it special?
does it have an appstore?
a gui?
a webbrowser?
can I use it on my hone or my work computer to be productive?
>an appstore
i don't think OP was addressing you, he's talking to tech literate people, you can just keep using your ipad
Um excuse me, I use arch
my laptop only has 2 buttons ;_;
But it literally has an app store, 9fs contrib
yeah it does have all that, some of those are even better than conventional alternatives
This. The UI is cancer. Probably seemed like a good idea at the time.
It is useful for internet services though.
>yeah it does have all that, some of those are even better than conventional alternatives
show me
post some images or videos of the desktop environment
There is 9front!
plan 9 is good if you have another computer with a modern OS, otherwise the only thing you can do is edit text files.
>chat on irc
>chat on discord
>use Jow Forums
>tweet
>code
>read bundled literature like the communist manifesto or mein kampf
>listen to music
>email
>examine astronomical data
Let's say I want to edit a picture. Or design a poster and output it to pdf, even. Modify an audio file. How do I do these things?
And:
>chat on discord
How?
you can edit pictures with 9front paint, rotate, crop, resample
you can design a poster with troff, it supports pdf output
you can do rudimentary audio trimming or mixing with mixfs and standard plan 9 utilities
there's a discord client at bitbucket.org
>you can edit pictures with 9front paint, rotate, crop, resample
>you can design a poster with troff, it supports pdf output
>you can do rudimentary audio trimming or mixing with mixfs and standard plan 9 utilities
so basically you can't do beyond the most basic of actions. proves me right, you should have a separate computer to get real things done
You don't. Inferno is a dead operating system.
>what makes it special?
Programmer-friendly
>9trannies
*C* programmer friendly, you mean
Based
just do all those manually like back in the day
As opposed to other OSes that are friendly to no-one. If you think they are, it's because you've never used Plan 9 and you're essentially saying Linux is 100% good *compared to Linux*. No shit - it's like being on Windows and thinking drive letters are normal
Alright, explain to me how it actually is friendly, and how other UNIX systems aren't as good with plan9port
Take a screenshot of yourself posting to Jow Forums
reading the source and running debuggers is a realistic proposition, as opposed to Linux where "its open source, you can study the code!!" is constantly touted as a feature and yet you'll never see a Linux user actually do it.
in fact, the system pretty much invites this; man pages have links to the source, and if it doesn't then the command `src' can the symbol table.
plus you can basically intuit how a command on plan9 must work, anyway
The "it literally does nothing" OS.
Good only for modern day ascetics who have given up on any kind of visual, auditory, internet-based, or interactive stimuli.
This. Plan 9 is good but having it as your only system would be insane.
Can you watch anime on plan9?
I second this question, is important
No, and even if you could, you shouldn't.
Bleh
Don't mind me, just developing on 9front right now
Acme > Vim & Emacs
Prove me wrong
i mean, in 2019 that's arguably good choice to make, everything is a fucking ad ridden eyesore
Can you make electronic music on it?
Yeah, well, kind of. There was one guy in the 9fans discord who had an entire DAW built on 9front that his girlfriend deleted or something. He's quite the cuck.
I remember you
does it have its own gui system or is it another thing that just uses xorg
No xorg.
is acme a basic editor or a clusterfuck of configuration? i used emacs for about 3 years before switching to vim for 2. now i use nano with syntax highlighting turned off and i hate it, but at least it's basic and doesn't get in the way. all editors suck full-time from what i can tell. i suppose text editing is a deceptively simple problem to solve. i would give leafpad a try but i prefer to edit text in a terminal for ease of access.
try sam, it's one of those classic programs (it has a heading in esr's art of unix programming) you're not allowed to go without ever trying
and acme isn't something you need to "configure" (either).
neat, thanks guy[s].
Can you watch videos on plan9? Specifically anime video files.
Please tell me someone had a backup
>use Jow Forums
kek no
I watch anime on my big screen TV and stereo system while sitting on the couch next to my large-breasted wife and simply use my computer to shitpost and write code.
>Rob Pike's OS
No thanks
What's wrong with Rob Pike?
Everything he's come out with is cancer.
No, the guy is a cuck who just wanted to dick wave his awesome thing he made that everyone wanted, and then fucking lost it. 9front is a great OS but some of the people in 9fans are literally retarded
Look at him
>the retardness of unix to the extreme
Fuck you.
>all that white
herd u liek white
Loving it
>The key point here is our programmers are Googlers, they’re not researchers. They’re typically, fairly young, fresh out of school, probably learned Java, maybe learned C or C++, probably learned Python. They’re not capable of understanding a brilliant language but we want to use them to build good software. So, the language that we give them has to be easy for them to understand and easy to adopt. – Rob Pike 1
> utf-8
> Plan 9
> sam
> structural regular expressions
Just off the top of my head.
I think you are the cancer user
> white
Where? Except for Glenda there's no white in pic
Are there any screenshots of it?
I don't have them, but mischief might.
UTF8 is cancer, he tried to shove Go into Plan9, sam is ass, structural regex is OK.
What is wrong with UTF-8?
Do you enjoy juggling codepages?
Can plan9 be riced?
What can 9front do?
just use utf-16 and drop the ancient chinese shit that fucked up the standard. there are literally single poems from over a thousand years ago that use one single obscure meta-character, which is most probably just an ancient spelling error, so for some reason they added all of those excedingly rare characters to the standard like a bunch of fucking retards. the fact some brain-dead commitee made a horrible decision regarding a standard doesn't mean the underlying idea is bad. utf-16 sans the "ancient chinese" (see: typo) extension is better than utf-8 in every way.
why does it look like temple os?
THEN USE THIS FUCKING THEME INSTEAD OF THE WHITE CANCER!
you are retarded
Can I use emacs on any form of plan9 from Bell labs
Are you telling me to just inflate all my standard ASCII text into 2 bytes? Effectively doubling the memory storage of all English text? That is retarded.
That isn't what I asked you. You sound like a retard who tried and failed to implement your own UTF-8 and then cried and said it's shit.
So in short: nothing i wrong with UTF-8 besides your own ineptitude and confusion over 1-4 variable byte characters you are ill equipped to deal with.
give me one reason utf-8 is better than pre-extension utf-16, then.
No, but there are ed, sam, and acme, which are better. Or you could write an emacs port for Plan 9. Or write your own text editor.
Nice CoC.
utf-8 is just prefixed bytes breaking apart unicode codepoints
[[1110xxxx] 110xxxxx] [10xxxxxx]+
binary >> and & to sort it and | to prefix. i've done it in bash even with shitty $(()) garbage.
the fact you use standard ascii doesn't mean much to everyone else who is using other alphabets that require three and four bytes per glyph, effectively doubling the size of their data to twice what ascii glyphs become in utf-16.
finding the length of a utf-8 string is expensive vs a utf-16 string.
utf-16 doesn't require juggling code pages either. i use unix, too, but let's not pretend it isn't ancient shit overflowing with bad ideas.
If it's in avi, sure: bitbucket.org
send patches, aeggy
you realize the coc page is randomized, right?
I use other characters but primarily English because I have a fucking job.
The next time I'm making a faggot anime fan site in moon runes I will consider that.
Whatever you tell it to do
I like Glenda!
ok, I'll install it
There's some stuff here: runjimmyrunrunyoufuckerrun.com
with other program source here:
runjimmyrunrunyoufuckerrun.com
>not even addressing the strlen issue
>thinking moon runes are the high unicode points
it's like you don't even know what you're talking about. i assumed you were going to tell me to prove it so i just wrote this trash quick. this is what utf-8 requires you to do to get from a simple, efficient, 2 byte code to unix-style 4 byte brain damage.
#!/bin/bash
cp=$(( 16#$1 ))
if [ $cp -lt $(( 16#80 )) ]; then
printf "\\\x%02x\n" $cp
elif [ $cp -lt $(( 16#800 )) ]; then
a=$(( $cp >> 6 | 2#11000000 ))
b=$(( $cp & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
printf "\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\n" $a $b
elif [ $cp -lt $(( 16#10000 )) ]; then
a=$(( $cp >> 12 | 2#11100000 ))
b=$(( $cp >> 6 & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
c=$(( $cp & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
printf "\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\n" $a $b $c
else
a=$(( $cp >> 18 | 2#11110000 ))
b=$(( $cp >> 12 & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
c=$(( $cp >> 6 & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
d=$(( $cp & 2#111111 | 2#10000000 ))
printf "\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\\\x%02x\n" $a $b $c $d
fi
Can I edit a professinal HD video on it and upload it to YouTube?
Using three button mouse? Completely mouse driven? Fuck this garbage
UTF-16 uses more memory in primary english text, and is also still variable width between 2 and 4 bytes.
Since you don't care about memory just use UTF-32 along with the few other autists that actually still use it.
utf-16 uses only 2 bytes prior to the dumb ancient chink extensions. see my post here just drop the stupid all-inclusive bullshit and it's a solid standard.
I just use ASCII.
Plan 9 has no basis in reality. Its just a cool project.
It better support emojis!
GNU Hurd support emojis on their terminal
patches, aeggy
Jokes aside, how its the terminal emulator implement in Hurd?
Is an abomination like linux one or is decent?
