Does Jow Forums buy used PC hardware?

I used to sell refurb hardware. But I had to lie and claim used because people doesn't like refurb.

fuck no. I don't want a component that has been handled by some fatass who doesn't wash his hands

It's a gamble but most of the time you have to consider what usually ends up failing first like HDD, RAM, MB, and the PSU. Things like CPUs, GPUs rarely fail. I generally would not trust the HDD and immediately replace it with a new SSD.

You should do 24 hour burn in tests to find out if anything is borked just to be safe like a prime95 + furmark stress test after changing the TIM on the CPU/GPU and dusting the heatsinks.

for my old systems yes.
Usually ram

Yup. I bought almost all my current equipment in the aftermarket. Including stuff like gaming consoles and household appliances.

are you speaking from experience? RAM and CPUs usually last forever, while GPUs, MBs, HDDs don't last as long; on average of course. at least that's what I've experienced over the years.

What if the hardware was stolen or mishandled

Yeah. Turned out ok mostly. I won't buy used RAM/PSUs though.

yes, when my video card gets old I buy the same model second hand and go SLI for another year

What if they have warranty? I bought a used PSU with 4 year warranty.

My build consists of used cpu + two used 2TB + 3TB HDD + used case + used powersupply (750W 80+ Platinum something) + used 16GB DDR3 ram

Werks fine

CPUs, because CPU failure is rarer than unicorn shit.

thats ebays problem, not mine.

retard

Where is the best place to sell used PC parts?
I have 16 GB DDR3, a 4670k, and a motherboard collecting dust

Some stuff, yeah. Monitors, GPUs, CPUs, accessories, motherboards, disk drives, stuff like that.
RAM and storage are a no-no.

most my rig/setup is used bar psu/ssd/hdd. no issues yet and it cool if you're a cheap fucker like me.

New PSUs in off lease besiness workstations with "refurb" datacenter hard drives and used GPUs is the best possible value.

eBay/Craigslist

i've been buying used hardware my entire life, the only two things i remember buying new were two smartphones and some pc parts. my every cpu/gpu/mobo was used, i've only been buying new hard drives and PSUs. i haven't got fucked over even once, used stuff is amazing

I get the storage, but RAM? If you buy it from eBay or whatever you can always return it, and if from another place, test it before on a stress test fro like 15 minutes.

how does it feel to be poor?

Yes bought a few T420s and 790s for senpai. HDD were always the fried after a year or two so now resort to SSD install day 1.

That's different, if it has a 4 year then it will probabky be fine. It's those no-name and sometimes OEM chink PSUs you gotta watch out for.

elaborate

t. certified computer tech who used to work in computer repair

his objection is probably to the stress testing for 24 hours

if something is going to go wrong it won't take that long

Only shit like CPU cooler or a case. Anything else is just asking for trouble.

Hmmm you can never be too sure especially since you're buying used equipment with shortened lifespan that rarely if ever has an active warranty on it as well. I personally run the stress tests from one night into the other and if prime95/furmark are still functional and OS has not crashed/frozen then it passes my test.

If it came to an absolute minimum tho 8 hours would be my number.

idk you obviously have more experience here but I have had no troubles with my CPU, SSD or GPU

Just baught an ASUS gtx 980 for 80 euros. Works like a swiss clock.

a retro agp card

I tend to avoid buying used, but I bought a couple of graphics cards which were all fine (a long time ago). The radiator and reservoir in my current water loop were also bought used, those were a really damn good decision as I'm still using them like 8+ years later.

That's good to hear, failure rate of used stuff is actually much lower than new stuff that fails from manufacturing defects on day 1 so I may be overly cautious but I leave the tests running from one day into the other unattended so it doesn't bother me much desu.

Anyway the reason I do all this is to test the integrity and stability of the CPU/GPU, RAM, PSU, and HDD all at once instead of one by one as I understand it does. Only had 2 times where this failed and of course it was the HDD after I did a fresh install on a new SSD.

I still have the HDDs btw and they could possibly be salvaged if I fully formated them, nuked them with 1 0 pass, and formated them again but seems like too much of a hassle especially when they're 5400 rpm spinning rusts with virtually no cache.

It's very nearly your only option for retro builds. Building a Windows XP single core last hurrah PC for playing early to mid 2000s games on a CRT next. Not gonna scope Ebay for two years just to gather all the parts sealed in packaging.

I pick up good deals, put in a but of work and flip them for a bit of cash, mostly as a hobby, buy new for my own PC, also dumpster dive a bit, found a HP microserver a few days ago, lol only had a 160 GB drive and as far as I could tell no other drives in it ever.

I'd rather spend 30-50% more on new and have warranty in the case that it fails, the used item might have warranty but it's usually only a year left or less and that's not remotely enough unless it's a stopgap for something else.
If I purchase a used item off Gumtree and I get scammed, I'm shit out of luck too.

bought rx570 for $80.
4gb samsung ram 85% asic.
overclocks to 1.4GHz 1.02V core and 2180MHz ram :^)

can't max out ffxii because lol squarenix a shit.

Bought a used liquid cooled 980Ti and the cooler failed within the year
ended up buying a used cooler and frankensteining it
ultimately worth it

I buy everything used because I know what I'm doing.
If you're a mouth breathing dumbass, buy new so you get a warranty.

paying extra for a warranty is just throwing money away.

not since crypto mining - except HDD's, RAM, CPU's ...

GPU's? i'm not retarded why would i buy something 20-40% cheaper without warranty - GPU's fail regularly

Bought used once. Died in 1 year. Never again.

bullshit, how are you posting then

only used drives, it's a great place to get unique amateur porn

Depends. Laptops may be safe, especially business models, CPUs and RAM are most probably safe, the rest: HDDs, SSDs, GPUs, mainboards - depends on the seller's honesty.
> lol honesty
There are forums with their own local community and people who know each other.

>Does Jow Forums buy used PC hardware?
Only if it happens to be exactly what I am looking for at reasonable discount for not having warranty and only from a source I trust not to sell broken hardware or to send a rock in a box.

> furmark
> from one night into the other
Oh doge
I remember the rant of one gray seller who privately sold some of his equipment without VAT. One of the customers left Furmark overnight and literally fried the card, PCB became yellowish-brown.

>HDD were always the fried after a year or two
What were you doing with them? Out of 14 mechanical hard drives I've bought only 1 has died. Oldest WD black I got has over 4000 days powered on time
>so now resort to SSD install day 1.
I've had a 480gb intel SSD die after 3 weeks in use, that was in 2017.

>One of the customers left Furmark overnight and literally fried the card, PCB became yellowish-brown.
What card was that?

>Things like CPUs, GPUs rarely fail.

You understand that GPUs have fans on them right? You do know what dust does to the bearings of a fan, don't you?

On a GT 1030 placement card till I start gaming again maybe in a year or two.

>But I had to lie and claim used because people doesn't like refurb.
really? a lot of people i know refuse to buy used and would rather take refurb
my parents always give me shit for buying used hardware

what did you buy and for how much lower than new price?

You're assuming I bought recent stuff. It was an old HD 7970 years ago for Overwatch and Planetside 2.

My current system is built from eBay parts. Sellers who buy liquidation stock in bulk and offload for cheap are the best.

Supermicro X9SRA.
Intel Xeon E5-2680v2.
128 GB DDR3 ECC 1600.

Cost me £600. The chip and the board were a little over £200 from one seller and the RAM nearly £400 from another.

I will be upgrading GPU next because the GTX 670 I got years ago is the bottle neck in rendering performance.

I'd probably buy used parts more often if it didn't mean having to deal with fucking ebay, god do I hate ebay.

I have a selection of stores I use that specialise in buying pallets of decommissioned / liquidated gear and then selling it on in parts. It's a business for them and they're pretty professional for the most part. Any returns I've had to make have been effortless for me.

Private individual sellers who're just offloading their junk I've dealt with in the past and I wouldn't touch them now. Unless they were local and I could go and see the shit working myself.

I hate getting punked and talking to other people in general so fuck no
PC hardware is something that you can buy absolutely new and fresh without paying that much for the novelty of it

do you sell panties?

well done for 600 you got a cpu thats 2x slower than ryzen 2600 and tons of worthless ddr3

This setup is a few years old now... Ryzen wasn't out when I built it. So...

That's pretty nice, my rig is an older Xeon based system - dual x5650s, supermicro x8dtl-if and 24gb ram which cost me £125. Paired it with a used 970 for £120 and it's a pretty solid combo, decent gaming performance too.

Don't know what benchmarks you're looking at...

Ignore the faggot, the newfags on this site are short sighted and are always easy to point out.
