I use searx and startpage as a backup. Google is a last resort. Last time I used duckduckgo the results were trash.

Has anyone tried hosting their own searx?
Alternatively, would a browser addon that randomly switched between searx mirrors each time you loaded the browser be useful? Maybe it would be harder to profile you, or trust a single mirror with all your searches.

Yes, no issue at all on muh Linux. Probably no issue at all on just about any Linux with docker installed.

Depends on what you're searching for. The OSM data is rather extensive in a bunch of regards and augmented by mapillary and stuff.
