Linux also played well with DOS from way back. The best way to dual boot was to start DOS by default and then use LOADLIN.EXE to boot into Linux from there as needed. On more powerful machines there was DOSEMU as well, long before virtualization.

WSL isn't a source-to-nt port like msys2 or cygwin
It's an emulation of Linux kernel in exactly the same way wine is an emulation of NT+WIN32
So in WSL you don't run sed.exe (like in cygwin or msys2) linked to msys2.dll or cygwin.dll
Instead in WSL you run the BINARY IDENTICAL sed you run in real Ubuntu/Debian, etc
