Ethical question

Our client whom I've been working with for nearly a year has offered me a full-time job. It's a 20% raise with 30k equity in the new company. How much of a scumbag would I be if I bailed on my boss and took the job?

My 3 year contract with my employer doesn't end until June 2020, but there are no classes that prevent me from ending it or taking a job from a client.

Posted this in tech because I'm thinking some of you may be consultants...

how is it unethical to take a better job?

This isn't the 60's anymore. Company loyalty is moot. Look out for yourself and realize your employer would dump you the moment u weren't worth it.

take the better job, if your boss could make money by firing you he would. stop being a cuck

If I have learned one thing about the working world is that you're always disposable. You are disposable, your boss is disposable, everybody up but the owner is disposable. Feign loyalty and hardwork but always be ready to leave. It's a business. Are you there to make friends or money?

If someone came along at your job and could do what you do just as well but cost 20% less do you think you would be spared?

'''''employer loyalty''''' is a sham

Take the job. You were always an at-will employee and your employer could have fired you at any time for any reason.

Your boss would replace you with a chair and a cardboard cutout if he could make the numbers work. Anyone who is not happy for you for finding a higher paying job is not interested in your wellbeing.

Eh. Depends highly on your relationship with the current company and boss. Is it a 6-person startup which would crash and burn if you left? Is it a faceless giant corp with 14k employees where no one would notice for a month if you left?

Makes a big difference, at least I would make my decision heavily dependent on that.

How much do you like your current job? If you really like it, you might be able to talk to your employer about the offer and get a raise at your current position. Even if he can't match their offer, he might be able to get you a reasonable raise without the hassle of starting over somewhere new.

If it's all the same to you and one company is as good as another, why would you not accept the better offer on the spot?
