actually data engineers just handle a lot of the pipelines needed to move data around, like elasticsearch, redshift, postgres, various APIs and AWS services like S3. So basically they handle ETL, not building shitty sklearn models.
I have worked on both sides of the field since I have a math background and have seen this separation in all my companies.
