What's the best sub $500 desktop DAC/AMP?
Is the Fostex HP-A4BL any good?

Redpill on STAX: STAX is an old Jap company with outdated tech that was considered high end back in the 1960s and 1970s but sounds like ass by today's standards, so they went nearly bankrupt. They were purchased by a Chinese company for just a million dollars who decided to market STAX to the audiophool "more expensive is better" demographic who buys those crappy $3000 vinyl players, they shill heavily on HeadFi and here on /hpg/, plus they pay Zeos to shill their crap just like Fostex does.

>In December 2011, Chinese loudspeaker manufacturer Edifier announced the acquisition of 100% equity in Stax

Oratory has measured the highest end STAX, the SR-009S.

dropbox.com/s/61srehjyaltd7w0/Stax SR-009S.pdf?dl=0

dropbox.com/s/dm0m6u3s3b4zqzl/Sennheiser HD600.pdf?dl=0

It's worse than the HD600. HD600 scored 92 and SR-009S scored 76.

In a separate study:

>The very highest end STAX ($4000 SR-009) was rated lower in blind tests than a $200 K701

aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=17441

Even best Stax headphones sound objectively worse than mid-fi. This is why they don't demo them in store, they rely on the internet to create a sense of mystique around STAX and shill it as the endgame because its expensive, Asian, rare and obscure. In reality its no bass sounding garbage, with shrill highs that appeal only to near-deaf boomers. They have relatively high distortion, way higher than high end planars. And what they say is true, they have no soundstage.

To add insult to overpriced injury, they have shitty plastic build quality that you would expect on cheap chinkshit headphones:

>canned tea
that's a yikes, right? because I think that's a yikes.

Redpill on Sapphire: Sapphire is an autistic NHA who shits up /hpg/ regularly in order to control the narrative. He spams every thread with the same copypasta over and over again in a vain attempt to get people who disagree with him to leave. He will consistently post and misinterpret graphs, and the ones included in this post are no exception.

>Oratory has measured the highest end STAX, the SR-009S.
Price has no correlation to quality. Oratory himself says "The Stax 007 (with the blue-tac mod!!) is one of the most neutral headphones out there. Truly amazing."
reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/70809n/_/dn4b93u/

>It's worse than the HD600. HD600 scored 92 and SR-009S scored 76.
And the Etymotic, which this poster also shills, scores a 41.

>The very highest end STAX ($4000 SR-009) was rated lower in blind tests than a $200 K701
>aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=17441

This has been debunked hundreds of times, the study does not draw the same conclusion. In fact, STAX were chosen as a baseline due to their extraordinarily low distortion.

Sapphire is mad that he's losing grip of /hpg/'s discourse. He will spam, samefag, and shill, all while accusing the opposing side of doing what he does, pre-emptively. In terms of distortion, STAX measures as well as high end planars, reaching the limit of Tyll's rig - they are audibly transparent.

> they pay Zeos to shill their crap just like Fostex does.
So the is shit?

A yikes and a proof that floor user is a dweeb. Who the fuck would buy canned JAPANESE tea in the US if not a complete dweeb?

Doesn't Fostex make really nice biodynas?
I'm not too sure about the whole modding culture around their RP line and DAC/AMPs are just DAC/AMPs, but Fostex should be more than alright when compared to most audiofool companies.

Floorchad is based, never stop posting please

Fostex makes good transudcers but even their headphones is mostly seeped in the typical audiofoolery. People on /hpg/ will mostly note on the aesthetic, not the foolery side of it, but the real reason why fostex makes their headphones out of woodcups is that it targets the audience of people who believes wood to have actually valuable sonic properties. It's amazingly dumb.
The headphones themselves aren't anything too special. Beautiful but fragile woodwork, flimsy hinge design, earpads that are noted as inconfortable and in need of replacement for something else by virtually all its owners and sound signature / default tuning that isn't particularly pleasing. They're sold as closed headphones but they don't isolate better than open headphones. How's that for stupid?

What about the Fostex DAC/AMPs?
Is the Fostex HP-A4BL any good?

It's pretty simple to mod them closed. And the wood does have measurable sonic differences, it's nothing "special" though, just another form of tuning.

Attached: EE7EBE58-284E-45FC-936B-C576D38D2350.jpg (3036x2881, 1.64M)

I don't know. You already asked this question, you don't need to ask a second time, I didn't say anything because I had nothing to say.

Your CD might be scratched floor user, that makes the sound waves distorted. Use vinyl

Pretty much everything you said is right, but their actual audience is people who are looking for exciting, energetic sound, which those are notorious for providing.
I think people who don't want to overpay should probably find a nice discounted Fostex or even a Denon that doesn't suffer from the hinge issues and just solder top of the line drivers in.

But what about them tho?
Is the Fostex HP-A4BL any good?

>300mW (32 ohm)

Its absolutely garbage. It can't power anything more than mobile headphones. No wonder Fostex pays Zeos to shill it, like STAX.

Fostex makes decent basshead cans but their amps are trash.

wait, you truly don't care? you mentioned a room mate earlier.
If you genuinely don't care like you say
Buy a HD579
They're far more comfortable than your previous headphones and sound better to boot.
559 if you can't find the 579 for cheap enough.

I use Dekoni sheepskin pads. More comfortable than stock but not hugely so. Luckily, I have small ears so there's that. Those actually are measured to actually reduce the treble emphasis, making the signature fairly linear going from the midrange.
Don't do the foam ring mod. Those head-fi people aren't victims of placebo and it does change the sound but never in a balanced way.
I may be able to find the measurements I'm talking about if you give me some time.

Great wire does sound different. George Cardas is known throughout the high end audio industry for making and designing a superb line of interconnects and cables. If (you) cannot hear the difference -- OK. Fair enough. I didn't know what great art was until I became educated in knowing what to look for. But the more that (you) listen to excellent audio gear the more you will advance to a level of greater understanding; greater enlightenment. Bottom line -- Trust your ears and listen to the music. PS -- cable design is based on physics and George Cardas (Cardas Audio), Ray Kimber (Kimber Kable), Caelin Gabriel (Shunyata Research), and Joe Kubala (Kubala Sosna) are all gifted artists and geniuses.

I'm currently thinking about getting an HD6XX or paying a little more for a gently used HE560. Any suggestions?

I've been trying to find that information but the author doesn't specify and the head-fi thread is huge.
Mine's mahogany and I never hear sibilance with those pads unless I start playing with the foam rings which, again, is pointless.

And note that the author didn't achieve a good seal with the stock pads so bass with the stock pads is in reality much more similar to Dekoni.

I don't mind floor user being here and don't want him permanently removed. But I do find it fun when he gets banned and temporarily removed, it shows who he has been posting as. He never associates his text posting with his pic spamming so people don't realize how much of a troll he really is.

Something with good isolation. Dont want to hear that road noise.

lol you are retarded
I don't know about your country, but in mine, this is illegal. Cops will arrest you and write down a ticket if you do that here. You're not supposed to isolate yourself from the road like wearing headphones or IEMs. When ambulances and cops are putting their sirens on you are to immediately make room for them to pass you.

HD 558

Planning to buy headphones for work, so preferably almost no sound leakage and as comfy as the HD 558s.
Currently thinking about DT 770s, but unsure whether the volume would be enough on a integrated sound card and whether the sound doesn't leak too much.

There's no situation in which you look good with this.
As a joke no one is going to laugh at this. As a troll this is "merely pretending" level. As a serious question it's retarded big time. Either way it's full retarded and the dumbass isn't where you think he is.
And we see that level of genuine stupidity all the time on here so asking people to distinguish between it and merely-pretending-teehee isn't helpful.

Looking for a new DAC/AMP for my DT1990s. Currently thinking a Schiit Magni 3 and Modi 3. Do these affect the sound signature much? I rather like the current signature of the DT1990 with balanced pads.

Current DAC/AMP is a Monoprice Desktop Amplifier, so it is probably worth an upgrade.

Budget is $300, though I might be able to go as high as $500.

Location is the United States.
