Discord alternatives

I'm looking for a chatting app with the features of Discord (specifically avatars, automatic logging, and "servers" with multiple channels) but allows users to host and administrate their own servers, instead of Discord's system where the company owns every server.

Does anything like that exist?

It's called IRC, but it doesn't have gay shit like avatars and useless logging for newfags

Just use IRC like normal degenerates.
Fucking Zoomers.

IRC's lack of convenient, automatic logging really sucks

keybase looks promising, and fairly normie friendly

It's a chat, not a forum.
If you really want to keep all logs then just keep your PC turned on.

who is paying you to make this thread every day?

Or what if I got an app that did the logging for me so I didn't have to waste power and create heat and noise in my room keeping my computer on

looks pretty good
might give it a whirl

Isn't that not an app in and of itself but some kind of keyring for various social media apps

>muh heat and noise
>muh 50 watts
Literally grow up

Wow that literally sounds like everything XMPP does. Is there something missing?

>What is XMPP?
Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is a communication protocol for message-oriented middleware.
Unlike most instant messaging protocols, XMPP is defined in an open standard and uses an open systems approach of development and application, by which anyone may implement an XMPP service and interoperate with other organizations' implementations. Because XMPP is an open protocol, implementations can be developed using any software license and many server, client, and library implementations are distributed as free and open-source software.

>What client should I use?
Get Conversations if you are on Android, Gajim or Pidgin on desktop PC.

>If you really want to keep all logs then just keep your PC turned on.
Or, you can save the logs and make regular backups

He wants to see the messages he missed while he was disconnect like a shitty forum or something.

Is riotim and matrix any good?

From what I can tell mattermost is somewhat this. (Tries to replace slack though, not discord). I was asked to set it up with LDAP for a company a while ago, but couldn't get it to work. Of course it had to be free as in free beer, so I was asked to hack around with some guys gitlab-emulation hack. I think they even offer a paid LDAP-module...

Like every chat program made after ten years ago

Do you understand the concept of servers and centralization?

What dose that have to do with chat logs

>while he was disconnect
user, I...
Zoomer fag, GTFO!

I'm older than you bitch

But your mindset is smaller, faglord.

> faglord
I have found the one who's younger. Faglord.

BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPF

excuse me

That 20 year old zoomer who calls other people zoomer to throw them off his scent

read the fucking privacy policy lmao

i use wire, it gets the job done, albeit a tad rough around the edges.

mastodon

There's more to social service than just functionality. It has to have population to communicate to.

Irc lacks even voip.
Are you retarded?
The best thing about discort is conviniently playing coop games with a bunch of friends.
Discord pretty is like the old pre-microsoft skype but even better.

I know Mumble and Teamspeak also exist but the sound and noise filtering are of greatly lower quality.

Your cpu has a built in level 0 computer that spies on you 24/7 and sends telemetry over network

What privacy are you talking about?

This is such FUD
>inb4 glownigger
I'm aware of the intel ME but to say it sends data 24/7 and not be noticed is very, very improbable

>Noticed
Remember the supermicro scandal?
It wasnt noticed for years.

How would you know given any router/network equipment is silicon poisoned as well?
In fact they must have been poisoned first.

I would imagine there's a level 0 network that your router simply doesn't tell you about.

But hey the government isnt going to terrorise the entire population like that.
They know who smokes weed and who jerks off to cp, but to act ont that knowledge would cause panic so you are safe as long as you are a low priority target not worth going for.

>Gajim or Pidgin
>not the glorious PSI+

>not using the patrician choice
matrix.org/blog/2018/04/26/matrix-and-riot-confirmed-as-the-basis-for-frances-secure-instant-messenger-app/

Riot.im
It also supports end to end encryption, open source protocols, has same functionality and similar layout

The supermicro thing I don't buy for the same reasons, it just doesn't seem feasible and it amazes that for what that tiny ass thing can supposedly and how many exist do no one has done an independent analysis to get maybe a die shot or something
>How would you know given any router/network equipment is silicon poisoned as well?
>In fact they must have been poisoned first.
You would think there are plenty of engineers that would have noticed illicit signals going trough there Ethernet cables, unless the government is breaking the laws of fucking psychics I just don't see it happening

Can you do voip through XMPP?

>Discord
writen on JavaScript? disasemble it

teamspeak3 still works

If he was using it in the first place, do you think he has the brain capacity to reverse it?

Just use Matrix/Riot.im for text/files and Mumble for voice.

>I know Mumble and Teamspeak also exist but the sound and noise filtering are of greatly lower quality.
lol
Mumble has both of these way better than Discord, especially with RNNoise on latest snapshot.

It depends on the client. While voice and even video is possible and in the standard, it's mostly not implemented because the developers don't really habe enough time/momey for that. There's a working fork of gajim though as far as I know.

Matrix, you can use riot.im for a nice normie frenly interface.

I use wire to communicate with the admins of my site.

>this thread isn't bait
wew

Riot.im.

IRC servers and clients supporting IRCv3 specification. Use your imagination.
>I want servers with "channels"
Let's think of #faggot as your server. You can make a bot on it print out every single channel of your server upon joining. Channels of your server can be named then #faggot-general, #faggot-porn etc
>image posting
Most IRC clients support scripts that allow you to upload images to some external image hosting, such as imgur. Using such script you can just automatically select file to upload and return the address of the actual image to send to your chat
>Avatars
That one's pretty retarded, but can be done. There's a current effort in IRCv3 project to support that one. Pic related

TL;DR: Discord is just IRC, where the bot maintaining stuff is "invisible".
Anything else? IRC is minimal, but extensible.

Attached: IRCv3.png (1088x514, 59K)

Same poster. Forgot to mention.
The simplest example of such image uploading is...
curl -F "[email protected]" anonfile.com/api/upload

You'll get a simple JSON file. Parse it, extract " "data/file/url/full" and post it onto the chat.
As simple as that. Now, just automate it with your favourite scripting language working with your favourite IRC client. It's like 5 lines of code at most. That's all, faggots.

I think one of the big things about discord is not just messages but voip

And that's the only feature missing from the list.
You don't need advanced features I listed before such as image posting on a voice chat, because it's not possible, right? Also, there are numerous external VoIP solutions that allow you to "side-link" with IRC, merging together administration system, that's the only thing common between these two kinds of channels.

what does Jow Forums think about tox? my friends are trying to find a discord alternative too tox.chat/index.html

Telegram

It's kinda good, but too failure prone.

what do you mean? like data leaks? or just bugs in the program?

Riot.im

Telegram crypto is shite:

news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6948742
Also nonfree nonfederated servers. Avoid.

What ever happen to TeamSpeak or XFire?

>2013
Nice try retard
>non free
You pay for progressive and user friendly messenger unlike r*ot or whatever.

>Nice try retard
You aren't very smart, are you?
>pay
It's not about paying (Telegram servers can be used without cost), it's about being proprietary open source that you can't self host.

Discord is just a centralized fork of rocketchat, you don't have to go to any of the stupid meme services ITT.
rocket.chat/

>IRC's lack of convenient, automatic logging really sucks

You're retarded. Hexchat and quassel both have options for automatic login.

mumble has better sound quality than discord, and its voice activity settings are also more sophisticated. it also eats about 1/20th of the RAM.

IRCv3 is a collection of specs that propose features for IRC clients and servers to maybe hopefully implement. Among them are a chathistory message:
ircv3.net/specs/extensions/batch/chathistory-3.3.html
Thus, servers with this capacity should be able to send clients that understand "chathistory" past messages. There just aren't too many servers or clients that support these features, and I don't think any of the "established" ones do.

But looking at the specs, it would be totally possible to make a fully "modern" IRC server and client that are backwards compatible, and works as a Discord clone or something. The only serious thing missing would be voice, given the bandwidth usage, but that can probably be accomplished through DCC… which may not be so great.

> owns every server
stop fucking calling them servers. they're not servers at all. the only servers are what discord has to run this bloated pile of shit. if you want your own server, a REAL server, get into running an IRCd off a VPS or your own/rented hardware. if you have to ask what an IRCd is then you should stick to using discord and pretending people have "servers" - oh my fucking sides. in orbit.
>lack automatic logging really sucks
you could just leave your machine on ... or... get an account with IRCcloud.. or.. run your IRC client from a VPS, you fucking retard.
discord marketing shills. they're trying to get as many people as possible to use it by shitposting about it everywhere. they get cash from "investors", discord marketing shills do their best to inflate account numbers to keep investors happy. twitter and facebook did the same thing.
>be discord
>look, investors! see how many people have created accounts? amazement!
and the cycle continues.

This is the first time I've ever made it

> ircv3
...is a complete joke
compulsive lying shill: detected and ignored.

>...is a complete joke
Why's that? Some dumb inside drama in the past? Or just because no one is actually bothering to implement their shit?

Riot

The better idea might be to actually use a different for VoIP, as IRC, based on TCP, will try to deliever every single packet, no matter how outdated is it. Thus, "side-linking" it to IRC(making it share the same users, permission system etc) may be a better option.
>not providing any arguments whatsoever
Retard detected and ignored

> being this illiterate
what a surprise. on Jow Forums of all boards. top fucking kek. learn to read, loser.

Matrix/Riot

I'll clarify...
>> ircv3
>...is a complete joke
Why do you think it's a complete joke?

>The better idea might be to actually use a different for VoIP
That was the idea.
As far as I can tell DCC is basically sending a request to connect directly. It would go something like "DCC CHAT voice ", and the client can figure out what to do if it understands the protocol.

Sounds good enough.

I'm liking some of its features, but some of its UI is kinda dumb and buggy.
How are communities supposed to work? Are they invite-only? I can't just post a link and go "Hey guys, join this community"?

IRC with bouncer.

Jow Forums/4channel

I just wish mumble would get a new stable release, it has quite a number of new features in 1.3.x, but hasn't been updated in 2 years.

>avatars
mental illness

They're just being dumb with their autistic release requirements. 1.3 should've been called 2.0 and released at least a year ago. The current "development snapshot" is pretty much stable anyway. Even Debian has pulled the snapshot into their testing/unstable repo and unless they release a new Mumble version soon, it's going to be in Debian 10 stable.
