At least the old versions of Windows were designed to be, you know, operating systems. They supported a wide variety of hardware and software without too much interference and had to actually be released in a usable state. That and pre-DSL internet, the updates had to actually count for something.
Vista was sluggish and completely broken. Plus it added UAC.
Windows 8.1 was apparently developed based on some bright idea from a marketing intern who had never seen a desktop PC and just assumed everyone uses touch-screen devices and apps.
Windows 10 is functional and an improvement over 8.1 but it comes with candy crush and cortana pre-installed. I could rant for several paragraphs about how it's fucked but that first statement alone is enough.

Windows 2000 was the last Microsoft operating system actually designed for professional use. After that, home users clearly became a priority, and it shows.
The latest versions... I honestly don't even who the fuck their target is. They aren't a sane working environment, and certainly not practical on a desktop.

Windows Phone is overrated.
- lagged on the low-end hardware
- half the phones that were promised Windows 10 never got the update
- buggy on phones that did get the update
- can't change default apps without third party tools
- developers abandoned their apps long before Windows Phone was even discontinued
The later versions are designed for wide-spread appeal and usage. That's why they're so unfocused and scatter-brained.
Even looking at Windows 10, there's so much duplication of effort. There are two menus for uninstalling programs for fuck's sake. There's a tard version of certain programs and then the standard "old-school" version.
But their modern design philosophy is clear - consumers are braindead and need the software to think for them and keep itself alive. That's why they've removed so much control and customization and filled the OS' ass up with a hot load of bloatware.
There is two versions of the settings menu, each with their own unique features and settings.
Win2k was the golden age of Windows. Win7 was alright but the glass stuff was unnecessary.
Win10 is wtf tier. There is no cohesion at all. Even most Linux distros have surpassed it in terms of where settings are located. Is the thing I want in "Settings" or control panel? Why isn't there a control panel icon anywhere? There is still so much shit in control panel/Security and Maintenance. Not to mention Computer Management.
MS needs to step back from Win10 and make the decision to start over. The "Settings" menu is complete bullshit. Just put everything back into the control panel.

Settings is the replacement you idiot. Every 6 months they take more and more out of the control panel and put it in the new Settings menu.
MMC has been removed from Server Core with a long term plan to completely replace it - already you can do many things using Windows Admin Centre if you so desire.
That's basically the LTSB edition. You could just get the hell over the minor inconveniences that you disable once and move on with your life.

How the FUCK does this work? Especially since those versions of Windows are essentially DOS programs.
To me XP was the last time when you could use the idle desktop as a symbol of countless other great cultural things.
XP was the time when the web finally got out of dial up, but wasn't bloated trash, meaning you could watch The Demented Cartoon Movie in only a minute's loading rather than 20. It serves as a symbol for when many of the best parts of the old web and old tech world were still alive and kicking, but had many new features meaning you could actually enjoy them.
Because Settings was intended to be the same on the new ARM64 PCs and it already was the same as Windows 10 Mobile.
They're now moving most of everything else in there.

Meh. At the time of the Windows 8 release (2012?), I was working on some multi-OS compatibility shit at Microsoft and had to work on XP through 8. 7 was the only one without glaring issues.
By SP2 all the problems had been patched out. Microsoft knew the damage had been done so they gave vista a new UI and other tweaks and called it windows 7.
Perhaps. I honestly can't remember the problems I had anymore, but they were annoying. I was never a huge Windows fan anyway though.

The LTS branches of windows 10 are usable but they are still unstable trash compared to anything other than vista.
Unironically Windows 7 Enterprise is still more locked down and bloated. It's also based on old Vista source, instead of the half-rewritten Windows 10 one that was done after (more likely turning) Windows 8.
