But by it's very nature a pentesting distro will have security flwas/holes - an eg. off the top of muh head is that in order to run a prot scan you really need all ports open, including ssh etc. which on most "secure" distros would rightly be disabled or closed by default. That's just 1 simple example. Short ver: pentesting distros "generally" aren't focused on being secure as they need these holes in order to do what they do.

so I've used debian repos with the kali repos pinned lower so I don't get silly things like the kali images (for eg.)

I use a lot of the kali tools via rcon and having uptodate tools is important.

If I'm going to do pentesting (not really a big part of muh work) I use a live distro.

Dude, you should really read up on port scanning, because this couldn't be more far from the truth. Scanning ports does not mean you should open any ports on your own system.

Pentesting systems can be just as secure, or even more secure than general purpose distributions. Just because you're looking for security holes does not mean you should use a system riddles with holes itself. It's just Kali Linux that's doing a piss poor job at keeping its user safe.

Kali is just debian with a lot of tools.
Used it for 2 years as main distro, It works and youtube pajeets make some great tutos to do some shit from time to time.
I have used pure debian too (xfce too), no difference, it works the same.
Now I'm on arch based distro.
I want to try parrot in a vm since it became a thing.
